Hobby Topic: Your Collecting

We haven't done one of these in awhile, so I figured it was time.

With the hobby evolving so much, I think we all have had to make some changes to the way we collect.

So, I want to know, how your collecting has changed since the pandemic? Do you buy more? Buy less? Sell more? Flip? Change what you buy?

Let me know in comments!

  1. My buying has stayed relatively the same, what I focus on has evolved. Seeing that I sold everything I had off a long time ago, 4 years ago I got back into it and have been rebuilding. While I'm thankful I got a lot back before pandemic pricing took hold, I did start several reachable goals that, well, will be on hold for a bit. With anything late 20 and 2021; I'm avoiding that for now. However, I have been able to hoover up a lot of 90s/early 00s sets that seem to be overlooked that fit nicely with my evolving goals. Those months I'm able to go to a show I knocked out portions of my vintage needs as those dealers I work with aren't influenced by the current spikes. I don't have several cards I could be selling and making some money, but I' can never get the listings and isn't a priority to me. At the same time, those looking to make a killing on some listings have been sorely disappointed in final bids and have helped pad my collection.

  2. Except for Ginter later this year, I've given up on retail entirely. And I've stopped collecting Topps flagship baseball. It's a good time to focus on cleaning up want lists of older sets, vintage as mentioned above, and oddball things that the prospecting flippers aren't interested in. My collecting is diverse enough (and has never included much of the hyped rookies anyway), that I can always turn to something else off the beaten path that I can still enjoy for myself.

  3. I've cut back a ton... but the cutbacks took place even before the pandemic. The whole tax thing on COMC and eBay really made finding deals less common.

I started selling duplicates back in March... but so far mostly graded stuff. I'm not really a flipper at heart, but there's a point where I'd be crazy to not sell stuff sitting around in boxes.
