REVIEW:2018 Topps Update Baseball

The finale to the flagship trio, Topps Update released recently just as popular as it always has been. A lot of collectors dig it for players in updated uniforms and others dig it for rookies that didn't appear in the first two series.  Others just traditionally get it to build a base set of to finish off their trio.

I don't normally have a lot of success when it comes to pulling big hits with Update, so let's see if that changed in 2018...
In every box of 2018 Topps Update baseball, you will find yourself busting open 36 packs of 10 cards each. This is a hobby box break and comes with one autograph or relic card per box. Boxes run just under $60 each.

The base card design is the same as the first two series. The checklist is 300 cards and comes with lots of rookies including the top ones.

There are also many subsets

including one of my favorites ever. This is like David and Goliath here.

And even a Rally Goose!

Also just like with the first two series and most Topps products, there are base card variations.
Once again you will have to go blind to find the CMP code to find if you have one. I wished they had done what they did with Heritage Minors and had it written out on the bottom of the card identifying it.

CMP codes that end in...
90 are base
30 Sp's
32 SSP's

I found a 1:45 pack pull of an Sp in

THE MAN, Derek Jeter!

Also like the first two series, there are parallels to be had.Gold must be only one-per-box as that's all I found vs the Foil that fell 1:10 packs.

Now onto the inserts. There are many to find.

Inserts may have the following parallels, Blue, Black /299, Gold /50, Red /10, and Platinum 1/1.

StoryBook Endings. Those players that ended with great finales. There are 10 cards in the set to collect.

It's not a blur you see, it's these fast base runners in Don't Blink! There are 25 cards to collect in this set.

Celebrating 1983 again, there are 50 cards to find in this set.

And Topps Salute, there are 50 cards as well to collect.

Finally, at least for hobby, there is An International Affair. There are 50 cards of these to find as well.

Keep in mind, there are also retail only inserts to chase from Walmart and Target.

Now onto the hit.

I always, ALWAYS pull a relic from Topps Update and the flagships too. I expect 9 times out of 10 you will too. My find was at least a Yankee and an All Star Game swatch.

Other hits you may find that I didn't include,
  • Base Variations Autographs
  • 1983 Topps Autographs
  • 2018 Hall of Famer Highlights Autographs
  • An International Affair Autographs
  • Bryce Harper Highlights Autographs
  • Don't Blink Autographs

  • Postseason Preeminence Autograph
  • Storybook Endings Autographs
  • Topps Salute Autographs

OVERALL:Well, for $50, a relic doesn't really get you back your value. But, the rookie cards might later on in years. Just look at that 2011 Topps Update Trout rookie. Wow. Of course that was the one year I missed out on Update.

For me, this product is a retail buy only. I am usually pretty satisfied just from that and I get a relic that way as well. I have also seen some incredible autographs being pulled from retail too.

Please make sure to take a minute out to thank Topps for providing this box for me to review and to be able to add cards to a future promo.  Follow Topps on all social media sites and visit their SITE, as well.
