REVIEW:2019-2020 Topps NHL Sticker Collection

If you ever thought you would never be able to hold a Topps hockey item again, well, you were wrong.

Coming to your local box stores and possibly Dollar Trees is Topps NHL Sticker Collections.

The license was once held by Panini for doing the stickers but now it's back in Topps hands. Also keep in mind that Upper Deck still holds the NHL card license.

First, let's take a closer look at the album

Whoa, what? Free stickers?? Panini did away with that in the last few of their albums I saw. Who doesn't like a jump start freebie in the album.

 Each team has plenty of skaters and some special edition ones as well. More than I remember in the past. Which is good as it should cover many of the key players on the team or close to it.

 

There are even pages for special moments of the season and players

 

Then comes...what is this...more free stickers?! There are 10, yes, 10 freebies in all. Some of which are limited edition just to the album themselves.

Overall, this sticker album will hold 630 stickers. That's one big set. Remember when we used to have sets that size for cards?! Those were the days.

Now let's check out a pack of stickers.

Each pack, which is mini sized like Topps Mini cards that used to be released comes with five stickers per pack. Boxes come with 50 packs and it will take more than one to complete the entire book. Boxes of stickers are about $50.

Overall, I like the book layout, design is nice and I am always loving some shiny. These are just simply fun collectibles that would make any hockey fan big or small. Also make great Christmas gifts and teachers kids the basics of collecting.

Best NPN Cardboard I Have Ever Gotten

A few weeks ago, Upper Deck must have sent out their NPN mail days as I saw them strewn throughout Twitter.

I have always been a big Upper Deck supporter and definitely a big fan of their NPN program which is done all online unlike other companies where you must mail it in. Another positive about Upper Deck's NPN program is they just don't send out complete junk or plain inserts, they will sometimes surprise you.

I have had fairly good success in the past with Upper Deck NPN's but nothing like today's mail day.

Unlike the past where Upper Deck would send products separately, it appears they doubled up on my for one package. I wasn't even expecting anything as I hadn't been entering or remembering to do it every time like I used to.

But, I must have hit some luck because they sent pure gold.

And then under it....

Holy Smokes! Ray Bourque auto!!!! And it's on card with a piece of his stick and numbered to 27. Whoa!

I was really blown away. I am also happy that it was a player I can relate to. Ray is the one and only athlete I have ever met and got an in-person autograph of. So this card is my first certified auto from a company of him. I don't plan on moving it at all. Great PC piece.

Now if only I can land an autograph card of Wayne Gretzky.....some day.

Box Of Goodies,Grady M Mail Day Part 1:Random Goodness

Opening up my mail box yesterday and discovering a big box that was mailed by Sport Card Collectors reader and fan, Grady M, I knew my day was going to be made. As you have seen in the past, he bombs me with tons of great inserts covering all sports and my teams/players. Such a generous guy and collector and someone I am very blessed to have met on here. We have been exchanging packages for about a year now.

I posted yesterday that I wasn't going to post these til next week, but I am so far behind on blog posts I am going to plug these in when I can instead. Today was a slow day on here so it sounds like a great time to share this.

Now onto part 1 which consists of many sports.

Up first, a HUGE stack of NY Ranger base cards from UD Series 1 and Prizm.

Inserts. Artifacts in the top middle is numbered.

Love these. They may not be the same ones that UD put out in the 90's, but the nostalgic appeal is still there.

A couple more nice cards.

Even found two NEW Griffeys for that PC. I am on the drive to 800!!

NBA inserts and Knicks base.

Even some NASCAR. These made me a bit sad as we haven't had a new release in so long for racing cards (I am not really a racing fan per say, but love the cards especially the memorabilia and inserts) and I am still heartbroken that Press Pass had to close their doors. They put out some great stuff over a long time.

 

A great way to kick off what's to come. There are 6-parts to this mail day so stay tuned as I will squeeze them all in at some point in the next two weeks!

Grady Strikes Again! Mail Day Part 4:BEST OF THE REST!

Here were some odds and ends. These didn't have enough of one or the other to warrant a seperate post on so I combined them into one. There are a few cards missing such as Star Wars and a Wrestling one, but that's because the pictures got deleted by mistake. But wanted to at least take note on those.

License Roulette Results: NHL

With the License Roulette now in the books, we thought it would be time to show off the results from each sport that you guys voted for. The voting process was over a two week period with most sports receiving up to 50+ votes each. Thanks to everyone who took a few seconds out to vote.

This just shows that people are happy with the two licensed companies that are already doing NHL and that they don't want anyone else to do it. It was nice to see how close this race was compared to the others in the License Roulette. That's why we think people are happy where the future of the NHL cards are going.

License Roulette Week!

Well, we are finally going to reveal who YOU GUYS voted for in our License Roulette. Yup, did you bet on the company that you wanted to win the License but the ball landed somewhere different. This week will tell you just that.

We also had some great comments from voters as well. They made some great points. Why just have one company with licenses, why not allow all three to dabble into them but cut down on products.

Andrew said "Honestly I think it would be best if the top 3 all had licenses for all products and were limited to 5 products per sport. That way you don't have over production and real competition. You could have 1 low end, three medium and one high end product per sport."

And then Kent followed that one with:  "I agree with Andrew. Way too many products by the companies that do have licenses...and even those that do not. I am a team collector and with all the parallels my collection will never be complete. I feel the need to limit those, too."

Do you guys agree with these comments? Should all companies be allowed a shot at pro licenses and cut down on the amount of products they put out? Or do you like where the hobby is at? Let us hear your thoughts too.

We hear many people all of the time say, "man I wished so and so still had the MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, NCAA license". So we thought it would be fun to actually take a vote to see these results. Let's see who you want to have each license in a fun game of License Roulette.

Upper Deck NPN Mail Day

Received this in the other day. Another Upper Deck NPN (no purchase necessary) Mail Day. I have always liked their NPN program since its online so you don't have to mail anything out or have to spend money on stamps to participate. Not to mention you get some great cards as well.

Upper Deck Brings Excitement To The Double Rookie Class

I sometimes scour different blogs, Twitter, or Facebook to find things that stand out to me or makes me think about a topic that I may not have discussed yet or in awhile. I use this strategy to sometime break writers block. As I scoured, I found this article that was re-tweeted by Upper Deck from another blog on Twitter and it got me thinking that I haven't talked hockey cards in awhile:

So I thought what better time than the Stanley Cup playoffs and an upcoming hockey card season with twice the rookies. 

So far Panini has been quite on this front on next years products so far with the double rookie class as I think their main focus at this point finishing up the rest of their 2012 card releases, but from what I have witnessed this week so far, Upper Deck on the other hand is really bringing the excitement. Other than them posting videos all over Twitter from themselves and others and re-tweeting other peoples blog posts or site posts,  I think I have also seen about 3 articles from them on their own personal blog of recently including this one just posted the other day:

The excitement is so high for Upper Deck for next year’s double rookie NHL class I keep waiting for an 80's type video with fireworks and smoke then out of the cloud of smoke appears Upper Deck’s marketing man Chris Carlin showing off a Double Rookie Class tattoo that looks like this:

So with all of this Upper Deck excitement got me to thinking...how excited am I about the upcoming double rookie class season? I would say I am excited. Though, I must admit, not as excited as I was about the double NBA class since I collect basketball a little more than hockey. But this hobby is built on rookie cards and next season's hockey card releases gives us twice the chance to get them and I might be right there trying to score some.

When it comes to hockey, I don't  buy big time. Usually base brands like Score and Upper Deck is where I sit on a yearly basis. I like those products, especially Upper Deck since the Young Guns are always the hottest rookies out on the market, cause they are built around rookies and there is a ton of rookies in the products to find. Not to mention they are cost efficient usually running between $.99-$3.99 a pack.

Even though I am not into hockey as much as I once was, like I posted above, I do love rookie cards from any sport and if I can get them double time, I might buy into this excitement that Upper Deck is bringing for next year. And I would say that it is a great time to star collecting hockey cards if you haven't yet. And it to me sounds like from this excitement, that Upper Deck is a great place to start.

Some of the things in the articles above Upper Deck is promising about their 2013-2014 products is less redemptions and more autograph content in packs from rookies who skated this year. They also are planning on some cards with Team Canada in their Olympic year. Not to mention, they also point out their exclusive autograph deals with the Great One Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr. And then there is the list of rookies who will most likely find themselves on cardboard next year Yakupov (I know I am going to definitely look for this guy), Huberdeau,Seth Jones, Gallagher, Grigorenko, Granlund, Hamilton, MacKinnon, Galchenyu to name a few.

I think what Upper Deck is doing with their NHL cards is a good thing for the hobby. Why not bring the excitement early?  Why not cause a ruckus to catch our attention? Why not try to expand the hobby to get more hockey card collectors?  Why not get this blogger to finally write about hockey cards for the first time in awhile? Seems they have a lot going for their upcoming products and I would say out of all of the years that its probably a great time to start collecting hockey cards or start collecting them again. Less redemptions, more rookies, can't go wrong.

Maybe with a double rookie card class next year it will spark me to do more articles on hockey cards. We will have to see. But for now we have got to ask, how excited are you about next seasons Double Rookie Class? Are you Upper Deck excited?
