THIS vs THAT Battle 2

Time for Part 2! In Part 1, Stadium Club was dominant and collectors could not turn away from its photography. So this week, I decided to pin that card against a newer Topps base card to see where it stands. Will Stadium Club up it's win streak to two? Will they fall? Who will win is ALL UP TO YOU!!

So here is the lowdown on this NEW fun card game!

I thought it would be fun to do a BATTLE OF THE..... CAAAAAAAAARDS (picture a deep voice and drawn out ending). If any of you watch SportsCenter, you would know they have a segment called the Best Of The Best where they pin two of the best plays against one another. One play may have been from previous days in a row against a new one. The goal is to narrow down the best. Well, I want to do a Best Of The Best card version but mine is called This vs That.

Here is how this is going to work.

1. I will put a post up such as this one and you will have one week to vote on one card or the other by telling me in comments which one you like more. 
2. There will be one card from the 90's, one card from the 2000's. 
3. There will be a variety of sports versing one another. This contest isn't to pin sport vs sport. 
4. Voting is based upon the OVERALL card and looking at things such as design, creativity, photography and eye appeal. Don't judge a card because it's an autograph or jersey card vs a base card. This "contest" is to see which card is OVERALL better and not just because it's signed or has someone's memorabilia. Same goes for the inserts vs the base. I will try my best to make them the fairest I see possible.
5. After a week of voting, the card with the most votes moves on to face another card. 
6. A card that loses cannot be brought back nor can its design.Example is if I use the 1993-1994 Stadium Club hockey card design, I cannot use the 1994 Stadium Club football card design later on as they are most likely the same thing. The designs on the cards must be different.
7. I will keep a tally on which cards have won and how many times they have won at the top of the next weeks post.

I am not sure when I will end the overall "contest", maybe by the end of the year, let's see how many voters show up first. But, the goal is to see which card ends up being the best and which era gets more wins.

Breakin Wax: 1993-1994 Fleer Ultra Basketball Series 2 Pack Break

As I have stated before, Fleer Ultra was always a hit with me. They had creative inserts, nice base card photography and tough sought out parallels. This was one product that had a little bit of everything and was created the right way

Now onto this newest episode of Breakin Wax.

In every pack of 1993-1994 Fleer Ultra basketball cards is 14 cards. You will find an insert one-per-pack. Some of the inserts were tougher to find than others.

Great base card design and photography

It appears that Frank Johnson really wants that rebound. It's photography like this that brings you closer to the game. We need more of this.

My rookies from the pack. I remember watching Lindsay Hunter and Gheorghe Muresann play. I was especially a fan of Hunters. Of course the fun thing about Muresann's card is the Bullet's uniform. You know, the team in Washington before the Wizards but had to change their name due to the graphic name of Bullets.

 USA Basketball subset card. Great design here as well.

And my insert pull from the pack. Can't go wrong with a guy like Scottie Pippen who was a big part of that Bulls dominance of the 90's.  Nice looking insert too.

Overall, great break. Nice insert, a couple decent rookies and action photography. I wished more of my breaks felt this way.

90's Flashback:1993-1994 Stadium Club 1st Day Issue Brian Leetch

90's inserts. Some are bold and colorful, some are as simple as a small stamp. In any form, they are always fun to pull.

Here is one that I pulled from a pack lot at a yard sale I went to three years ago. It not only serves its purpose as a 90's PC item, but as a Rangers one as well.
 

 

Stadium Club 1st Issues were not easy pulls back in the day usually falling at a rate of one-per-box. Some of the better players such as Wayne Gretzky hold a premium price even in today's market and are tough to find.

I not only like the card for the two reasons above, but you have also got to appreciate the great crystal-clear photography as well.

That 90's Card: 1993-1994 Topps Stadium Club John Williams

One of the nicer photographed set of the 90's was Topps Stadium Club. Topps did an amazing job capturing moments during games for MLB, NFL and this one for the NBA. The product also used a very clean design with its borderless photography.

I chose this card today, I am sure it's one of many Stadium Club ones I will post, because it's from my Knicks PC. The photograph used on it is pretty cool as well because it made me think back to the Knicks/Bulls rival days when Jordan would come to the Garden and always found a way to win. Funny thing is I couldn't stand MJ in the 90's because of that, but now I am a fan.

90's Rip Party: 1993-1994 Skybox Premium Basketball 1 Pack Break

Once again, I am ripping some basketball in another edition of 90's Rip Party. Today's selection, 1993-1994 Skybox Premium!

In 1993-1994 Skybox Premium basketball there was 12 cards per pack. The design was decent. A rectangle box ran down the left side of the card with player name, position and team logo. There was no border and some decent photography. There were some fun inserts to collect as well.

And nothing gets your heart revved up more than pulling any form of MJ in a pack. T

Overall, not a bad break especially when there is an MJ sighting. The main thing I like about these is the photography. The Jordan alone makes you feel as if you are court-side watching him make this shot that is more than likely a game winner. I didn't find any inserts this time, but I would probably go back and give another a try.

90's Rip Party: 1993-1994 Fleer Basketball Series 1 1 Pack Break

Everyone loves to open wax packs or is that just me? Well, here is a fun one for ya! I recently broke a pack of 1993-1994 Fleer basketball and was pretty excited with the results. There was an MJ sighting and I pulled an insert. For a 90's basketball break, this is exactly what you are looking for!

The design of Fleer '93-94 is pretty good. A think border, brightly colored names (I mean what wasn't brightly colored in the 90's?) and some great action shots.

Now onto the insert pull of a Clyde Drexler Career Highlights card that fell 1:6 packs. There were much tougher signed versions of these as well that fell 1:7000 packs.

Overall, a pretty good break. I thought it was interesting to see that Fleer included a chance at pulling a Clyde Drexler auto. I had no idea about this til after opening this pack up. You could have also mailed in a index card for NPN for one of those. That's crazy! I know the NPN expired back in 1994, but I wonder what would happen if I attempted to send one now....
