REVIEW:2016 Topps Strata Baseball ( AUTOGRAPH GIVEAWAY)

One of the more popular products on the market swings it's way back in 2016. It's one that I enjoyed picking cards up of from football (still sad Topps no longer has cards in that market) but never dipped a taste into the baseball world of it, til now.

What were my thoughts on this product, well, read on!

In every box of 2016 Topps Strata baseball, you will get one silver pack with 2 cards inside. Both cards will be hits and guaranteed one on-card autograph and one relic card per box. Boxes currently run $76.

The product has all of the key rookies of 2016 including Corey Seager, Stephen Piscotty, Max Kepler, Aaron Nola, Trea Turner, Rob Refsnyder, Kyle Schwarber, Greg Bird, and Luis Severino. It also has some of the big names of today and yesterday.

For a full look at the checklist, check HERE.

With no base cards for this product or inserts (other than parallels for the hits) let's get down to business right off.

My first pull is a base version of Clearly Authentic MLB Authenticated Relic Card of Kyle Schwarber. It's a beautiful card. The relic is MLB Authenticated and layered under acetate. I think this will help keep the relic from being damaged. The card is also very thick and well made.
.
There are also parallels to find of these which I bet look overly impressive when you put laundry tags, buttons and logo patches under the acetate.
  • Blue: sequentially numbered to 99.
  • Green: sequentially numbered to 75.
  • Black: sequentially numbered to 50.
  • Gold: sequentially numbered to 25.
  • Baseball: Includes a piece of game-use baseball: sequentially numbered to 3.
  • Red MLB Silhouetted Batter Logo Patch: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Laundry Tag: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Button: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Button Hole: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Majestic Logo Patch: numbered 1/1.
My other pull from the box was a Strata Autograph of Omar Vizquel. Once again a very cool looking card and well designed. The middle where the autograph is see-thru but I put a white piece of paper under it so you guys can see the autograph better.

As with the rest of the product, there are parallels to find of these as well.
  • Orange: sequentially numbered to 125.
  • Blue: sequentially numbered to 99.
  • Green: sequentially numbered to 75.
  • Black: sequentially numbered to 50.
  • Gold: sequentially numbered to 25.
  • Red: sequentially numbered to 1/1.
Other hits not found in my box include,

Clearly Authentic Autographed Relic MLB Authenticated Cards with parallels of:
  • Blue: sequentially numbered to 99.
  • Green: sequentially numbered to 75.
  • Black: sequentially numbered to 50.
  • Gold: sequentially numbered to 25.
  • Red MLB Silhouetted Batter Logo Patch: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Laundry Tag: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Button: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Button Hole: numbered 1/1.
  • Red Majestic Logo Patch: numbered 1/1.
Strata Signature Patch Cards that are numbered to 25 with parallels of Gold /5 and RIVET that are 1/1's.
Strata Signature with parallels of Gold /25 and Red 1/1.
Dual Autograph that are numbered to 5
Cut Signatures that are numbered 1/1.

Overall, it's a beautiful product and can pack a punch. My box seemed a bit weak for the cost of it, but I would put this product in that big risk/big return category especially with only 2 cards to bank-on. Not every box will pack a punch, but when it does, you will feel it. I have seen some of the cards on eBay and they have made me drool on this keyboard I am typing on. Go ahead and look them up yourself!

If you like to risk on a product, this is one I would highly suggest, if not, well, better to just pick up singles.

Pro: I like the MLB authentication and this product could give some great hits. I also like the style

Con: Its an expensive gamble for such a small amount of cards

  2. Thanks for the contest! As with most higher end sets, the pro is the cards tend to look great, and the biggest con is the price and the risk of getting a dud of a box.

  3. Thanks for the giveaway!
Pro: Very nice hits, guaranteed an on card auto
Con: High Risk product, could always wind up with duds

  4. Love the look of Strata and the on card autographs. Con is that you only get 2 cards? So it's more like a pack and not a box. Thanks as always

  6. Thanks for the contest! High end boxes are always lottery tickets so you just have to be comfortable with the chance you are taking.

  7. One pro : No base

One con: A two-card box provides for a very high risk break.

    Thanks for the chance!

  8. Nice contest! Pro: As an autograph collector, very slick-looking product for signatures. Con: Cards look way too glossy to keep an IP signature for very long.

  9. I like that there is no base to have to worry about when you're only getting 2 cards per box. It's a bit high-risk for me, though.

  10. Pro: Some really great hits in this set.

Con: The MLB Authentication can be a bit wonky. For instance on the Schwarber card if you look up the authentication code it says "SWATCH OF KYLE SCHWARBER GAME USED BROKEN BAT MILWAUKEE VS CHICAGO CUBS 9/23/15. ORIGINAL HOLOGRAM# JB 022997" and then when you look up the original number, only then does it tell you the actual details. I understand why they might "re-authenticate" a piece but just would be easier if they used the original number

  11. I love the mlb authentication stickers on them as it makes them look more high end. I don't like how there is no base. I always feel bad when the hits are not good and you don't even get any base cards with it.

Cons: Not the best checklist & boxes r hit or miss.
    Thx for another great review.

  15. I love the holos and the acetate. They make for very nice relic cards. The only problem with this product is the cost. You can get burned if you get a bad box. If you can't afford it, go for singles.

I'd say this was an above average box. Schwarber was a hot rookie before he got hurt. Plus, Visquel has a huge following. I call them the "Cult of Visquel." I've seen them pay crazy prices for some of his cards.

  16. Really love this product for the sleek design and strong list of high caliber players. The strong design also makes it feel worthwhile even if you don't pull a great player. The biggest con for me is that some teams are really under represented especially in comparison to other teams. The player list could be about twice as deep.

  17. Love the holos, not a fan of the collation

  18. Pro: Nice looking cards and on card autographs
Con: I sound like the rest, price of that box for 2 cards is crazy.

    Thanks for the chance SCC!

Con - A little better checklist

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thank Topps and SCC
    Pro Super cool cards

Cons May end up with a rather standard card

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks for the giveaway and Topps for the box.

Pro- format, they cut right to the chase with no filler.

Con- checklist has some suspect players included for a product at this point and, as always, the possibility of redemptions with their terrible policies towards them.

  22. Thanks to Topps for the box and SCC for the review.

Pro - These are good-looking cards and the MLB Authentication stickers are fun to look up.

Con - Like all card products, this is a gamble. With just a couple of cards in the box, it is hard to pull a PC card from busting boxes.

  23. Thanks to you and to Topps!

Pro - I love the way these cards are made. Really unique.
Con - the price point makes it a huge gamble

PRO: I like this new acetate cover idea they've come up with (at least I think its new). I don't remember Topps ever doing this before.
CON: Well... there's no set. I like sets. I'm not paying $75 for two cards... ever. I liked Inception before it became just 4 hits and nothing else.

Pro: Solid checklist with no prospects
Con: Price point and the need to have a set like this (how many high-end sets do you need)?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Pro: The design of the relics is very appealing.

Con: Price point makes it difficult to buy but worth the chase.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for another great review and giveaway.
Pro big hit potential, great design, mlb authentication.
Con- no base, only 2 cards, still a good chance for a dud high end box.

    Thanks to Topps as well.

  34. Thanks for the review!
Pro: on card autos are the way to go!
Con: I am pretty risk-averse as a collector and so the cost-benefit analysis makes me shy away from ever buying a box...

  35. Pro - Love the designs on all the cards and how you can see what game the relic is from.
Con - 2 cards in a box is unfortunate, wish they were 5 card packs, 2 inserts (1 auto and 1 relic), and then 3 base.

  36. Pro - Beautiful cards that are well made.
Con - Wish for a few more cards and checklist a little on the weaker side

Pros: Love the clear autographs and the authentication. Love that it's kind of a lower cost high end product. I'm never going to drop $1000 on something like Topps Mint, but I might be a player at this price point (depending on the checklist).

Cons: I'm not a fan of having the relic under acetate. I like being able to touch the relic.

Since I'm logged in as anonymous, please message me via facebook if I win.

  38. Pro: Design by far. Dig the acetate over the bat slice.
Con: I would rather have base cards and inserts added to just like it was with football. Would help add some depth and value
