Hobby Topic

Another post in our new series Hobby Topics. This is not so much a post for us to comment about or give our opinions on, this is your chance to let your voice be heard on a variety of topics in the hobby. We are leaving the floor open to you! So comment away! But please no language and keep your answer clean as we do have a younger following as well.

Today's Topic: Should Card Companies Work Together To Help Improve The Hobby?

Do you think card companies coming together to improve the hobby will be better than them battling it out? Should companies start to help each other improve? Would this hurt the hobby if they did?

Let's hear your thoughts!

Hobby Break 'Em: 2013 Upper Deck Thor The Dark World 8 Pack Break

Being a collector of everything and a fan of Marvel comics and movies, yup you can call me a full-time nerd, I thought it would be fun to be able to break some packs of Thor The Dark World.

There are 8 cards per pack of Thor The Dark World. Two of those may be subset cards along with one sticker. You can find sketch cards, rare autographs and costume cards from the movie. Each pack is a little under $5.

Now onto how I did:

Upper Deck even does a great job with mostly borderless photography cards for entertainment cards as well giving you the best action shots from the movie.

There are also two subsets within the Thor base set:

STICKERS!

Who doesn't want a costume card of the one and only Natalie Portman? This is also the second best costume card you can get from the set.

Very cool 1/1 Sketch Card . I have always been a fan of these.

This final card, though not very valuable, is so sweet. It's printed on very thick acetate and has a 3D look to it.

Overall, for only 8 packs, I totally scored. A 1/1, a costume card and cool designed insert.  Doesn't get any better of a break than that.

As always, your thoughts are welcomed on this break and the product and let me know if you have tried any of these.

Poll Friday: Which ONE Of These Players Would You Want Any Rookie Card Of? Results!!

In our second week of Poll Friday, I posed this question, Which ONE Of These Players Would You Want Any Rookie Card Of? Only 13 of you voted, hopefully this weeks topic will intrigue you more and more will vote. It's hard to keep a segment like this when no one or not enough of you vote.

Before we go onto next weeks poll, lets take a look at this past weeks results, you can check them out below:

The winner of my poll for Which ONE Of These Players Would You Want Any Rookie Card Of? is not a surprise to me. I expected Mickey Mantle to win but didn't know by how much. I was a bit surprised by votes for Yasiel Puig and Ichiro on this list with so older Hall Of Fame players to vote for. Let me know your thoughts on this poll as well.

Now onto this weeks poll, I like to mix up these polls. Some may be like last weeks asking you about certain players and cards, others will be companies based and I may throw in a blog related one here and there. This upcoming weeks poll is Which Companies Do You Buy Cards Of? PLEASE TAKE the 2 seconds out to vote. Just a click of the mouse is all that it takes.  Let your voice be heard on which companies you buy cards of. You can select more than one. I for one am very curious which ones will be the most popular.

Review: Panini Gold Standard Basketball 2013-2014

A box of cards that come shipped in a box the shape of a gold brick, how can you not want to give it a try? One of Panini's most popular brands among NBA collectors makes an awesome return in 2013-2014 packed with everything that collectors want. Just see for yourself!

Before I start my review, I would like to say thanks to the WONDERFUL people at Panini America for providing us with this box to review. Here are many places you can find Panini America: official site, blog, Twitter, and Facebook. If you don't follow them at all..you should! They interact with you on Twitter, have contests on their blog and Facebook and the site is also fun to visit!

Now onto the review:

  • One Metal Card Per Box
PRICE: You can find most boxes around $170

WITHIN THE BOX:

Tyler Hansbrough #d 34/199

Inserts:
Dwayne Wade Metal Card

Memorabilia (non-autographed):
Kemba Walker Black Gold #d 5/25
Blake Griffin Gold Records (14k Gold) #d 15/20

Autographs/Autograph Memorabilia
Ryan Kelly Memorabilia Auto Rookie Card
Quincy Acy Gold Strike Autograph #d 242/299
Phil Pressey Gold Strike Autograph #d 177/299
Isiah Thomas Gold Strike Autograph Redemption #d /299

DESIGN:
If you are looking for an overall product with eye appeal, well you found one right here. From the base cards to the autographs, everything is gold and has a shine to it.

The Black Gold jersey cards look outstanding. A nice size swatch and a decent shot of a player has this card well balanced in design. Not too much of one thing or another.

And the Gold Record design paying tribute to Rock And Rollers looks great as well printed in black and gold with the gold record being an actual piece of 14K gold.

And all autographs are ON CARD! That also helps with design in the product as its much more elegant without stickers.

The metal cards, my first one, are very heavy and a very unique collectible to be had.

COOL NOTES:  Look for Solid Gold Cards with photos on real 14 Karat Gold. This is very cool!
Also you can find 25 short-printed variations cards featuring players wearing the jerseys of every team they've played for. Makes for quite the chase! Also in this years product is four brand-new autograph inserts all numbered to 299 or less!

THOUGHTS:
Well, this was my first time ever opening this product because it is expensive but I must say I am overly impressed. The appeal from the outside of the box, a gold brick, the value (at least in this box) and the overall design of this product makes me wonder why I hadn't tried it earlier. I guess the fear of not pulling back my money's worth was part of the problem. With a great break of the product like this one, hitting the Griffin as my top card in the pack may help tempt me to come back again. I must state again,  with every product, there is some risk involved but if I am going to take such a risk, I would take it with a product like this one that has so much to offer.

You ask what does it have to offer, I say on-card autographs, glimmer and shine, chances at a card completely made of gold and cards with gold pieces in them. Almost every card being numbered helping values. Not to mention and I will say it again, a really nice design.

One of the weird and only disappointing thing I found with the product was that every card is numbered EXCEPT the autographed/memorabilia rookie cards. Those are supposed to be one of the premier hits in a box break and not to find it numbered was a bit odd.

However, overall, I like Gold Standard and wished Panini would extend this brand back out to the NFL. Design and on-card autos alone would help sell it.

BREAKING NEWS: IT'S BAAAAAAAAACCCCKKKKK!!!

If you have been around Sport Card Collectors in the past year, you might have participated in something called the Monthly Contests. On my birthday today, I am happy to announce IT HAS RETURNED! The contest that this blog is well known for will run til at least October and will make it's anticipated surprise return on April 1st.

For those of you who may not be familiar with what the monthly contest is, every day I post up a game or a stat from multiple sports you must pick the winner of. If you get the game or stat right, you win a point. You get it wrong, you get zero points. There will be standings you can keep track of your score on and the the top three at the end of 20 days win prizes. The only rules here is that you must be a U. S. Resident and you must be into fun challenges.

There will be a few changes to the contest this time around, mainly in the prize department but others will be made as well. Main prizes for this contest will be provided by Jammin JDcards and BCW Supplies. I may throw some in as well depending on the amount of participants, Panini reviews we do and what prizes are offered for the month. Make sure you are following both Jammin JDcards and BCW Supplies and tell them thank you for the prizes and their support. I will post the prizes along with the standings at the end of this month followed by your first entry into the contest on April 1st. In this contest, remember you are never out and nothing is ever randomed. You control if you win or not by picking games/stats right. This is what makes this contest so much fun.

I hope you all are as excited as I am about its return! Let me know your thoughts in comments about this breaking news.

Review: Panini Crown Royale Football 2013

Always a crowning achievement with its red hot, must have rookie silhouettes, Crown Royale sticks with it's roots again for 2013. Always a fan favorite and one of mine, this box was fun to open and I would say I did pretty well with this break.

BOX BREAK DOWN:
  • 4 Packs Per Box, 5 Cards Per Pack
  • 4 hits
  • 4 Crown Cut Rookie cards per box
PRICE: You can find most boxes around $95

WITHIN THE BOX:

Inserts:
Andrew Luck Silver Parallel #d 133/199
Chris Thompson Gold Parallel #d 68/99
Stevan Ridley Purple Parallel #d 3/5
Tom Brady Test Of Time Die-Cut insert

Memorabilia (non-autographed):
LeVEON Bell Rookie Royalty Jersey Card #d 25/99
Gavin Escobar Heirs Throne #d 114/299

Autographs/Autograph Memorabilia
D.J. Swearinger Crown Royale Rookie Auto #d 46/125
LeVEON Bell Rookie Prime Silhouette #d 185/299

DESIGN:
I would say get your eyes checked or fix your glasses if you don't find Crown Royale a beautiful product. From the all crown die-cut base cards to the mouth watering rookie silhouettes there isn't anything here not to like.

I have always been a fan of the base cards. I like the crown with the foil on it. They look great and something I would put a set together of. Something that looks even more outstanding on that design, is the silver parallel. That one really stood out to me. The rainbow foil color completely brings out the design and makes me reminice to the late 90s when I was first introduced to the product.

To me, when it comes to design, it is all about the autographed silhouette cards. These are the premier rookie cards to own on the market. Most come with a nice swatch of patch, sometimes multiple colors, and an on-card auto. You mix that with the terrific layout job and you have a winner. There are also parallels of these as well just like the base cards of Gold (numbered to 25), Green (numbered to 10), Purple (numbered to 5) Blue (numbered to 1).

COOL NOTES:

New to this years product is on-card Crown Die Cuts & Panini's Choice from the 2013 40 RPS Rookies along with on-card Silhouettes, on-card Crown Die Cuts and On-card Panini's Choice of autographs of current stars. My favorite is the silhouettes in this product and with the extremely rare Legendary Silhouettes that features a jumbo swatch of legendary material and an autograph my day is made with two different ones to chase.

THOUGHTS:
As for this break, this was a great one. Low numbered Ridley parallel hit to 5 and LeVEON Bell Rookie Silhouette. There was no complaint coming from me on this one as I felt there was great value in this break.

Overall, I am a huge fan. With three parallels, 4 hits, tremendous design all around and a chance at one of the most popular rookie cards on the market, I know I want more. The one thing to keep in mind is that not every box comes with a Rookie Silhouette as I have seen and even found for myself in past years. I believe I heard they fall four to a case. Without hitting one of those in your box it could be rough to get back the value you might pay for the box. I still say it's worth the risk, but just keep that part in mind if you don't happen to hit a silhouette. Like with all products, some risk is involved.

CAPTION THIS!

"I am the base-burglar!?"
Product: 1999 Topps
Card #:
Let's hear your CAPTION THIS for this card! (keep it clean, no language too!)

WIN!! These Nolan Ryan/Derek Jeter Cards!

Last summer I went to one MASSIVE Yard Sale and came across a huge amount of sports cards, mainly baseball, that I showed off on this blog. I also have spent the last 6 months sorting through them. Finally I have them in piles I want them in for now before I move onto the next round of sorting, but I did notice quite a few doubles along the way. Normally I stick these doubles into huge yard sale boxes that I give away or sell real cheap to kids hoping to entice them to continue on with the hobby. This time I decided to yank some out to share with you guys.

So throughout the baseball season I will be randomly picking times to give some away. They will usually consist of 5-6 80's and 90's base cards but of stars such as Ken Griffey Jr, Derek Jeter, Tony Gwynn, Frank Thomas, Cal Ripken Jr., some 90's baseball inserts, a few Yankee card lots, among other stars including today's featured giveaway lot of Nolan Ryan with bonus Derek Jeter cards because I love you guys! Some players will have multiple contests so keep checking back in.

Here is the healthy assorted lot you are entering to win:

All you have to do to enter is, to tell me which team you think will be the most improved . Like I said, will be very easy to enter. There are only two rules, one, this contest is OPEN TO U.S. RESIDENTS ONLY (sorry), and you gotta have fun.

Entries for this contest are due by March 24th 2014 by midnight and a RANDOM winner will be announced on March 25th 2014.

Good Luck to everyone that enters and thanks for supporting this blog!

Review: Upper Deck USA Football 2013

Coming off from a very successful 2012 campaign with its inclusion of Jameis Winston's first time on cardboard, Upper Deck brings back USA Football for a sophomore season!

BOX BREAK DOWN:
  • Two to Three Regular Autograph Cards
  • Two to Three Memorabilia Cards
  • One Autographed Memorabilia Card #'d to 49 or less
  • 24 Packs Per Box, 5 Cards Per Pack

PRICE: Boxes are around $70

WITHIN THE BOX:

Base Cards:
The set consists of 100 cards,  featuring 50 top NCAA D-1 recruits from the United States and Canada

Inserts:
N/A

Memorabilia (non-autographed):
Shane Cockerille
Weslee Richmond
Harley Kirsch

Autographs/Autograph Memorabilia
Mason Ewing Base Auto
Amari Barret Base Auto
Jevante Stanley/Jordan Grimes/Nate Delaney Team Canada Triple Auto
Delando Johnson Patch/Auto #d 20/49

DESIGN:
The design is similiar to another Upper Deck football brand a few years back. But, I think it works here well with the color schemes chosen. I like the fact they chose two color schemes in the base, autograph and memorabilia cards for both USA and Canada.

I also like the fact they used landscape design on the memorabilia cards.

COOL NOTES:
New to this year is autographs, and memorabilia featuring not only the USA under-19 team, but also the under-18 and under-16 teams too. Also new to this years is your chance to collect cards and autographs from Team Canada's under-18 and under-16 team. Great additions.

THOUGHTS:  At first glance you look at this product and say, "who in the cardboard are these guys?" And yes, I had the same reaction. But, that's what you expect with guys 19 and under. I look at this product as future value. These are the first cardboard of potential stars and what I consider Upper Deck's version of Topps Bowman with the prospecting it features.

For $70 or a little under, you get at least 6 hits and this box had 7. A ton of cards and possibly a ton of future value here if these guys pan out. The one thing I wished Upper Deck did do was add some inserts or parallels. Because if your pack didn't produce a hit, you got base cards. I think there needs to be an added  insert of some-sort. Other than that, an interesting product to keep an eye on in the future.  You just never know when one of these guys could turn big.
