Hobby Topic

Another post in our new series Hobby Topics. This is not so much a post for us to comment about or give our opinions on, this is your chance to let your voice be heard on a variety of topics in the hobby. We are leaving the floor open to you! So comment away! But please no language and keep your answer clean as we do have a younger following as well.

Today's Topic will be about LICENSING in the hobby

How do you feel about the current licensing landscape? Is there company you prefer to have a license more than another? Would you want more than one company to have a license to product pro cards of baseball and basketball?

Let's hear your thoughts!

A Nice Autographed Piece Of Ralph Kiner

With the passing yesterday of baseball legend Ralph Kiner at age 91, I thought I would share a piece of memorabilia that I own of him. It is a piece I won about 5 years ago in a contest:

The piece is framed with an old picture, gold nameplate along with a cut signature of Kiner. On the back side, is the Certificate Of Authenticity by the Scoreboard Company and Chairman/CEO Ken Goldin.

A Hall Of Fame player, Kiner hit .279 with 369 Home Runs over 10 seasons with 3 teams.

I have no plans on selling or trading this piece as its a nice fit into my collection. However, thoughts are always welcomed on it and comments on Ralph's career both as a player and announcer are welcomed as well.

Retail Break 'Em: 2014 Topps Baseball Rack Pack

With the end of the football season, I start to get antsy for new cards for 2014 to hit the market. Especially baseball cards since that season is soon upon us. So I went to Walmart to help calm that craving with the new release Topps Series 1.

I couldn't afford a blaster on this trip, but wanted to get something. A Jumbo Pack (that I still call a Rack Pack) was reasonable break for $4.98 to calm that pack craving for now. You get 36 cards per pack and 2 special blue parallels as well.

Now onto the break:

Despite that border that still bothers me,much rather have a borderless card, I was quite impressed with some of the photography that Topps used on these. Probably the best I have seen from them.
Only 3 rookies

Only 3 inserts. I liked this. The last few years the amount of inserts they stick in their products is way too much. I did like the designs on these.

Two blue parallels as promised and a third green that wasn't listed anywhere. I found out some info on it and I guess Topps stuck one of these per a rack pack as well.

This card caught me odd at first, mostly because I didn't notice the Power Players part, when the silver didn't shine on the card. Upon further investigating I found out it was Topps Power Players card. Similar to past years programs, the back of the Power Players card provides you with a code you can use to unlock your player online to win prizes. To find out more on this, follow this LINK. For me, I like that fact even if you don't win a prize, you still got a card of the player. In the past couple of years you would just get a basic card with the writing on the front and code. This is much better to me.

Overall, not a bad break. I felt some things Topps improved on and some were the same. If they can improve upon cutting down on the border size on the cards that would be a much better design.

As always, comments are welcomed!

What's In The Mail Box?

After a huge final game of the season (among two previous impressive ones as well), it seemed everyone was on the Jerrel Jernigan bandwagon. I had already started to collect him long before his big starts. But, had to make sure to at least grab one more nice card before the spike in prices. This is the one I grabbed. For $1.24 I would say I got a pretty good steal.

Let me know your thoughts as always.

What's In The Mail Box?

I once again had to add to my Rueben Randle collection. This time I added a nice 20 card lot (one card not pictured) for only $.99!

Check out below what I added:

3 Topps rookies, 2 chrome rookies and a refractor

2 Topps Prime rookies, Blue Prime Rookie parallel, 2 Bowman rookies, 1 Topps Platinum x-factor parallel rookie and a Topps Platinum Rookie (not pictured)

1 Panini Presgite Draft Day Destination, Prestige Prestigous Picks, Prizm rookie, Upper Deck rookie and two Leaf Young Stars.

The final piece of the lot was a Fabric Of The Game jersey card of Randle. I am once again very happy with this purchase. 20 more cards to the Randle PC. Despite some being doubles, you just can't go wrong with that price.

As always, thoughts and comments are always welcomed!

Winner Of Our Super Bowl 48 Giveaway!

Well, that was not what I would call a Super Bowl by any means, but congrats goes out to the Seattle Seahawks for total domination and the win. By far was probably the most boring Super Bowl I have ever watched. The commercials were not much better. A positive note was this contest! There were about a little over 30 entries and most chose Denver to win. That automatically eliminated some.

Before I tell the winner and break it down on how they were chosen, here is again what they won!

1 Blue Binder, ! 100 Ct box of 9 Pocket sheets and a package of Card Sleeves made possible by our friends at BCW Supplies! Make sure to go and thank them for their generosity!!

Russell Wilson inserts, autograph of Denver DT Marcus Thomas, Player Of The Day card of Peyton Manning and a Topps Chrome X-Factor of Richard Sherman

4 gold parallel numbered to 2011 rookie inserts of Cameron Heyward, Rob Housler, Ryan Kerrigan and Corey Luigit.

Now onto the moment you have been waiting for. but first here were the rules:

1. You MUST BE A U.S. Resident to enter. Sorry, shipping reasons.
2. Pick the winner of Super Bowl 48
3. Pick the total score for Super Bowl 48 WITHOUT GOING OVER
4. As a Tie Breaker, pick Super Bowl MVP
5. Second Tie Breaker, pick how many yards Peyton Manning will throw for

A big congrats goes out to Thomas Young who picked Seattle to win. Then chose the score of 48 that tied someone else so I had to go to the next tie breaker the MVP. Knowing anyone in their right mind never would have gotten that right, it came down to Peyton's total yards that Thomas was closest on, only missing it by 5 yards.

So Thomas, congrats! Email your address to sportcardcollectors@hotmail.com and I will pass this information onto BCW Supplies who will ship out your prize as well. You will have 7 days from today to claim the prize or it will be re-given away.

Thanks to everyone who entered and look forward to more contests right here on Sport Card Collectors!

What's In The Mail Box?

With the Pack Gambler recently running a big sale on his SITE, I went searching for some fun items that might look good in the PC. That's when I stumbled upon Yankees newest catcher Brian McCann's autograph. I knew I must have it and grabbed it!

This will make a great addition to my collection and I look forward to a big season from him in pinstripes. The Yankees have been desperately needing a catcher since Posada retired and now they have one.

Let me know as always your thoughts on the mail day and I must also thank The Pack Gambler for getting this to me very fast!
