REVIEW:2016 Bowman's Best Baseball+GIVEAWAY!

If you grew up in the 90's collecting world, I just know how excited you were to hear that Topps had revived the Bowman's Best brand last year. I know I was.

For those collectors who missed out on that era, I believe your first time experience will be just as exciting as us who collected it back then. It may actually want to drive you to go back and try some from that era as well to compare.

So let's check out what the 2016 version has to bring us and shows me since I missed last years relaunch.

In master box of 2016 Bowman's Best baseball, you will find 2 mini boxes. There are 6 Packs Per Mini Box with 5 Cards Per Pack. There are two autographs to find per mini box and one atomic refractor to find per master box. Master boxes will run you less than $100. Not a shabby price.

The base cards are chromed, that alone should hook you, with a blurred top background and a team logo across the middle.

It is a small base set made up of 65 cards with most of it compiled of rookies. Meaning only stars in the base set too.

Rookie cards include all of the top ones like Albert Almora, Gary Sanchez, Michael Conforto, Luis Severino, Aaron Nola, Trevor Story, Miguel Sano, Blake Snell, Lucas Giolito, Nomar Mazara, Julio Urias, Corey Seager, Jose Berrios, Jameson Taillon, Kenta Maeda, Michael Fulmer, Willson Contreras, Tyler Naquin, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber.

As with other Bowman products, you gotta expect that Prospect insert. This is a 35 card set made up of upcoming prospects and the design is similar to the base other than the "card tear design" running the opposite way.

Onto the inserts that should take you back.

As expected, refractors are found. Even with this product, the word refractor can be found on the back as a tribute to the 90's. The only part I didn't like about it, the word refractor wasn't found on them all including....

The atomic that falls one-per-master box.

Or even on these. But, even though refractors are obvious, the wording is fun and I wished more consistent. The Betts is a green and the Goldy is a blue I believe.

Other parallels to find are...
  • Gold Refractor: sequentially numbered.
  • Orange Refractor: sequentially numbered to 25.
  • Red Refractor: sequentially numbered to 5.
  • SuperFractor: numbered 1/1.
Whoa! These not only look awesome, but took me way back to 1996. There are 30 cards in the set made up of prospects and veterans and legends, except my main guy Griffey.

Parallels for these include....
  • Atomic Refractor Parallel: sequentially numbered to 25.
  • SuperFractor Parallel: numbered 1/1.
Mirror Image brings you back to the 90's as well, especially to 1996 where I just picked up a few of them. I will show those later on! Some great player selections on here of veterans and prospects that should "mirror" them.

Parallels for these include....
• Orange Refractor – /25
• Superfractor – 1/1

Stat Lines reflecting on the most notable performances of the Baseball season, with current veteran and prospects.

Other inserts not found in my box are....

Baseball America Presents Prospect Forecast is focused on the leading prospect publication, Baseball America, that projects call-up dates for the game's biggest prospects. There are also Orange Refractors numbered to 25 and SuperFractors numbered 1/1.

The autograph checklist is loaded full of on-card auto finds. It makes the product even better. I didn't pull any of the insert autographed cards, but I did get four of the Best of 2016 Autographs.

These also include parallels such as this orange (looks super sharp) and
• Refractor
• Atomic Refractor – /25
• Red Refractor – /5
• Superfractor – 1/1

Other autographs in the product and not in my box include:

1996 Bowman's Best Autographs (I have seen images and WOW), Dual Autographs, Bowman Choice Autographs, AND look for low-numbered autograph parallels of the Stat Lines and Prospect Forecast with their respected parallels.

OVERALL, my break wasn't super strong, but I have seen some that were. There is a lot to offer in this product and with four autographs per box and the price being under $100, I think it's worth a gamble on. The checklist is pretty deep for prospects, rookies, veterans and a few legends that even though you won't hit it big with every break, but there is still that chance.

Also, if you can't afford a master box, see if you can get a mini box to give you a taste. Then decide from there.

Now time for the giveaway!!!

  1. Pro is the look of the Product and some of the Autos you can get.

Con I can't spend $100.00 on a box of cards alone

  2. Pro: I like that they included the word refractor on the backs. Con: it's a big one. They didn't put griffey in 96 throwbacks😜

  3. Pro: Cards have a nice look, I bought a box on that alone
Con: Fair/Poor correlation as my box had around 5 duplicates, for a $100 box with 12 packs you would expect better.

  4. Thanks Topps and SCC!

Pro: On-card autos are nice. Good checklist, too.

Con: I'm not sure I like the design with the team logo cut in half.

  5. Some nice stuff there! Bowman's Best is a good looking product, though seems like it's always taking a backseat to Bowman and Bowman Chrome. And yeah, it'd be great if card companies could be better about identifying on the back when a card is a refractor and/or other parallels.

  6. Thanks Topps:
Pro: Nice looking cards, loved the bowman's best product
Cons: Expensive and not really digging the Mirror Images subset.

  7. Pro: 4 on-card autos and the nice throwback 96 design insert
Con: small base set and the word Refractor not listed on the Refractor cards

  8. Pro: I appreciate refractors being labeled.
Con: While I like the design, it doesn't scream "Bowman's Best" to me. Feels more like Finest or some other non-Bowman product.

  9. Great autos you pulled! Two best Mariners prospects would be great for me! I don't like the logo on the back of the cards. Seems a little cheesy imo

    Con Slightly expensive

  12. That card needs to go to a Rockies fan! I love the base set design. They are very sharp this year. I'm really digging that Aaron insert as well. For me, the only cons are the price and the lack of veteran autos.

  13. As a Rockies fan, I'll enter this one!

Pro: Hexagons! My favorite shape on a card. See also 2003 Finest and 2014 Stadium Club Triumvirates.

Cons: Base cards looks a bit too much like Topps Bunt.

  14. Thanks for the contest and Topps for the box.

    Pro- on card autographs.
Con- too much like Topps Chrome, but without the color.

  15. Thanks Topps and Sports Card Collectors. I like the on card autographs and the low numbered autographs. The design looks a lot like their Bunt product, which they could have done better.

Con- Price point is a bit high for normal collectors. Thanks for the giveaway.

  17. I really like the 3D puzzle-y design that are on those autographs you pulled. The stat line inserts seem odd in that on the front the achievement is only generally referred to. I'd rather see some actual numbers on the front to tell me more about the accomplishments. The base cards look really crisp, and I like the tear away design even though I didn't identify it right away. The design running two different ways to differentiate some of the base cards is a neat touch. The price seems pretty good, and the checklist means you'll be getting some good players for sure. Someone will pan out! I hope that covers my pro and con. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity! I've been meaning to get back to following the blog more.

Con: very expensive, and some of your favorite players may not make the set

  19. Thanks to you and Topps for the contest!

Pro : On card autos and base design. It looks like Bowman took a bat to Topps Bunt and shattered it!

Con: Too expensive for me. 100 bucks for 30 cards? Then again, this products not geared towards me

  20. Thank you for the giveaways and Topps for the box.
Pros - Great looking card. The word refractor printed on the card is very handy.
Cons - as always the price. At around $100 a box its not for everyone.

  21. Pro: On card autos. Can't beat that.

Con: At $100 per box, to expensive for a cheap collector like me.

  22. Thanks to Topps and SportCardCollectors for these giveaways! Very much appreciated!
-Pros- I like the 4 on card autos and small base set.

  26. A BIG thanks to Sports Card Collectors and Topps for the privilege of entering this contest and putting out another great Bowman product!

Pros: Amazing card design with crisp picture quality, vibrant color, and Bowman timeless parallels. The autograph roster is loaded with prospects, rookies, and the big name stars we all dream of pulling. With 4 autographs in each full box and two autographs in each mini box, every collector can add some high quality autographs to their collection respective of any budget. The on-card autos make for a very clean look to the card and will impress every collector. Overall an A+ product!

Cons: Would like to see some sort of indication on the front of the card to identifying the prospects. Also some of the base auto's look like colored refractors autos which can trick some collectors. Finally, for the mirror image insert cards, having two players on different teams and even sometimes rival teams can be a bit awkward for team collectors. Overall, the cons are minor compared to the abundance of pro's for the product.

In conclusion: Get your hands on 2016 Bowman's Best as soon as you can! It's my new favorite product of the season and an impeccable addition for collector's of any age!

  27. Thank you Sports Card Collectors and Topps!

Pros: The card design is top notch again this year. Love the colors and the design.
Cons: On the higher end price wise for the hobby box, plus you don't know if the prospect you got is good unless you Google it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Pro: guaranteed autograph
Con: it's a bit pricey for what you get

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pro- very aesthetically pleasing design
Con- I don't really care for the master box concept. I would be fine with just buying a mini box for less $$

    ReplyDelete
  30. Pros: The design is very nice looking and the number of autos per box is really good for the price especially considering some of the potential hits.
Cons: not all of the refractors being labeled is annoying. I also don't love the mini box format and would prefer individual packs because it tends to be slightly cheaper in the long run.
