Hobby Topic

Another post in our new series Hobby Topics. This is not so much a post for us to comment about or give our opinions on, this is your chance to let your voice be heard on a variety of topics in the hobby. We are leaving the floor open to you! So comment away! But please no language and keep your answer clean as we do have a younger following as well.

Today's Topic will be about TTM (through the mail autographs)

Do you do through the mail autographs? What's the best one you have ever gotten? What's your usual return time?

Let's hear your thoughts!

Retail Break 'Em: 2013-2014 Panini Prestige Basketball

When sorting cards the other day I realized that I didn't have many of this years basketball rookie cards. So when recently taking a trip I found 6 retail packs of Panini Prestige basketball that I knew would help build upon my 2013-2014 basketball rookie card collection.

In each pack of Panini Prestige basketball retail is 5 cards. One of those cards is a rookie. Costs on these range depending on where you buy them. I bought these from Dollar Tree for $1 each. So I got a steal.

Now onto the results:

Here are the 24 base cards into stacks. I put the best players on top. I like the design as Panini stuck with the usual Prestige layout. It also seems there is more game action shots as well.

Didn't quite land the big name rookies I had wanted, but rookies are rookies and you just never know who will step up when.
Overall, for $1 a pack. I am not complaining at all. I picked up 6 rookie cards I didn't have and some PC players too.

As always, your thoughts are welcomed!

Hobby Break 'Em: 2013 Painini Prominence Football Hobby Pack

When you think hobby pack, you most likely are not thinking about a mini box. However, that is the case with Panini Prominence. Each hobby box comes with 3 mini boxes or what they call hobby packs. This is a break of just one of the three. Every "pack" comes with 5 cards. One being an autographed hit. Each pack runs about $45.

There isn't any big pulls here but this product can provide some and some nice looking ones!

I can't seem to get away form Gavin Escobar and Knile Davis in my packs! They continue to haunt me. Especially Escobar who I have had an auto hit of multiple times this year in my breaks.

I like the base card design in Prominence. It's plain and simple, yet elegant. The cards are also thick like memorabilia cards.

My hit of the box:
I know some really don't like the looks of these Rookie Field Plates, but I say they are crazy. This design is spectacular! The end zones with team names. Color scheme and just enough room for the autograph and the outside marble border color that surrounds it just makes it even more impressive.

Back to the break itself, for $45, it's obviously a risk. You only get 4 base/rookie cards and the one hit. You obviously need that one hit to be something decent to get a good return here. This box didn't provide it, but I have seen others that have. When buying any form of packs and boxes, you are always taking a risk. That is just part of the hobby, but it can also be a fun part of the hobby when you get the right pulls.

Retail Break 'Em: 2 Rack Packs Of 2014 Topps Baseball Series 1

For some reason I cannot stay away from Topps Series 1 baseball this year. I don't know what it is. Is it the appeal of trying to get a big hit? Is it because I am ready for some new cards? Or is it because my baseball card need is coming back to life. Whatever it is, I am enjoying it.

This time I broke two Rack Packs or what Topps likes to now call "Jumbo Packs". You find 36 cards per pack along with 2 blue parallels (Walmart editions only) and 1 green parallel for $4.98.

Here is how I did:

I am actually enjoying the designs this year on Topps inserts. They are finally digging back into the past and taking time on designing them. These rack packs landed me my first gold of 2014 of soon-to-be Super Star Jurickson Profar of the Rangers.

Another thing about this years Topps Series 1 cards is the time you spend with them. Not only do I have to sort them like I normally would, but I have to check every card for a Sparkle Variation. Those are not the easiest to spot even with all of the visuals there is out there to find.

Let me know your thoughts on this break and if you have broken any yet.

Retail Break 'Em: 2014 Topps Baseball Series 1 Blaster Box

With a downed rookie season in 2013 football, my itch for baseball cards came back to life. I wished there was more than one company producing them, but happy there was some newer product out on the market to buy. Goodbye 2013 card season and hello 2014!

Topps has promised this year that retail will provide bigger hits. Not just the generic commemorative patch cards we are used to. I have actually seen people hit autograph/memorabilia cards and Red Sox World Series patch cards from blasters and the temptation for wanting to bust one had to turn to an reality.

Each blaster box of Topps baseball cards comes with 10 packs, 1 commemorative patch card and two Walmart exclusive blue parallels per pack.

Gotta showcase a Yankee base card of course!

Rookies seem a little harder to get this year. I only got 6 in this blaster box.

Now batting from my inserts...DEREK JETER!

My first mini of 2014 a Wade Boggs one

The patch cards are kinda cool and well designed this year.

For $20, I find this break to be worth it. The patch card alone could equal what you pay for the blaster or at least half of it. Then you add in the parallels and good amount of inserts and the possibility at hobby hits and you got a good deal.

Let me know your thoughts on this break and whether you have bought a blaster or not. Would also love to hear if you hit it big in one.

Retail Break 'Em: Dollar Tree's Ultimate Jumbo Pack Baseball

Recently, I visited a local Dollar Tree just to check out their card section since it had been awhile since I had done so. There was a good amount of variety from brands and sports and I was impressed that, despite being retail, that you can buy packs of cards for only $1!

Sitting on the bottom shelf was these re-wrapped packs in a baggy type material. There was baseball and football to choose from. The packages have 30 cards with a variety of brands and years promised in them. I thought, hey, for $1, why not? And gave one a try. I didn't expect anything spectacular and that was basically the result. You can never be to sure however on things like these so wanted to see if I could beat the odds.

Here is how I did:

I like the couple of Yankee additions here:

These are the top cards of the bunch:

Overall, you get what you pay for. It was a fun rip however not knowing what mysteries were within. Another thing to note about these is on the back is a wrapper autograph card redemption program where you mail in 4 of the wrappers along with a couple of bucks in exchange for an autographed card. That also struck my curiosity. I don't know if I will ever buy any again, but was kind of a unique offering especially since the wrappers would only cost you $4 total.

Let me know if you have ever ripped one of these or what your thoughts are on something like this.

What's In The Mail Box?

Recently I wrote a article for The Pack Gambler about my Flair Preview football set in their series, The Story behind that PC find, and if you haven't read that yet you can locate that story HERE.

There was something about writing that for them that made me want a second set. So I scoured eBay til I found one I could bid on. There is just something about this set. The memories. The feeling like a kid again and purchasing something just for the fun of it and not for the value. And the design was always something I really enjoyed with the micro etching.

I felt great when the auction ended at $.99 for the entire 30 card set. And now here is that set all in order starting from left to right. There is one player per team and it's a mix of rookies from the 1995 season among Hall Of Famers as well. I hope you enjoy viewing this set as much as I have.

And on you go!

Thought I would also include what the back looks like:

Now that you have seen why I am so high on this set, let me hear your thoughts on it and if you have ever done a double purchase just for the fun of it.

Get Upper Deck Rewarded From Dynamics Inc. ePlate Credit Card

For us sport card collectors, we know we are going to spend money. Not to mention most of that money will be spent using credit cards and most of those credit cards we use will have a rewards program giving us gift cards, air-fare, discounts and more. So why not use a credit card that will reward us with the very thing we use our credit cards for? Yup, that's right. Sport cards.
Upper Deck has launched the first trading card rewards program for the Dynamics ePlate™ Visa® credit card . This lets consumers earn exclusive Upper Deck Trading Cards purchases.

Here are a couple of the ePlate Credit cards and what they look like.
For every $5 spent on the ePlate, you get one digital card. There are 250 digital cards in a set. Once you complete a 250 digital card set from your chosen sport (There is also an online trading forum where you can trade your double digital cards with others to help you complete your set and help them with theirs as well), you can trade those in to get a pack of UD Infinite cards from your chosen sport. These are real, physical cards that come in a wrapper of 5. Dynamic Inc was nice enough to mail me a pack to show off to you and as an example of what you can find. I must also note there is no-fee option $10 spent version of ePlate called ePlateEZ that enables you to earn digital cards with every $10 spent and helps you complete your collection faster.

What makes these cards so special and so rare is you can ONLY EARN THEM from this rewards program. You can't buy these cards in stores or online. Another cool thing is that you can find autographed versions of the real physical cards! Big names to from multiple eras such Joe Namath and Russell Wilson, Julius Erving and Chris Paul, and Jack Nicklaus and Rory McIlroy plus many more!

I was lucky enough to open up a pack of the physical pack of basketball cards, though I didn't hit one of those sweet autographed cards I was impressed with the look of the cards and here is how I did:

The cards look even better in person. They are thick like a memorabilia card, have a gold bottom border and UD Infinite in gold. The players are all positioned to the forefront with a rainbow school picture type of background. Very elegant. This pack also packed a punch with legends Larry Bird and Michael. Jordan.

If you want to find out more or want to sign up for the ePlate Credit Card, you can find the sign-up application and even more information on their website that you can find HERE

Let me know if you sign-up and your thoughts on this program. Would love to hear your feedback especially if you earn a pack of UD Infinite cards.

What's In The Mail Box?

This was a dual mail day from Jammin JDcards. The first two cards were from the Topps Prime Football 2013 break I was in. The rest of the cards from his awesome site where he has an unimaginable amount of cards for sale. Something for everyone I think.

I landed the Falcons in this break. I didn't hit it huge but I do like the parallel of Desmond Trufant who could be a rising star in the league.

As you can see with other past mail days, an aim has been for Rueben Randle cards. And this was another great addition to my Randle PC.

Here is another Randle goodness along with a couple more Jernigans for that PC. Also some bonus Giants cards thrown in by Jammin JDcards.

A pretty nice mail day I think. I really like the Randle addition. Finest is one of my favorite Topps products other than Chrome. And it was very nice of Jammin JDcards to throw in some bonuses, thanks again for those!

If you are looking for something for your collection, I strongly recommend checking out Jammin JDcards first. I would be shocked if they didn't have something you need. You can check out their website HERE. And while you are there don't forget to join in on some box breaks as well! Good Luck hunting!
