The Barry Sanders UD Spx Card That Makes Me Cry

If you remember awhile back in my box break of Spx Football 1997, I mentioned picking up some packs of 1996 Spx Football and how later on I would tell you a story that was attached to them. Well, now is the time to tell that story. It's a sad one so try not to get your keyboard wet from your tears and I will try to do the same.

In 1996, I went to the yearly local card show with my father looking for new additions to my Ken Griffey Jr collection and to be able to open up some card packs of new product as well. As I walked around the show from dealer to dealer looking for gems, I kept hearing these great things about this new product called Spx and how everyone had to get their hands onto it because of its design, rare inserts and the possibility of pulling autographs of Joe Montana and Dan Marino. I knew I had to have some.

I continued walking around the show a couple more table before deciding that I needed to make my way back to the main dealer who was the only one selling the Spx ( he also ran the ONLY local LCS and was running the show) to make sure it didn't sell out and saw that the box of Spx only had a third of it left. I knew I had to buy some then or I probably would miss out. Then I looked at the price tag of $6.99 per pack and knew if I wanted to add anything else to my collection at the show because of my low card budget, I would only be able to pick up a couple of packs. But I knew it was better than none. I began to reach into the box when my friend's uncle Tim came over to show me his stack of cards he had already bought from the box. There were some great looking cards that only made me want them more so I grabbed the top two packs.

I paid for the packs and handed one to my father and kept one for myself while Tim stayed to watch us open. The pack my father opened yielded him a Emmitt Smith base card (that later when I got back to my parents house my mother who collected Emmitt scooped away) and then my pack had this Barry Sanders base card in it:

Overall, I felt pretty good about this purchase. I just wished I could have bought more. But, at that time, Ken Griffey Jr took presence over everything else and I needed to save the little money I had left for him. So as my father and I were heading back to where we left off, I turned around to wave goodbye to Tim as I watched him reach into the Spx box again. Something told me to wait and see what he got, but I just wanted to get back to the show before I missed a needed Griffey card.

Just as we were closing in on the next dealers table, I all of a sudden felt a quietness over the show.  Dealers from other tables and fellow collectors at the show started to head towards Tim at the main dealers table, so my father and I did the same.

As we approached him I could see him holding an Spx wrapper backwards and the dealer handing him a toploader and penny sleeve. I managed my way through a few collectors and could see him holding in his possession a........STINKING JOE MONTANA SPX UPPER DECK TRIBUTE AUTOGRAPHED CARD!!!!! (if you are wondering what one looks like look HERE) I could only stare with my jaw dropped then immediately wondered what might have been. What would have happened had I not wanted more Griffeys and simply just picked up another pack or two? Would that have been mine? Could have that been mine? OH MAN! I can't believe it! What a card! I congratulated Tim and continued on with the show holding in possession a Barry Sanders card that would always make think back to that moment and what could have been.

So to this day, every time I stumble upon this card when sorting, it brings me back to that moment. The time I almost could have pulled a Joe Montana autograph. I then wonder how many other collectors have been through something like this. If you have, please share. I will try to hold back my tears as I hope you did for me.

May Contest Week 1

WELCOME! This is the first week of our May Contest. Now, compared to monthly contests in the past, this one is different. Instead of picking different winners daily, earning points, having the top three in points win prizes you only need to do this one entry where there will be one winner at the end of this week. This contest will run for three weeks and there will be a total of three winners. Once you have won for this month, you cannot win again as we want to spread the prize love around. Also, once you have won for the month, you will go into the WINNERS CIRCLE where you will not only be randomed to pick a prize for the month (all three names will be randomed and the person at the top of the list from the random picks their prize then so on), but will get a guaranteed spot in October's Monthly Contest. That is the ONLY way to be able to enter October's Contest. which has three prizes including a GRAND PRIZE from BCW Supplies.

This months prizes in the Prize Pot are:

1 SPOT INTO A FOOTBALL BREAK WITH JAMMIN JDCARDS
1 SPOT INTO A BASKETBALL BREAK WITH JAMMIN JDCARDS
And this lot from BCW Supplies:
Great prizes to be had!

Now onto how to be entered this week to be in the WINNERS CIRCLE for this months prizes and the WINNERS CIRCLE to be able to participate in October's Monthly Contest.
  1. Pick the winner of: St. Louis at Chicago Cubs
  2. Give me the TOTAL RUNS WITHOUT GOING OVER
  3. As a tiebreaker, the total amount of STRIKEOUT by both STARTING PITCHERS
  4. Any other tiebreaker will be broken up by a random
  5. Entries are due by Sunday Night May 4th by 8:00 pm e.t.
Your entries should look like this
  1. Cardinals
  2. 6
  3. 12
Good luck to everyone who enters. There are only two rules, one you must be a U.S. Resident to enter and you must have good clean fun.

PLEASE remember to not only follow BCW Supplies and Jammin JDcards on Facebook and Twitter, please tell them thank you for their generosity and check out their websites for tons of great stuff!

Winner Of The Two Autographed NHL Rookie Cards From The Pack Gambler

Well, this was a much easier contest to find a winner than I expected it to be. There were roughly 15 of you out of 30 that chose Boston. Than it came down to total goals WITHOUT going over. All of you stayed under the 6, however, one of you picked 6. So with picking Boston and picking the exact amount of goals an obvious winner was staring at me. So a big congrats goes out to @tonyottley for making the correct picks. You have won the following:

You can contact me at sportcardcollectors@hotmail.com with your information or since you have Twitter, you can contact The Pack Gambler there.

Congrats again to our winner and a BIG THANKS goes out to The Pack Gambler for sponsoring this contest. If you haven't LIKED or FOLLOWED them on Twitter and Facebook yet, please do so and tell them thanks while you are there.

And if you didn't win, the new monthly contest starts today and when that ends, it's followed by another exciting Pack Gambler contest. We are giving stuff away every week! Join in on the fun!

NPN Of The Week

With the lack of me buying a lot of newer products, I haven't had many NPN addresses to share in weeks. So in return this Sunday, I wanted to show off an NPN I just got in from Upper Deck. By far, they are the easiest NPN of them all. Just go online to their website that you can locate HERE.

Let me know your thoughts on this NPN mail day from Upper Deck and what the best one you have ever received from them.

MONTHLY CONTEST RULES AND INFO

I hope all of you enjoyed playing in April's Contest and congrats again to our winners. For the month of May til the October there will be some changes made to the monthly contests. For one, there was a ton of inconsistency on the amount of people that would enter per day. Some days there would be 12 other days there would be 20. There were also some who entered one day and never came back again. I like contests with lots of competition. So to fix this problem I have found a new simpler way to play the monthly contest game.

Before I tell you how to play, I first want to say thanks to Jammin JDcards and BCW Supplies for providing prizes for the monthly contests Without them, there would be no contests.

Now onto how to play:
  • There will be one game a week to pick the winner, total score, and another stat of from that game.
  • The games will consist of many sports including MLB, NBA, NFL, NASCAR, WNBA, and so on. You just will never know
  • Each game that is chosen will be a Sunday Night game. You will have one week to get your ONE entry in. Do not be late on your entry or it will not count!
  • All entries will be hidden for the fun of the game and the challenge. But will be revealed the following day when a winner is announced.
  • There will be ONE WINNER per week for THREE WEEKS. The winners will be thrown into a WINNERS POT and will be randomed for the prize of their choice starting with the person whose name is at the top of the list
  • Once you have won for the month, you CANNOT win again that same month. We are looking for more winners here.
  • BIG NEWS: Everyone who won from April-September, including the Top 3 in April, will be battling it out for a GRAND PRIZE from BCW Supplies in October along with some break spots from Jammin JDcards as well. If there are same winners from different months, meaning if Sport Card Collectors won in May and August, they will only get in for one of the months and then we will take names of those who entered the monthly contests on a consistent basis and random the names and fill in those spots of same winners. So make sure you always enter!
  • There should be 18 winners entering for the October Contest. However, if there is good turnout on a weekly basis, I may, actually I will, random off a two more Wild Card spots into the challenge for the Grand Prize contest for those who enter regularly. Making 20 possible spots open for the Grand Prize month. Three spots have already been claimed from April.
There are only two rules:
  • This contest is open to U.S. Residents ONLY....Sorry!
  • HAVE FUN and win great prizes!
Now onto the winnings. I usually I have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize. But not this time. I think all of these prizes are pretty equal and will allow the winner to choose which prize they want. After that, the second place winner picks their prize and the third place winner gets the remaining prize. The prize places will be decided by the monthly randoming. Then prizes can be chosen.

The prizes for the MONTHLY CONTESTS are as follows:
  • BCW Supplies:
    May, variety of toploaders
    June, box magnetics
    July,  variety of toploaders
Aug., box of 9pocket pages and an album
    Sept. variety of toploaders
    Oct., Grand Prize TBD
  • Monthly: A spot into a Basketball break from Jammin JDcards (TBD by Jammin JDcards)
  • Monthly: A spot into a Football break from Jammin JDcards (TBD by Jammin JDcards)
If you have any questions on the Monthly Contest, feel free to ask those below.

That 90's Card: 1996-1997 Topps 50th Silver Parallel Derrick McKey

Retail Break Em: Fairfield Company Baseball Box

I have seen many people breaking these all across the internet. Blogs, sites, Twitter, etc. I have seen the good and the bad that can come from these. But, I look at something that offers me 20 packs, 1 guaranteed hit for $20 and I can't turn away from that. Who Can? So I broke one of the football ones and one of the baseball ones so tame my curiosity.

This specific post is about the baseball box, I will show the football results next week. How did this one go, well, you will have to see for yourself as you check out the gallery!

These were the packs within. Was pleasantly surprised to find a hobby pack of Topps Heritage:

This was the guaranteed "hit" of the box:

And these were the best cards I got from the packs:

Overall, not bad for what I paid for. If I was to go back and buy another one, this is the one I would buy. I feel like the baseball has more variety and a lot more to offer in value unlike the football one but I will leave that judgement up to you when you see the football break. The pleasant surprise of a hobby pack goes a long ways as well. The hit I got in this box was much better than the football one I got as well. That is not saying much. But I have seen some boxes that have come with much better hits which is what tempted me to breaking these in the first place.

Let me know your thoughts and if you tried breaking one of these and how you did.
