Wrappers Of Collecting Past:1997 Fleer Football Retail Pack

As I move along with new posts this May and now marking these 26 straight days with a post, most were pre-written drafts and just needed to be published, I wanted to re-visit some of my past segments and give them one last goodbye on this blog.

The goal this month was not only to put up some new posts to test how this blog can fair still, but it was to also bring back some memories and also maybe give me some motivation and ideas to write on Cards Over Coffee which will/has become my main blog now.

I also really want to hit 3 million views before the month ends so I was hoping using up some old pre-written drafts from all three blogs it would get me there.

So, another segment I wanted to say goodbye to was one I really had to dig back because hasn't been posted in almost 7 years. Most of you will not remember this one.

Here is Wrappers Of Collecting Past.

 

This segment basically showed off what wrappers looked like from my past. This one is 1997 Fleer football retail which I ripped plenty of in multiple sports in those days.

The cards were the ones without gloss but had amazing photos. Picture a rough feeling Stadium Club card.

I do like the design on the wrapper as well, very attention grabbing.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:1996 Collectors Choice Baseball Series 2

If this wrapper does not scream the 90's at you or doesn't make you think about Saved By The Bell at least, you were born in the 2000's.

At least in my opinion.

 

I remember busting this stuff because it was not only cheap, but I was chasing down my Griffey needs. I also liked chasing down the Cal Ripken Jr Collection insert cards.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:2000 Upper Deck Pros And Prosepects

I don't have many memories of busting Pros and Prospects, especially this early, but I did bust it once in 2002 in retail form from Walmart and pulled the Prince Fielder XRC auto at the time. So that was a pretty big pull for $20.

But, never busted any 2000.

 

I do have the set however as this wrapper came along with the set I bought off a yard sale for $1. The sets normally sell under $10 so it wasn't much of a steal but it did help add a Griffey I needed so that was the most important part.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:2012-2013 Fleer Retro Hockey

Was there any better revival than Upper Deck's Fleer one? I really can't think of one.

Fleer Retro was released for three sports a few years ago. It was a combination of everyone's favorites from the 90's. Today's wrapper helps brings us back those memories.

 

 

Retro had such products like Ex, Fleer, Flair Showcase, Fleer Metal and a few more all wrapped into one awesome product.

I had bought and busted a couple boxes of football in 2014 that landed me PMG's, Precious Metal Gems, of Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater which at the time featured two of the popular rookie QB's. I also busted a box of hockey above which I didn't fair well with.

The box was actually damaged from one of the online retailers that wouldn't replace it after I sent multiple pics. Luckily, UD stepped in and sent me another box which is something that they really didn't have to do.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:2001 Topps Series 1

Here we are again for another edition of Wrappers Of Collecting past. In this segment you will find wrappers from the late 80s to today. It will cover multiple sport and non sport.

Today we jump back to 2001 to Topps baseball that was celebrating it's 50th anniversary. A golden one that comes with a golden wrapper.

 

 

I don't honestly remember a whole lot about Series 1 as Series 2 was the one you wanted more with the Ichiro rookie lurking, but with it being the golden anniversary and my yearly purchasing of flagship, I was on board to buy either way. I do remember trying to chase down my Yankee needs. I also was hoping to pull an "original" Topps card. Never did though.

The inserts were really sharp to and the relic cards were well designed that year so those were some of my chases as well.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:1997 Fleer Ultra Series 1 Baseball

Fleer Ultra was a standby product of mine in the 90's. Every year it was released regardless the sport, I had to buy.

The 1997 especially was one of my favorites, besides 1995, mainly because of the base card design. It looked spectacular and had some amazing photography. I think I have posted about it before on here in the past multiple times.

Ultra also had some nice looking inserts and in 1997 the addition of newly Platinum Parallels just made the chase even more exciting other than searching for the usual one-per-pack golds. Still to this day I haven't ever pulled a platinum that have less than 200 sets made of each card, but I have added a couple to my PC's over the years. I think people sometimes forget how rare 90's inserts were and even what less than 200 meant back in those days with the market so flooded today from newer less valuable inserts.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:2013 Upper Deck Football

2013 became the first time I started to appreciate NCAA football cards from Upper Deck. Not being a big college football card fan, I mainly strayed from collecting it even though I have always loved what Upper Deck brought to cards.

But, something with 2013 caught my attention and I started to collect and appreciate Upper Deck's college football efforts more even though NFL still took more of my money. It must have been that highly touted football rookie class that turned out to be a flop. But at the time for me, it was all about finding Geno Smith in packs as I thought he was the next big thing.

 

Four years later, I am still wrong about that. At least I got some enjoyment of opening this product and pulled my first ever high-number Sp from a few hobby packs I picked up.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:2002 Topps American Pie Spirit Of America

In my third post of Wrappers Of Collecting Past, I take a look at a product that offered a little bit of everything. Like a big ole piece of American Pie. Funny coincidence...

Today's pack is 2002 Topps American Pie Spirit Of America Baseball Edition. There were 7 cards in every pack from a variety of things. Baseball, politics, celebs, you name it, it was in here. You could also find some unique relic cards of those items including ones from the great Elvis.

 

As for my memories with the product, I actually never opened any. I did however pick up a nice box lot of them at a yard sale. All base, but they were fun and something I am going to showcase in a three-parter in my BASEically Awesome series.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:1994-1995 Topps Series 2 Basketball

1994-1995 Topps Series 2 basketball for me meant a Grant Hill chase. Each series came with 198 cards and Grant Hill to me was the most important rookie of that class so Series 2 was the way I went.

I also was fond of the Spectra Light parallels. Those looked pretty sharp. The base set in general, wasn't great, but the parallels definitely improved it.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past: 2001 Upper Deck Legends Of New York

For some reason over the years, I found myself hoarding empty card wrappers. At first it was to use for crafts (I put them in my binders for decoration), but now I simply think I collect them. Some may have memories attached, some may not. Either way, I thought it would be fun to post em to take you and myself back in this new segment.

I will leave some kind of comment for each. Some may be more than others if there is an attached memory. So I hope you enjoy this trip back in time and this new segment.

Today's pack, 2001 Upper Deck Legends Of New York.

I never actually opened any of this product surprisingly. I did pick up a box of full of singles off a yard sale that came with the wrapper. The cards are focused on legends of New York, no surprise there, and the team names and logos on the card are outlined in felt. That part is cool.
