Uniform Versus:NY Jets

The Jets, the other New York team as us Giants fans call them, are today's featured Versus team. For me, this is an easy choice. But, for you guys or you Jets fans, it may not be.

When it comes to their nickname, Gang Green, I think these uniforms which to me is the definition of Jets and Green. The color scheme and even the helmet with the word Jets with an actual Jet embedded in it says NY Jets to me. It especially said it with their home uniforms with the straight green jerseys and the white pants with green stripes down the side. These uniforms and helmets were ran from 1990-1997 before they

 

switched to these in 1998. Which to me doesn't say Gang Green in any way. Yeah, they are tributes to the helmets of the 60's and 70's but doesn't do the team enough justice. Too much white to me.

 

When it comes to cardboard however, I feel they both look okay on cardboard. But, I also don't really collect the Jets either.

Uniform Versus:Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays

Today's battle involves not only uniform changes, but also involves a small name change.

Let's see the breakdown.

 

From 1998-2007, Tampa Bay's baseball team was known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The name was based on the manta ray. It was a pretty cool logo and name coming from the sunshine state.

 

Then in 2008, the team had a name change to the Rays referring more to the "rays" of sunshine instead. I guess the name change also changed their attitude as they reached the World Series that year and have been contenders for the most part since.

 

When it comes to cardboard, for me, I would rather see the Devil Rays. I think the logo looks better on cardboard and the color scheme as well. The colors for the Rays uniforms are bland and some similar to the KC Royals. I liked the forest green and blue uni's with the colorful Devil Rays written across the front of the jersey. The name was cooler too. Imagine patches from that jersey embedded into cards...yeah, sweet huh??

Alright guys, I pass the question onto you, what do you think, Tampa Bay Rays or Tampa Bay Devil Rays???

Uniform Versus:San Diego Padres

Today's match up was a simple one for me. Some of you may agree, some may not.

The San Diego Padres have a long history of uniform changes. They started out in 1969 with a plain jersey with Padres across it, changed it in 1972 to mustard yellow, 74, 78, 79 (just took out the San Diego part), 80, 85,92 (changed color of jersey and writing), 2001, 2004, and now 2016. Crazy and that's not even counting all of the alternates!!

It was such a long list I had a hard time picking a match up to use for this segment. So what I ended up doing is randomly grabbing two cards from my Padres pile to use today. I could have easily done a Uniform vs vs vs vs vs vs as you see above, but decided two was enough. So I have one from 1994 and one from 2012. 

Up first, the 1994 that they wore from 1992-2000. I think the uniform, despite being basic, is one I mostly associate with the Padres as it's the one saw the most in my prime of watching tons of baseball. So simply put, I would choose this as the winner just because of that. I also like the pinstripes (must be the Yankee fan in me) that were used. Something now they seemed to be completely away from.

It's wasn't that I hated this design as it fits with today's times and it was one they wore for a long time til this year,

But, I just give edge to the one I have seen them in the most.

Since this is a card blog and card segment, when it comes to cardboard for these uniforms, I would say base card wise, that the new jerseys look better, but when it comes to memorabilia, there is no denying that fans including myself would rather see pinstripes and some color on their jersey cards.

Now I gotta pose this question to the readers and Padre fanatics, which of these two jerseys would you choose and the even tougher question, which jersey OVERALL do you prefer?

Uniform Versus:Denver Nuggets

The one thing about the Uniform Versus segment is sometimes you don't always pick the "updated" version as I have done in the past two segments. Sometimes retro is simply better.

When I take a look at these retro Denver Nuggets uniforms, I honestly think, cool and at the same time please wear longer shorts. Not only do these look good on cardboard, but can you imagine the nice swatches they would make on a jersey card? Would almost eliminate a single color jersey pull of them.

These jerseys were their road uniform from 1982/83-1984/85 season. They switched the color to a lighter blue, but, still same design and ran those until the 1992/93 season.

Now we take a look at their current uni's. Kinda bland and down to a single color. It doesn't look awful just basic. I do however like the shorts better as it fits the uniform better.

These have been their home uniforms since the 2008 season.

When taking a look at these in terms of collecting and on cardboard, I have to go retro on this one. I know I chose one home vs one away, but even still, the opposite version of the retro in white still looks better than the solid light blue of the current. Either way, retro wins today for me.

Uniform Versus:Florida/Miami Marlins

I have always had a soft spot for the Marlins. I don't know what it is about them. Maybe it's because I like newer franchises in sports or maybe it's having grown up in the 90's but whatever the reason, I find myself rooting them on in the National League. One of the greatest things I will always remember about the Marlins was their first World Series win over the Indians in 1997. I do however like to ignore their 2003 victory over my Yanks.

So today, I wanted to take a look at their uniform change that took place in the fall of 2011. Yes, they are no longer the Florida Marlins as they are now the Miami Marlins, but it's still the same franchise.

Here is the uniform they played with from 1993-2011. Not too shabby and the logo wasn't the worst...

 

I will have to say the Miami change brought the uniform more to life in my opinion. The logo is a huge upgrade and full of color. The black, red-orange, yellow, blue, white combo of their uniforms stand out much more than the black, white, and teal. I believe when these first hit the market for customers to buy, they were a huge hit.

Comparing the two cards I posted, I think the new uni's look a bit nicer on cardboard. But, since I had a soft spot already for the Marlins, the change doesn't affect my collecting too much. I do think the Miami colors make better jersey/patch cards but I am fine either way in terms of chasing relics.

Uniform Versus:Tampa Bay Buccaneers

In this NEW segment, I want to take a glance at a teams uniform when they change it and it's impact on cardboard. Some make a difference, some do not. Some team collectors have a preference, some do not. But I think a change of color/theme/design can sometimes either make or break a piece of cardboard that I collect or hold onto.

In today's versus battle, I want to take a look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniform change.

Let's take a look at their uniform on cardboard back in 1995. On this type of card, the uniform isn't too bad because of the design. But, on most cardboard, there is just something about that creamscicle color that just didn't do it for me.

However, when they changed their uniform in 1997, I was impatiently waiting to find the first cardboard with it. My first card addition of their new uniform was a rookie card of Warrick Dunn from 1997 Topps Gallery that I even still have today! 

The change of their uniform was such a turnaround from what they once were, that it started to draw me towards some of their cardboard. The logo is spectacular. The red and pewter blend perfectly together in harmony as you can see on this Vincent Jackson from 2013 Topps Magic, looks like magic.

 

Now I am not a Buc's fan as I bleed Giants blue, but when it comes to cardboard, I don't mind picking myself up a nice looking Buccaneers card here and there. Some of their memorabilia cards are some of the best on the market.
