Ken Griffey Jr Cards Of The Week!

As we posted a few weeks ago we wanted to start a new segment of sharing our Griffey Jr. Collection with you guys. This was an ongoing PC for awhile. We haven't collected in a few years but we had a big enough collection to have been featured in Februarys 2011 Beckett Baseball. We will share these for about 40 weeks and it will be featured like this one. There will be no autographs or jersey cards featured on these posts as most are from the 90's era.

Donruss products were one of my favorites to pick up back when they made MLB cards as you can see with most of this sheet made of Donruss and Score. Flair was my favorite card on this sheet. Just always loved the design.
Look forward to next weeks post on Friday for another round of Ken Griffey Jr. Cards  Of The Week!

Feel free to leave comments on our posts and your thoughts on our collection.

Random Card Of The Day: LaPHONSO Ellis Topps Stadium Club 92-93

Review: Topps Magic Football 2012 Hobby Box

I know we already reviewed the blaster version. but upon getting the hobby version as an early birthday present I said to myself...why not review it that way as well. So here it is...

2012 Topps Magic Football Hobby Box

Box Break Down:
  • 24 Packs Per Box, 8 Cards Per Pack
  • (3) Autograph Cards Per Box!
  • (1) Black Bordered Mini Parallel Per Box!
  • $80 a box (got mine on sale for under $70 from dacardworld)

BASE CARDS: Topps sometimes colorful cartoonish looking base card designs don't usually work. They used it in both high end and low end products. I prefer real photography and action shots. But in this case for this kind of product its attractive. The base design in general is. With the lack of gloss as well these cards would only look good done this way.

INSERTS: Other than anything in chrome style setting, minis are also a favorite of mine. They fall almost one per pack. There are also mini black bordered versions fall one per box. The other mini mini's (48 Magic) as we will call them are unique as well and seem to fall 2 per box.  We also pulled a Pigskin Mini numbered Parallel of Bobby Rainey.  The other inserts were really lacking in design. They were extremely lame and very unexciting to pull. They remind of something you would use as a subset and not an insert. However, Rookie Enchantments that are pretty impressive cards. The photo has a purple frame around it. The picture is embedded. Very attractive card and this picture does not do it justice.
AUTOGRAPHS: Sorry for the pics I don't know why the rest came out so great but the autos didn't, but its probably best they look like this anyways. Two Cleveland Browns (Colt McCoy and Travis Benjamin) and one Raider (Criner) makes this a dark (pun very much intended)...ugly break. The cards still look nice and the fact all are sticker autos didn't bother me. But come on, wheres the value????

JERSEY/PATCH CARDS:Didn't pull any but heard they are very nice looking. And some include coins.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: First off, value wasn't here. 3 bad autos. No rookie cards of RG3, Luck or Russell Wilson or anyone else for that matter other than the one Doug Martin. Value for what you pay to what you get...not good at all. Cards still look nice and we all know its a gamble to buy a box...but come least put good rookie cards in if the autos are bad??!!Tried to talk to Topps about it, but no response. Not impressed.

RATINGS:  Bloggers Note: Our ratings are based specifically on the blaster, box or packs we opened and do not express what the overall product could bring. Ratings based on a 1-5. 1 Being the lowest and 5 being the highest.
                Packaging: 5
                Base Design: 4
                Insert Design: 2.5
Memorablila/Autographs: 2 (this was based on players, design would be 4)
Blaster, Hobby Box, or Pack Value: 2.5

Rack Pack Break Of Topps Chrome Baseball 2012

We decided to bring back Box Breakers but decided to do it a little differently. Once in awhile we will do a break and show off its contents. We think its good to see a box or packs contents once, maybe twice to decide if you want to buy it or not. In this case, we have already reviewed this product and broke it a couple of times. But by showing you what you can get more than once might help you decide if its worth buying or not. This is what the hobby is all about. We are sorry for the sideways pictures in advance. We had Photobucket issues.

Refractor and Xfactor

Each Rack Pack comes with a three card pack of Orange refractors
Let us know your thoughts on this break and your thoughts on Topps Chrome baseball 2012 Rack Packs

NFL Player Of The Day Grand Prize Winner Announced!!

2012 NFLPOD Logo

For those of you that remember in the fall we ran the Panini Player Of The Day blogger promotion on this blog where we awarded a ton of prizes to our fans, its time to announce the National Sweepstakes Winner.

Since this promotions main focus was hobby shops and helping them create business and sell more Panini cards while awarding the consumer with prizes too. There was a National Prize to chase as well with this promotion and that was to spend a day with an NFL star. This contest was for those who visited their hobby shops and got a Player Of The Day from their pack of Panini cards. Each hobby shop designated who their Player Of The Day was from the poster of players. There were more than 100,000 people who participated in this promotion across 500 hobby shops.  Each participating store selected a grand prize winner for a spot in the national sweepstakes. More than 60 collectors earned prizes in the national sweepstakes including autographed football and autographed NFL trading cards.

And now drum roll....The winner that gets to spend a day with an NFL Player is..... Frank Rosato of New Providence, NJ who gets to Spend the Day with NFL Star Hakeem Nicks on Saturday, April, 27, 2013.  Being a Giants fan, you all know how jealous I am of this. Along with spending the day with an NFL player, the card collector’s special day includes a private party in his home, $250 shopping spree for Panini NFL cards and a free autograph session for the community at Attack of the Baseball Cards in Union, NJ which is the shop the winner visited for the promotion.

At least 200 fans will collect a free autograph from the event. Collectors can "reserve" a spot at the front of the line in advance by visiting Attack of the Baseball Cards before the event. After that, its first come, first serve.

We would like to thank Panini and Panini POD for allowing this blog to participate in the blogger promotion of Player of the Day and we look forward to the 2013 edition. And we want to also thank our fans who participated and went the extra mile. We truly appreciated it and hope you return next year and hope to grab some new fans as well!

FANdom Card Of The Day: Nice Variety of Cards

Thanks to Arron Stout for providing us with these awesome cards to share!

I see every hobby blogger and everyone on Twitter and Facebook have commented on the forever marriage of Topps and an exclusive MLB license so I thought I would take my turn on it.

First off, I hold nothing against Topps. They have been in the baseball card business forever and it would seem weird if they didn't have a license, I just don't like the exclusive licensing.

I think exclusive licensing in the hobby really hurts it. And you can't tell me that some of us wouldn't have loved to see Upper Deck (who did manage to grab a MLBPA license in breaking news yesterday) bring back some of their classic baseball products.:

We all know Upper Decks track record of great MLB products and how great would Fleer Retro baseball (planned for a MLBPA release) look in MLB uniforms??? Upper Deck always did great things with baseball cards.
Or what about Panini? A company who has taken their MLBPA license and have taken products to the next level. How about giving them a shot at a MLB license? I think they have done more than enough to prove they deserve a shot at it. Just look at their sold out National Treasures and Prizm products.

Panini America 2012 National Treasures Baseball Modern Marvels (11)

If Panini was to get a MLB license we would see great Donruss products again. Who wouldn't enjoy Rated Rookies and Donruss Elite and Rookies and Stars in MLB cards again?

I am not saying Topps shouldn't make MLB baseball cards, I just think we need someone else making them as well. Hopefully in 2021 MLB will make a big decision and let someone else join in on the MLB fun.

What are your thoughts on this and which company do you think should get a shot at a license with Topps?
