Hobby Break 'Em: 2013 Topps Magic Football Hobby Box

For the first time, I tried out SCC Trading Cards for a purchase. I usually have always bought my hobby stuff from dacardworld but have had a few issues with them recently so I wanted to give someone else a try.

The prices at SCC are very reasonable and they have free shipping on all orders over $99. The first box I opened from there was a box of 2013 Topps Magic. Yes, I know the rookie class is weak, but how can you go wrong with a hobby box at $38 that gives you three autographs in which one could be a top tiered veteran such as Drew Brees.

In every box of Topps Magic football, you get 24 packs with 8 cards per pack. Most boxes right now are under $40 and will land you three autographs.

Here is what the base cards look like. They have a throwback feel to them and I am not just talking the way the pictures are done. The base cards themselves feel like they are printed on older card stock making for a nostalgic type of product.

Aerial Attack inserts. I think the feel and look of these fit right in with a product like this.

Same goes for the Ground and Pound inserts....

Here is a couple of the '48 Magic which contains a mixture of 25 of the biggest veteran, retired and rookie players on the nostalgic '48 Magic design. I really like these. I just don't really have anyway to store them so I stick them in full size sheet pages.

This is probably one of my favorite inserts that Topps has done in awhile. These are photos taken from the Rookie Premier and Topps framed them to give them a 3D/Shadowbox appeal.

Time for some mini action! You find one of these per pack along with many parallels.

Overall, not the best break in the world. But, that is my kinda luck. I failed to mention this earlier but any base card that is over 220 in the set is an Sp. I don't know how many I got in this box but that should help add a little bit more value. I believe there are Sp's for the mini's as well.

Review: Topps Magic Football 2012 Hobby Box

 I know we already reviewed the blaster version. but upon getting the hobby version as an early birthday present I said to myself...why not review it that way as well. So here it is...

 

Box Break Down:

• 24 Packs Per Box, 8 Cards Per Pack
• (3) Autograph Cards Per Box!
• (1) Black Bordered Mini Parallel Per Box!
• $80 a box (got mine on sale for under $70 from dacardworld)

BASE CARDS: Topps sometimes colorful cartoonish looking base card designs don't usually work. They used it in both high end and low end products. I prefer real photography and action shots. But in this case for this kind of product its attractive. The base design in general is. With the lack of gloss as well these cards would only look good done this way.

INSERTS: Other than anything in chrome style setting, minis are also a favorite of mine. They fall almost one per pack. There are also mini black bordered versions fall one per box. The other mini mini's (48 Magic) as we will call them are unique as well and seem to fall 2 per box.  We also pulled a Pigskin Mini numbered Parallel of Bobby Rainey.  The other inserts were really lacking in design.They were extremely lame and very unexciting to pull. They remind of something you would use as a subset and not an insert. However, Rookie Enchantments that are pretty impressive cards. The photo has a purple frame around it. The picture is embedded. Very attractive card and this picture does not do it justice.

AUTOGRAPHS: Sorry for the pics I don't know why the rest came out so great but the autos didn't, but its probably best they look like this anyways. Two Cleveland Browns (Colt McCoy and Travis Benjamin) and one Raider (Criner) makes this a dark (pun very much intended)...ugly break. The cards still look nice and the fact all are sticker autos didn't bother me. But come on, wheres the value????

JERSEY/PATCH CARDS:Didn't pull any but heard they are very nice looking. And some include coins.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: First off, value wasn't here. 3 bad autos. No rookie cards of RG3, Luck or Russell Wilson or anyone else for that matter other than the one Doug Martin. Value for what you pay to what you get...not good at all. Cards still look nice and we all know its a gamble to buy a box...but come on..at least put good rookie cards in if the autos are bad??!!Tried to talk to Topps about it, but no response. Not impressed.

Review: Topps Magic Football 2012 Blaster Box

After seeing many hits from this product, including retail, I knew I had to get my hands onto some. The only way I could get it was in blaster form.

Here are my thoughts.....

They were extremely lame and very unexciting to pull. They remind of something you would use as a subset and not an insert. However, when pulling the Blackmon Rookie Enchantment that was a pretty impressive card. The photo has a purple frame around it. The picture is embedded. Very attractive card and this picture does not do it justice.

AUTOGRAPHS: N/A though the odds are in your favor at 1:25

JERSEY/PATCH CARDS:N/A

OVERALL THOUGHTS: With odds of pulling an auto at a rate of 1:25, minis, rookie cards, for the $20 its worth the risk. I would also assume the rack packs for $10 would also be worth the price as well. Other than the lack of design on the inserts, very well done product by Topps.
