HOBBY TOPIC

Another post in our new series Hobby Topics. This is not so much a post for us to comment about or give our opinions on, this is your chance to let your voice be heard on a variety of topics in the hobby. We are leaving the floor open to you! So comment away! But please no language and keep your answer clean as we do have a younger following as well.

Today's Topic: The Prices Of Packs and Boxes

Has the price increases on packs and boxes pushed you away from buying them? Do you only buy singles now? What prices do you find reasonable (also think about what the companies must pay to get the players to sign for them and to acquire memorabilia pieces)

Let's hear your thoughts!

Collecting Basics 4: Base Cards

Now that you have chosen your sport, picked up a couple of packs or boxes of cards, now comes the best part, opening them. However, if you are new to collecting, you may not know what you are looking for or what to find. That's where I hope to come in to help. For the next few posts of Collecting Basics, I hope to break down what you can find in a pack of cards. From base cards to insert cards to parallel cards to memorabilia cards to autographs.

Today's topic will be covering BASE CARDS. Most of these topics won't take very long to post about. Just trying to do my best to explain each part of the hobby the best way I can.

Base cards are the cards in your pack that will make up most of it. If you have lets say a 10 card pack, more than likely 8 of those cards will be what's called base cards. These are plain cards that make up the base of the product. They may be shiny, numbered (usually to a higher number), thick, thin, framed, straight-up photography, but you can almost always tell which ones they are.

Here are examples from 2014 Topps Baseball:

Here is the main base card design. On the back you will find the stats and to the top right of the card (in landscape form) the number the card is in the set.

Some cards may have writing like Future Stars (shown below), All-Star, RC (rookie card, shown below as well) and other titles. These too are base cards as you can tell by the picture of the back of the card. These cards are called subsets. They are slightly different than the base with the extra writing, but still make up the set and still are the base of the product. In older days, they made some subsets a little more challenging to find in a box of cards so they were almost inserts. Now they seem to fall a few in every pack.

Even this card below is a base card. This one in particular is a No Hitter subset.
I hope this helps you decipher what base cards are in the pack of cards you just opened. If you need anymore help with the explanation, please feel free to ask below.

Part 5 of Collecting Basics I will cover parallel cards.

As always, HAPPY COLLECTING!

What's In The Mailbox?

Well, technically this was in yesterday's mailbox. This is my prize from ESPN Mint Condition (if you don't know who they are they're a web series that does episodes on everything the hobby and do product reviews and giveaways on their Facebook and Twitter) that I won from a Twitter Contest they held after reaching a certain number of followers.

There were three prizes up for grabs with three winners. None of the winners knew what they would get except that it was a decent prize. Some massively nice! The prizes were a Fleer Retro Michael Jordan autograph, a 2012 Panini Black RG3 Patch/Auto rookie and an assorted lot of 20 autographed/memorabilia cards.

After spending two months of helping lead the charge in getting ESPN Mint Condition the followers they needed, which my followers can vow for, I thought that my chances were pretty good at landing the top prize in my eyes, the Jordan autograph. Or at least the second place prize in the RG3 auto/patch. But as always, you throw that word random in and in the end I got the third place prize which was as follows:

I was a little disappointed to say the least. I know I probably stopped you in your tracks when I stated that knowing exactly what you are thinking, "boy this ones complaining about winning a FREE giveaway. What a jerk!" First off I just wanna say, I am not complaining. I am disappointed. There is a difference. Secondly, if you saw the amount of time I spent helping get them followers, I know some of you did, you would understand my disappointment and understand why I a little upset. However, a lesson was learned from this contest and any I enter going forward. The extra effort and "brownie points" do not always guarantee you a top spot or even second best. So it's best just to enter it like everyone else.

Overall, this wasn't a bad mailday. Just wasn't what I had hoped and expected for. In the end, my losing may be your winning! As my disappointment may benefit you guys, my fans, as I see a future giveaway with some of the cards above for you guys. As always, I like to pay-it-forward.

Thanks again to ESPN Mint Condition for the cards and good luck to the other two winners in that contest as you sure have some sweetness coming your way.

90's Rip Party: 1995 Skybox Premium Football Box Part 3/3

Recently I busted a box of 1995 Skybox Premium Football. I did this for many reasons. One, I wanted the nostalgia. Two, I wanted to have a fun bust where I wasn't worried about value because that's the 90's way of collecting and I like it! Three, I liked the design of the overall product from base cards to inserts.

Back when I first bought some of the product in 1995 pack prices were about $2.99. I remember going into our local gas station (my second hobby shop option at that time) and picking up a few packs at a time counting down the seconds til I got to open the beautiful product in the car. Flash-forward 19 years later,  I got this box for $18 and it came with 36 packs, 10 cards per pack and a whole lot of fun. That moment of running back to my car to bust the packs came back as well, except this time I opened the box that UPS came with and ran to my couch. I savored every minute of opening every pack. The only issue I had with this box was the cards sticking to one another in the packs. I guess it's something you have got to think about when buying older product and not something I even considered when I bought it. Lesson learned.

As you notice by the title, I am breaking down this 90's Rip Party version of 1995 Skybox Premium into 3 sections. The first post I did on the base cards, rookie cards and two of the subsets that you can find HERE. The second part I moved onto my favorite subset of all-time called Mirror Image that you can find HERE. Today, I will finish off the three part box break with the inserts that I pulled from the box.

As you most likely know, 1990's inserts were some of the most unique inserts around in terms of creativity, design and pizazz.  Skybox Premium Football had some of each.

The first two inserts are unique and printed on foil-board. Quickstrike featured veteran players with some of their big plays from the previous season. The numbers behind the player represents the score of game they made the big play in, while the description on the back describes what they did. These inserts fell 1:15 packs.

The Promise featured promising players from the 1994 class and fell 1:24 packs

One of my favorite inserts of the 90's was Paydirt. The rainbow colored background, the yardage on the side til "paydirt" , and the way the player seems to "jump" off the cardboard made these really easy on the eyes and these pictures by far do not do them justice. Another fun thing was finding these 1:4 packs! So you get at least 9 in a box. A great way to try and get a set!

And this concludes our three part 90's Rip Party break of 1995 Skybox Premium Football. I had a lot of fun breaking this box while sharing my results along the way.

Let me know your thoughts on my break and which part you enjoyed the most and which cards were your favorite.

NPN Of The Week

With the lack of me buying a lot of newer products, I haven't had many NPN addresses to share in weeks. So in return this Sunday, I wanted to show off an NPN I just got in from Upper Deck. By far, they are the easiest NPN of them all. Just go online to their website that you can locate HERE.

Was really excited to find this in the mail box. You just never know which one of these guys will be the next Tiger!

Let me know your thoughts on this NPN mail day from Upper Deck and what the best one you have ever received from them.
