Sport Card Collectors 2012 NFL Preview: AFC North

There is just something about the NFL that makes it my favorite sport. Don't get me wrong, I do watch baseball time to time. And a little basketball. I am not much of a hockey, racing, golf or bowling (other than playing it) person. The NFL is the only sport I can sit and watch an entire game of anymore.  I don't know if its because I played it or grew up watching it...but I love the game. And because of this with the NFL season upcoming and the start of the preseason is soon...I thought I would share my opinions of how I think the divisions will break down and who will win each.

I will be breaking down 2 divisions a week up until the start of the season. Today's is the AFC North and here is how I think it will go down: (note: these are in order of how we think they will finish and what their records will be)

1. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (11-5)

Item image Pittsburgh comes in with the same team but the biggest move they had was bringing in a new offensive coordinator in Todd Haley. It has also been kind of controversial knowing that him and star QB Ben Roethlisberger have not been hand in hand. Other than that, Pittsburgh has some young weapons on offense. Running back Rashard Mendenhall makes a return after an injury and looks to prove himself. WR's Mike Wallace (if he ever signs), Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders gives Big Ben plenty of weapons along with TE Heath Miller. The biggest question still is Pittsburghs offensive line. How will they protect Ben? Luckily for them, Ben is a moving QB who can avoid sacks. But will still get hit a lot.

On defense, they are still very tough. SS Troy Polamalu is still the best safety in the game (he also has the best hair) and they have the best linebacker core in the league with Timmons, Woodley and Harrison. The defense may be aging, but they are still a top 10 group.

Overall, Pitt should win the division with the amount of talent on the team. They could be one of the better teams in the AFC. To me, that all falls on Big Ben and Todd Haley's shoulders. If they can get on the same page and that offense starts to roll along with a stout D, Big Ben could once again lead them to another Super Bowl.

2. BALTIMORE RAVENS (10-6)

Item imageWith RB Ray Rice signing, he gives them what they need on offense. TE Ed Dickson, Anquan Bolden, 2nd year guy Torrey Smith who made big plays last season, rookie Tommy Streeter, new acquistion WR Jacoby Jones are some of the weapons for QB Joe Flacco to throw to. However many ask, is Joe Flacco a Super Bowl caliber QB? I think he is. He has won multiple playoff games. Has led the team to the AFC Championship. And last season proved it. They should have been the team in the Super Bowl. They were one dropped ball away. That wasn't Flacco's fault. The offense overall should be able to move the ball.

On defense, well, Baltimore is hard hitting and talented. They always rank towards the top and have a ball hawk playmaker in Ed Reed. MLB Ray Lewis is still a tackling machine after all of these years and wants another ring badly. And knows this defense has enough talent to get him there. The biggest loss was losing OLB T. Suggs for possibly the season. He gave them a ton of versatility and could play all over the field as a pass rusher. There will be a lot of pressure on rookie OLB Courtney Upshaw to take his spot.

Overall, I think this team is the second best team in the division. Just like Pitt, They have an aging defense but they should still be good. Once again, their playoff run will fall on Flacco and the offense's shoulders to see if they can score in tight game situations.

 3. CINCINNATI BENGALS (9-7)

Item image Cincinnati surprised a lot of people last season. They made noise in their division and even made the playoffs before losing to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round. QB Andy Dalton and A.J. Green jelled very well as rookies and they now picked up former Patriots RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis to help run the ball. The offense should still be able to move the ball with young talented WR's and TE Jermaine Gresham and a tough running game.

On defense, the Bengals were a surprise. They for the most part could play with any team. The lost OLB Keith Rivers in a trade with the Giants but that should not hurt them too much. In the draft the got CB Dre Kirkpatrick and picked up CB Terrence Newman from Free Agency to help with their weak secondary.  They may be young on defense, but they are hungry and can make a roar.

Overall, I think the Bengals will still play well and might sneak back into the playoffs, but other teams in the AFC drastically improved and their defense still may not be up to par in a division where its about good defense and running the ball.

4. CLEVELAND BROWNS (6-10)

Item image Cleveland may have had the most exciting draft out of every team in the league. They traded up to the third spot to secure excellent RB Trent Richardson. They then later in the draft got QB Bradon Wheedon. They add them to a young core of wide outs including Mohamed Massaquoi and Greg Little. The QB battle just ended and the Browns went with Wheedon. Now there is an interesting battle for number 2 between McCoy and Seneca Wallace.

On defense, not many names here.  CB Joe Haden is a Pro Bowl caliber corner and D'Qwell Jackson is a good LB but outside of that, not much here to see. The defense did however improve last season and played well at times. If they can continued to get the young guys to play well together, in a few years this could be a top 10 defense and they could play like the other defenses in the division.

Overall, the Browns played well last season and they should play a little bit better this one. They still have a ways to go with such a young team. The talent though is growing and in a few years this proud franchise could be in the playoffs again.

What do you guys think of my predictions? Did I rank a team too high? Too low? Give me your thoughts!

Topps Football 2012: Golden Ticket

Topps released some amazing news yesterday and who wouldn't be excited about this! Topps packed these Golden Draft Tickets in Hobby and Retail boxes of 2012 Topps Football that releases today. Those who find these tickets will get an autographed Andrew Luck or RG3 football from the rookie premier. However...the biggest news of all is that one lucky fan will be drafted by Topps Football and have their own rookie card made up and will be featured in the 2013 Topps Football product.

Now, my dream has always been to be on a football card. I know many of you probably feel the same. I wouldn't know how to react if I was chosen for this..I don't even know what my first words would be..I am curious though...what would your first words be (keep it clean) if you got your own rookie card?

Review: Score Football 2012

This is the best bang for your literal buck product out on the market. You have chances to pull rookie autos, printing plates and rookie variations and it all costs a dollar a pack. Not to mention its loaded with rookies, inserts, and a lot of team players. This is a fun product to bust.

First off, I would like to say thanks to the WONDERFUL people at Panini America for providing us with this box to review. Here are many places you can find Panini America: official site, blog, Twitter, and Facebook.

And as always...we will do some giveaways from this product!

Here is my review:

Boxes: Nice Design. RG3. Can't go wrong with a top rookie on  the package.

Packs: I like the pack design. The colors stand out and Panini wanted to catch your attention with one rookie and one glossy per pack. For $1, they wanted to let you know right off you were guaranteed something in return.

Base: Nice Design. I like the photography that Panini used for this product. The action shots. The border is a little big, but with the action shots it doesn't look bad. Its more like framing the picture.

Another positive thing about Score, players who switched teams in the off season are feature in their new uni's!

My best rookie pull. Andrew Luck. The rookie card design I totally dig as well.

This is a rookie card and a SP parallel as well of Joe Adams

Inserts: Plenty in a box. And plenty to choose from. You get one glossy per pack (thats what the Reuben Randle is). Parallels of Scorecard, Gold Zone and the Red Zone that is numbered (we didn't pull a Red Zone) there is a lot of  inserts that should provide you immediate value and its easy to tell the parallels from the base. We dig the new design for the Hot Rookies. Stands out very well! Sort of reminds you of a wanted poster in a cowboy movie. And Panini's celebration of Score over the years is a great idea and taking designs from the past and putting new photos on the persons old rookie cards such as the Brees 2001 Score design above.

Autographs: Though not a great player, it was nice to see an autograph hit from Score. Our first ever auto hit from the product.

Overall: Nice design. You get 36 rookies (we got 39), 36 glossy and tons of other inserts and 36 packs and 7 cards per pack per box. There is a chance at an auto or a printing plate. This product is a winner. There is no way to lose money when you buy this product. Its fun, its worth every buck and it has a lot to offer. Give Score Football a try.

Ratings:  Bloggers Note: Our ratings are based specifically on the blaster, box or packs we opened and do not express what the overall product could bring. Ratings based on a 1-5. 1 Being the lowest and 5 being the highest.

Review: Donruss Elite Football 2012

Elite is a what is said in the title..its ELITE. The addition of acetate to this product makes it one of the hottest products out on the market right now. Rookies in their NFL uni's, players that switched teams in their new uni's and some nice looking base cards makes me want more!

RG3 and Andrew Luck. The layout is nice and it draws your attention to the amount of cards and how many per pack. I took a side shot of the box because I thought this is where you would find it on a shelf.

Packs: Brand name, cards per pack stare at you. Key rookies and the pack is shiny. All great things combined.

Base: The Silver cardboard always makes the base cards look stunning! Updated players in their new uni's are nice as well.

Rookies: I put this one separate because the rookie still have the silver cardboard, but they also have a rainbow shine to them that is very impressive!

InsertsParallels can be found in this product but we didn't get any. However, there is a nice variety and great looking inserts. A ton of creativity was used when Panini brought back Acetate (plastic cards) such is the case for their Hard Hats insert. The Prime Numbers insert is very cool. We tried our best to angle the card to where you can see that the number 1204 is see through. Its like Panini shot tiny bullets at it. Very sick. The other inserts are nice as well such as Rookie Elite Series and the Hit List insert has a simple but elegant design. The Craftsmen insert seemed to much of a base card look to me except they are all numbered, we got a regular version (numbered to 999) and a black parallel of, of Darren McFadden numbered to just 49.

Autographs: They took the nice rainbow looking inserts and added autographs. We were lucky to pull Morris Claiborne Aspirations die cut numbered to 49.  There is autograph versions of the acetate Hard Hats inserts as well and they seem to fall around one per box. We got Dre Kirkpatrick from the Bengals as a redemption card. What I like, other than the Acetate auto despite it being a redemption, is the rookie auto focus of this product. And they look really nice.

Jerseys: Nice design. A decent swatch. Unlike most jersey cards where the jersey is just put in there, this one kinda has a deep pocket it sits in. Its unique for a jersey card.

Overall: For a product around $130 a box. You get a nice mix of cards. The base cards are worth putting a set together, the rookies are worth collecting with the rainbow goodness, the inserts look nice, autographs are rookie loaded (you can also land some amazing veteran and legends autographs) and the jersey cards look great. There is no going wrong with Elite football.

Game Day Recipe: Sport Card Collectors Easy Salmon

This is a simple, but delicious recipe for Salmon.

What's Needed:

1lb of Salmon fresh or frozen
4 tablespoons of butter or margerine
salt and pepper and paprika.

Turn the oven to 375 degrees.  Place the salmon in a shallow dish. Cut the butter up into pieces and lay them on top of the salmon. Give a shake of each salt, pepper and salmon. Bake for 20 mins and you are done! I sometimes add in some lemon juice on top of the butter or a dash of maple syrup for a change up. There are many things you can do with this basic recipe. So have fun and give them a try!

Panini adding an extra bit of Kobe to their 2012-2013 Products

Panini announced yesterday that they were adding extra Kobe Bryant to their NBA lineup. In every hobby box of their NBA cards, starting with Hoops that releases soon, you will find a 5 card pack of Kobe Anthology cards showcasing moments from his great career.

The set includes 200 cards and you can also find rare autograph and jersey cards versions. The most exciting thing is that Panini is also adding going to do special promotions, including an opportunity for five lucky fans to meet Bryant face to face.

This to me is a very exciting thing. So in this years NBA products they could be hot. Two years worth of rookie cards, a full lineup of product and now a little extra Kobe.

Here is a small lineup of what the cards will look like:

Panini America Kobe Anthology 15

Panini America Kobe Anthology 16

Panini America Kobe Anthology 48

Panini America Kobe Anthology 108

Panini America Kobe Anthology 200

What are your thoughts on this? And how excited are you about the 2012-2013 NBA card lineup?
