Breakin' Wax:1998 UD3 Football Pack

Nothing is better than breaking some memories.

On one of my $25 A Week challenges, I told you about a couple of packs of 1998 UD3 football I got for cheap that I would be breaking a pack of later on, well, it's time to break it open. Remember, I am only opening one of these packs, not both. I plan on keeping the other sealed for fun.

UD3 returns for it's second season after a successful 1997 in which I bought a ton of. I don't remember how much 1998 I was able to find but I did break some.

A look at the overall base set is pretty deep. The 270 card base set is broken down into so many subsets,
Future Shock-Embossed (1-30), Next Wave-Embossed (31-60), Upper Realm-Embossed (61-90), Future Shock-Light F/X (91-120), Next Wave-Light F/X (121-150), Upper Realm-Light F/X (151-180), Future Shock-Rainbow (181-210), Next Wave-Rainbow (211-240), and Upper Realm-Rainbow (241-270)

Obviously being 1998, my hope was to land Randy Moss or Peyton Manning. I knew my odds were against me, but you never know.
The seller actually even tossed in one of the base cards which is actually the toughest pull at 1:125 odds. This is an Upper Realm embossed.

Now time to bust the pack.
Inside this is what you find. Cards are protected by two pieces of cardboard.

John Elway Upper Realm Light FX 1:6 packs.

Future Shock rainbow, great looking card up close, only falls 1:1.3 packs. Too bad it wasn't the rookies I had hoped for but solid card to have regardless just because of design.

Next Wave embossed falls 1:4 packs.

Keep in mind, these are just base cards at different levels of severity. I think it's a fun concept and makes it challenging to build a base set which is what a set collector like myself enjoys. Also helps give it added value so you want to chase it.

There are also multiple levels of die cut parallels and since I didn't pull any, I am not even going to touch that project.

Let's see how long I can hold onto the second pack without opening it. Because who knows what treasure could be hiding in there....

$25 A Week Challenge Week 15:Mix Of Things

This is the first $25 A Week Challenge in some time as I had to put a delay on this segment. With my wife's gifts bought and myself finally focused on finishing up some projects, I didn't really have time or patience to dilly dally into other stuff instead.

I am not sure how often posts from this series will appear anymore due to the fact I am focused on accomplishing some things, but they will appear whenever I have them ready to.

So for today, this is an undercut version of the segment as I didn't come close to spending $25 but at least there is some cool stuff to see.
Like this Daniel Jones Rookie Wave. I really loved the design on this so I had to make sure I locked up a Jones. Especially since it was only $1.26 and .99

Okay, so I loved these Holiday Match Up cards. I landed the Kerry Collins one awhile back and since then always on the lookout for more. When I saw these three up for auction for $1, I jumped and was the ONLY BIDDER. I won all three for $1 plus .75 shipping. That's crazy.

While I was bidding away on RJ Barrett cards and lots, I found this lot that had Barrett in it along with some other Knicks. Price, well, $3.99 plus $3.49 shipping. I couldn't say no.
Ewing, one of my favorite Knicks all time green Prizm

Dennis Smith Jr Optic rookie

Ewing Jersey card!! Love it!

And this guy lol.

Pretty solid lot overall. I already showed the Barretts in my RJ posts.

Up next and final, 2 1998 UD3 packs. I will be busting one of these two packs to show off the contents on here at some point.
Grabbed these two packs with a shot at getting a Peyton Manning for $3 plus $3.99 shipping.

This weeks grand total, $18.47. So under the $25 mark but some great pickups.

So now I pass this onto you, what would have you spent $25 on this week.

1997 UD3 Baseball Box Break Overall Thoughts+Recap

In what was a three-week on the edge of your seat pack by pack break, 1997 UD3 baseball came to an end.

So what was my thoughts on it. Read on!

The box started out on fire in the first pack finding both Jeter and the featured box guy in the first pack. My man, Junior.

There were no big pulls such as no autographs or Marquee Attractions, but I did pull the inserts that were expected in the box that fell at 1:11. Not bad players, just not the Jeter I was hoping for.

In the end, day by day, you guys could tell I was chasing the set. Well, I can sadly say, I didn't accomplish that feat. Todd "bleepin" Greene didn't show his face. Yes, I was one card short. One. If there had only been one less double and one more Greene I would have had the set. But I am sure it won't be an expensive thing to add to finish my set.

Even though I was a card short on the set and didn't pull anything huge, I did pull two nice inserts, some great players and most important of all, had a ton of fun. If all it took was $25 to do that, I think it was worth it at the end of the day.

So now I pass it onto you guys.

What do you guys think? Was this break worth it? Are you going to miss these posts? Want to see more future segments done like this?

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 24, The Finale

It's the end of the box and we know it. It's the end of the box and we know it..and it is fine! (not really cause I don't have anymore to bust!)

No inserts, no autographs, but a few set needs. I guess that is better than nothing.

After I am done sorting it all out I will leave my overall thoughts on the break in a post and ask for your thoughts as well. Should be next week or two as I am behind sorting a few other things first.

Oh, and I mentioned giving some cards away. I still am. Look for those in a future contest....

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 23

Oy! Was the words out of my mouth for this break. Three doubles!!!! I am still short on my set with only one pack to go! Going to need that one to be a good one to help.

Not a bad pack otherwise...

The finale is tomorrow. Will there be set help? Insert? Autograph? I might bust it today for tomorrow cause I can't wait either....

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 22

With only a few packs left and some set needs that need to be filled, I am hoping for an insert, but also really hoping to at least fill my set in.

Today's pack helped provide three set needs.

The big hurt I am gonna say looks really sharp on here. I think the Sox uni helps too against the wood grain.

Nomahhhhhhh

Pack #23 tomorrow then #24 to finish it up. The end is near....

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 21

Can't believe I am at Pack 21 already. Amazing how fast this went even though it has been three weeks.

Today's pack had a couple more set needs including one for my Yanks PC.

Pack #22 tomorrow. Only a few left!

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 20

Pack 20 gives me three new set needs and some memories.

All I can remember of Mo was that he was the Ortiz of the 90's. Big dude that could hit. Mo delivered a grand slam in the game I went to see Griffey play in. Was a bad ending to a great day.

John was so dominant that my friends would fight in the backyard on who got to be him in our baseball matchups.

And Andruw makes me think back to when my father and I would try to chase down his rookie cards as he was the "it" factor.

Let's see if Pack #21 will be as memorable as this one tomorrow!

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 19

Today kicks off the final few packs of UD3. I  know a lot of you will be sad as this box break comes to an end, but we knew at some point we would get there.

Today's pack provided more set needs.

Once again, great photo placement.

I was always a fan of Larkins.

Tomorrow we break Pack 20. Stay tuned and cross your fingers I find something else.

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 18 INSERT!!!

Yes, you read the headlines right. Another insert! This is my second of the box. Still hoping with packs remaining that something else is still hiding and waiting for me to find.

Up first, a new set add in Hideo Nomo. You gotta love that high leg kick he had.

Darin Erstad. Was it me or did you seem to pull him in every pack back then????? At least now I was glad to find him as a new set add.

And as I mentioned above, my insert pull. Another Generation Next that fall 1:11 packs. This time it's of the good catcher Jason Kendall that I discussed about a few packs ago.

So in 18 packs, we are on our way towards a set and have pulled two inserts. What remains in the final 6 remains to be seen.

Tomorrow the next bust is coming up!

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 17

Simply put, today's are all doubles.

However, I never mind finding another Jeter.

Let's hope that Pack #18 is more helpful, you will find out tomorrow!

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack #16

Finally, a pack that provides me some more set help. All three of these cards will go towards my set.
Slammin Sammy. I liked him until....well....you know. I think I have repeated that enough during this series.

Jim Thome to me was the ageless wonder. Seems like he continued to hit no matter the team and age.

Jason Kendall was one of the leagues better catchers during his playing time.
Another pack on it's way tomorrow. We are closing in on the end.

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 15

Another day, another silver pack cracked.

Today's pack featured cards toward my set and is made up of players I considered semi-stars.

Juan-Gone had some decent seasons and he also had some pretty bad ones.

Bernie is one of the Yankee greats in my opinion. He had a never give up approach and was apart of those great Yankee teams of the 90's. Seems so long ago when the Yankees ruled baseball.

Most games are so hard to watch now.

Rey Ordonez was a decent player and was a much better fielder than hitter. Especially when it came to dropping down bunts.

Pack #16 will be posted tomorrow. Hope to see ya back!

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 14

After today we will officially be down to 10, yes, 10 packs. There still has to be at least one insert hiding in there, but I am hoping for more.

Today's pack was a good mix of players all new towards my set needs.

I like this Hundley card. Shows him both running and hitting. Great stuff.

Raul's stance tells us he is ready to club the ball....or someone.

This guy never quite panned out. All of those rookie cards sat in binders just looking at me.
Pack #15 being posted tomorrow so stay tuned!
