Review: Panini Hometown Heroes Baseball 2013

First off, I would like to say thanks to the WONDERFUL people at Panini America for providing us with this box to review. Here are many places you can find Panini America: official site, blog, Twitter, and Facebook. If you don't follow them at all..you should! They talk to you on Twitter, have contests on their blog and Facebook and the site is also fun to visit!

Box Break Down:
  • 12 Packs Per Box, 24 Cards Per Pack
  • Three Autographs per box!
  • Three SportDisc inserts per box!
  • $105 per box

BASE CARDS: Hometown Heroes is a NEW baseball card MLBPA product from Panini. The base cards are made up of stars of today, yesterday and tomorrow. There are 260 cards in the base set along with 40 Base Image Variation SPs. The design is classic throwback. Something that reminds us of Panini's basketball Past and Present with a touch of Topps Heritage. The old school design looks great. The only tweak we would make is the rookie card symbol. It shouldn't be hidden. We didn't know rookies existed til we saw Bundy than the small RC symbol hidden inside the baseball. The rookie logo would be much better placed to the top of the card.

Once again, this product would be better with MLB logos but Panini is doing a good job working with what they got.

These are really cool. Sportdiscs are lenticular action coins and change pictures when moved back and forth.

INSERTS: There are a ton of inserts in this product and in every box you should find Three Sportdiscs, Five State Parallels, One Zip Codes Parallel, Three Curtain Call, Two City Hall, Two Defining Moments, One Nickname, One Rivalry, and One Homegrown Heroes!

The inserts match the product. They are all in a throwback design. The state and zip code parallels are cool, however you gotta pay attention when opening the 24 card pack or you might miss em!

The one insert to me that doesn't seem to fit is the Nicknames one. That design seems more suited for Triple Play and not this product. But other than that there are some fun insert finds here with of course the Sportsdiscs being the most fun.

AUTOGRAPHS: The Hometown Signature is an on card autograph set of players known for their hard-nosed play and interaction with fans on and off the field, the players in this autograph set you would call Fan Favorites with guys like Lenny Dykstra, Tom Brunansky, Tony Pena, Andres Galarraga, Willie Wilson, Oscar Gamble, Rob Dibble among others. This is the autograph heaven for those players you might not see everyday. You will find three in every box. There are different autograph sets in this product to collect as well such as Face of the Franchise Signatures, Hometown Signatures Set Checklist, Left Their Marks Signatures Set Checklist and Scripted Legacy Signatures Set Checklist

JERSEY/PATCH CARDS:N/A. I don't think this product really needs them. The autos are where it's at.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: This product has a place with certain collectors. If you are looking for a thrill ride and the big pull, this isn't for you. This is for the autograph collector . The one who goes around to different shows and different stadiums trying to find that one player he or she watched growing up and ask them for their autograph. And they may not always find them. But here is where they are hiding. And is or the the collector who likes just bust for fun and to have fun doing so.

Each box is LOADED with cards like the 24 card packs are with a variety of base, inserts and a possible autograph. It's a fun rip if you love a throwback product too.

Minnesota Vikings @ NY Giants

Here is our SIXTH entry into the NY Giants/Panini America Promo Contest!

All you have to do to enter is comment with the Total Points for this game without going over. Remember that cards only get added to the pot if the Giants win this game. However, you can still "win" for the week either way. The person with the most "wins" at the end of the year wins the pot.

The Week 5 of our contest victory goes to ZAC SMITH AND JAMIE B since we don't have a tie breaker score and both guessed 48 points.

Alright, this week, we are sticking with 3 cards to the pot IF the Giants can finally win. Another rough game yesterday that I don't even have words for. I thought yesterday was a win! Remember this weeks entries will be due by Thursday! So enter early!

Hopefully on the big stage the Giants can finally nail a win. I never in a MILLION YEARS would have said they would be 0-6 at this point.

Here are the updated standings:

Zac Smith                               2 WIN

GRADY MALACHOWSKI  1 WIN
Scott N.                                 1 WIN
Dennis                                    1 WIN
JJ HERNANDEZ                   1 WIN
JAMIE B                                1 WIN

Review: Panini Certified Football 2013

First off, I would like to say thanks to the WONDERFUL people at Panini America for providing us with this box to review. Here are many places you can find Panini America: official site, blog, Twitter, and Facebook. If you don't follow them at all..you should! They talk to you on Twitter, have contests on their blog and Facebook and the site is also fun to visit!

Box Break Down:
  • 10 Packs Per Box, 5 Cards Per Pack
  • 4 hits per box
  • $90-$95 per box
  • Look for Mirror parallels

BASE CARDS:The roots of Certified base cards stay the same. Clean design with standout player on silver foilboard. Certified has also been known to have #'d subsets as well. This years includes the Immortals and New Generation subsets both # to 999 with the words written across the top of the card. I like that Panini does this to the base cards. Adds more value to just a plain base card if they are limited. Not to mention, it adds more fun to chasing down a base card set. I know there are not many of us set chasers left, but being one myself, this is what I look for.

We did run into a problem with some of the base cards we thought we would warn you about. Due to the silverboard technology used and the thinness of the cards, be very careful upon opening packs as it does not take much to damage a few corners as we found out a couple of packs in. But as long as you open slowly, you will be fine.

INSERTS: Mirror parallels are this products bread and butter inserts. You will find three of these in every box. There are Mirror parallels of Red, Blue, Gold, Emerald and Black that are numbered from 250 all the way down to 1. Our box didn't bring the boom in terms of Mirror parallels, but gotta say that they are very eye appealing.

AUTOGRAPHS: In terms of BOOM this box didn't provide it with the autographs. We were a bit disappointed not have pulled a FRESHMAN FABRIC as one of our autographs. Two base autos were not quite what we expected from this box. Though design is nice with the mirror red appeal on the New Generation subset card.

The Freshman Fabric design this year is spectacular if you haven't seen it. Here is an example (remember this isn't a card we pulled from this break and just an example taken from Panini's blog)

Panini America 2013 Certified Football QC (76)
Much improved over past years designs. Just because we didn't land one in our box shouldn't scare you from trying the product. Because these alone will catch your attention.

JERSEY/PATCH CARD:  Most breaks will give you 2 autos, 2 memorabilia. We landed a bonus patch card in the box in our last pack of Eric Decker. It's a gold mirror parallel version and its DIRTY! No, it's not like that. It's literally dirty. The patch has dirt stains on it so you know that it's game used.

All of the jersey cards in this product are well designed. The Robinson and Ellington jersey cards above are "trapped" into the card. And if you take note the Robinson is a gold parallel version. But our favorite was this Decker. Nice to see some filth on these game used cards. And the mirror shine helps it stand out too.

New to this years lineup is Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders Insert Sets! Find silhouette die-cuts over a jumbo material swatch, including autographed versions! And if you are like me, silhouettes are ones you chase.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: In terms of design, the overall product is beautiful. It also has a lot to offer with the right box break. We have seen other breaks that were much more impressive than the one we had so don't let this break scare you away. We did get a bonus hit however and it was sick. But it was a little disappointing not to find a Freshman Fabric and only base autographs. Not every box will give you this.

Speaking of not every boxes, there’s the existence of three Hot Boxes per 24 box case (one in each eight-box inner case) that will replace every base card with special Platinum parallel versions. These alone will be another chase. Especially those of us trying to get rainbows of our favorite players.

In the end, if you are a fan of Certified, this years product will not disappoint especially with the new add ons.
