2012 Topps Prime 9 Home Run Legends Set

Back in 2012, collectors who bought 2012 Topps Baseball Series 1 found Prime 9 redemption cards that fell two per hobby box and were good for the Prime 9 card of a Home Run Legend of the Week.

On a weekly basis, Topps announced the Prime 9 Home Run Legend of the Week. Those that were holding the corresponding Prime 9 redemption card for that week (the card came with a number that matched the back number) could bring the redemp card to their local participating LCS and claim their Prime 9 Chrome refractor card.

Me, I don't have an LCS nearby so when I had bought 2012 Topps Series 1 those redemption cards were simply junk to me. Tossed away.

However, I was fortunate enough a few years ago when on vacation that the LCS I visit once a year, it's 2 states away, has always treated me good and had a full set that was never claimed and collecting dust and gave to me after I had made a good Topps purchase.

It's a really sharp looking set and I had forgotten about it til I stumbled into it while working on my sorting project.

Big names as you expect make up the 9 card set including Albert Pujols, Ernie Banks, Mickey Mantle,

Hank Aaron (All-Time Home Run King), Babe Ruth and Willie Mays.

It's definitely a set I plan to hold onto and put into binder pages now that I found it again.

I am still very grateful to the LCS that provided me with the set and I continue to support them yearly. So I guess you can say I participated in the promo, just in a different way.

What are your thoughts on this set? What about the Prime 9 promo? For those of you without an LCS, what do you do when you want to participate in the LCS ONLY promos that card companies run?

Let me hear your thoughts in comments!

REVIEW:2016 Topps Update Baseball Hobby Box (1:1,055 pull) And GIVEAWAY!

Topps Update is a late season release where collectors are chasing key rookie debuts from 2016 and key players that changed uniforms. I mean, you gotta update your team or player PC and not wait for the following year. I know I want to.

How did this years version go? Well, check it out and READ ON!

In every box of 2016 Topps Update baseball hobby box is 36 packs of 10 cards. So you are getting a ton of cards per box. There is also one autograph or relic card per box. Boxes will run you roughly $50.

The base set is loaded, as I said above, with key rookies and players in new uniforms. It also has a very HEAVY All-Star game presence. There are 300 cards in the base set with key rookie cards of Julio Urias, Jameson Taillon, Byung-Ho Park, Blake Snell, A.J. Reed, Tyler Naquin, Michael Fulmer, Nomar Mazara, Jose Berrios, Albert Almora, Hyun-Soo Kim, Trevor Story, Lucas Giolito, and Willson Contreras.

There are a few subsets to find and....

Some very nice base card images. This one, despite being a hated rivalry player, is one of the best.

As expected, there are also base card variations with different photos. I didn't pull one and did find it easier to search pack to pack to see if I did. I don't match the photos to find the difference, I use the codes on the back in the small print in the right hand bottom. It makes things much easier as the last few digits is all that matters instead of matching photo to photo.

The base cards will end in a 14, the Rookie Photo Variations will end in a 35 and the All-Star Photo Variations with a 58. I hope this helps you too.

Parallel time!

Gold parallels are always a find in any Topps flagship related product. They are numbered to 2016 and fall 1:7 packs.

Rainbow foil, 1:10 packs, find their way in the product as well.

There are tougher parallel finds such as Negative 1:87 packs (not numbered)

And Black (1:67 packs) that is numbered to 64

Other parallels not found in my box are,
  • Pink numbered to 50.
  • Platinum numbered 1/1.
  • SILVER FRAME numbered 1/1/
  • PRINTING PLATES numbered 1/1
Now onto the inserts.

There are plenty to find. I either got a parallel or insert per pack on average in my box.

Ichiro's major hits continues in the Update series. They are inserted 1:8 packs.

Elite players in the 3,000 hits club are found in this insert set and they are inserted 1:6 packs.

The fun and popular designs from Topps Fire found their way in the Update Series and are inserted 1:8 packs.

Can't argue with this card. The Mariners throwback colors look great with the splash paint appeal of Topps Fire. Don't you agree?

First Pitch pays tribute to the pop culture icons who threw out a ceremonial first pitch during the 2016 MLB season. These rank in my Top 20 favorite insert sets of all-time and are inserted 1:6 packs. You can also find inspirational Brady Kahle included as well. That's one for sure I want to find.

And finally, there are TEAM FRANKLIN showcasing top MLB players who are a part of the premier batting glove company's team and are inserted 1:8 packs.

Now onto my hit.

To be strictly honest, I was really expecting a single color relic in the box. It's my usual pull from Topps Series 1, Series 2 and Update. I have never pulled an autograph or anything else but one of those. So when this 3,000 Hit Club Gold Medallion showed up at an alarming 1:1,055 odds, I was in shock. It's numbered to 50.

Other hits not found in my box include:

Every relic card showcases material from the official 2016 MLB All-Star Game Workout Jerseys!

All-Star Stitches Autographed Relics numbered to 25, All-Star Jumbo Patches Autographs numbered to 6, All-Star STITCHES with a Gold Parallel numbered to 50 and a PLATINUM Parallel - numbered 1/1. ALL-STAR JUMBO PATCHES showcases National League or American League logo patches and are numbered to 6. ALL-STAR STITCHES DUALS are numbered to 25.ALL-STAR STITCHES TRIPLES are numbered to 25.

3,000 Hits Club Medallions like the one above are like the insert set but include an medallion. with a Gold Parallel numbered to 50, a PLATINUM Parallel numbered to 10 and a PLATINUM Parallel autograph numbered to 10. 500 Home Run Club Stamp Cards, First Pitch Relics have the actual ticket stub from the game featured and are numbered to 10. That's a great addition!! I would love to see future autographed versions Own the Name: Feature a letter from the nameplate of a game-worn jersey. Each card features one letter and is a 1/1!

Scouting Report Autographs, CHASING 3,000 autographed versions of the Ichiro set, 3,000 Hits Club Autographs are numbered to 25.Fire Autographs are numbered to 25.TEAM FRANKLIN autographs are numbered to 25.

Overall, this product will not be for the big hit seekers for hobby boxes anyways. Jumbo boxes come with an autograph and two relics. They run almost twice as much as the hobby as you would expect with bonus hits. But, better chances at some of the bigger epic pulls above I listed.

For those who can't afford the jumbo boxes, hobby is for the set collectors, team and player collectors, rookie collectors, ones who collect photogenic base cards and just those looking for an affordable rip on a rainy day.  Which today is one of those days so I expect you to rip one.

NOW GIVEAWAY TIME!!

Hidden Peyton

Yesterday, I blogged about sorting my 1999 1st Place football and as I continued I felt something a bit odd with this card.

It looks like a plain 'ole Mike Alstott card from here until you turn it over and realize that it was two cards instead of one.

Stuck to it? Just this sharp looking Excalibur insert that was missing in my box that falls 1:24 packs. It's also just some guy named Peyton Manning.

Does it get any cooler than finding your missing pull and then having it turn out to be one of the all-time greats? I think not!

Have you ever found a "stuck" card? What was it? Comment below!

Checklists

As you saw in a recent post, I have been sorting like crazy. My sorting process makes the man cave look like a crazy scientists experiment with piles of this here and piles of that there like I am about to build Frankenstein.

One of my first processes is after busting a box of cards, I try to put together the base set. If I complete it, that goes into a white count box. If it's partially completed and one I want to finish, that goes off to the side of the desk. If it's one far away or one that's none of interest to me, well, that gets broken down into 35 different piles. I am not kidding on that either and will do a post on my sorting breakdown soon as well.

For those sets I want to try to complete and finish, I write down my numbers to try and locate who is missing. So when I was doing my sorting from 1999 Collectors Edge 1se Place break, I used the checklist to write down who I was missing for an easier search.

It made me realize how much easier it was to have the checklist right in hand instead of having to Google the entire internet searching for one and taking the time to either print off a list or just writing down my needs from there.

Simply put, I miss checklists in my card packs.

I think it's also a good closing point in a set to have those checklists at the end. It's like a final chapter to a great book. The only thing I didn't like about finding the checklists is when companies in the 90's would turn them into parallels to. It kinda felt like you skipped a hit. Actually, this checklist pictured above is a perfect example as it's a Gold Ignot parallel.

So who else is with me in the bring back the checklists protest? Comment below!

Scary Cardboard

Just for fun being that it's Halloween, I thought I would post a card of a character I would find scary if it actually existed. (you may have seen this card before on The Card Bin)

I think Ultron would be the ultimate choice here for me.

Can you imagine having him on the loose? He is the ultimate Supervillian with superhuman levels of strength, speed, stamina, durability, and reflexes. He would be pretty much unstoppable in our world unless The Avengers existed to. Who knows even if they could stop him in the end? Scary thought.

By the way, in case you are wondering what this card is, it's a 2015 Upper Deck Marvel Dossier #12 ULTRON Foil Parallel. Despite how scary Ultron would be in real life, the card of him isn't. It's actually pretty sharp with the gold/rainbow shine.

What character on a card would you choose that you would find scary if existed? Let me know in comments and tell/show me which card it is and why you chose it.

Still Sortin

You ever just feel like you started a project you are never going to finish?

Well, I know I have.

In what has been a summer of sorting, I have posted before how I am going through my 23 years of collecting and tearing it all apart. I am finally sorting by teams and key players from each instead of by year, number, brand, etc. It will make things a bit easier in the end, but with time shortage on trying to do my project and with so much to go through, my task feels impossible.

In my most recent sorting, I finally got a few stacks of football rookies put away in binders

And started on putting a huge stack of baseball cards by team.

Originally, I was sorting on my desk and it was taking FOREVER. So I decided I needed to find another way to sort so I started to use my BCW Sorting Tray to my advantage instead of leaving it on my desk to have piles to stack in it.

It has cut my sorting time in half.

I know it sounds crazy, but once you get teams put into a certain slot you can really start busting through some piles.

I still have a very LONG WAYS to go but at least things are moving in the right direction. Time has been the biggest factor which I hope gets better to.

What current hobby project are you working on? Have you ever felt like you got over your head in one? Comment below!
