Leon Sandcastle hits Trading Cards

Leon Sandcastle, AKA Deion Sanders, burst onto the scenes during a Super Bowl XLVII commercial and the popularity of the commerical rose to new heights. Now the fictional Sanders character will be found on upcoming football card releases.

Panini plans of putting Sandcastle into its first two 2013 football card releases of Score and Prestige. For Score, Sandcastle will appear exclusively only in retail packs. He will be featured in the classic 1989 Score design celebrating Score's 25th anniversary. And in June, you can find autographed versions of his rookie cards in Prestige.

Chiefs might have benefited from drafting Sandcastle who can play any position on the field
Not long after Panini released images of their Sandcastle rookie cards, Topps snuck out an image of their own on Twitter that is set to be released in their Bowman 2013 product.

What are your thoughts on card companies going a little extra to bring you a card like this?

  1. I'd rather see a focus on making sure teams are a (a little more) fairly represented, than "cute" SP additions.
This also speaks volumes about what the companies think of the 2013 draft class.
Not that it really matters that much to me, I only really pick up singles when it comes to football cards.

Honestly, I like a little bit of flair in the industry. It shows that the card companies have a sense of humor and want to show it to us. Don't get me wrong I am all for keeping it real and having as many true players represented as posible. However, having an occasional novalty card thrown in every once in a while isn't a bad thing.

  4. I like it. It is something different and while Deion isn't the most relevant nowadays, I think in years to come we'll see this card and go "oh yeah" and have a smile on our face. No harm no foul, just a little bit of fun.
