I Had A Visit From Wax Heaven

The 90's are alive and well over at The Baseball Card Blog and so isn't the life of a Jose Canseco collector.

I have enjoyed being a follower of @TheWaxHeaven and checking out his tweets and posts when they pertain to his passion of the 90's and showing off 90's cards. Because I feel the same way. There may be a time soon where I change things up a bit to something similar on here. Hmm.....

In the meantime, I wanna show off some contest scores I won from @TheWaxHeaven on Twitter. One card I have waited over twenty years for, mostly because I forgot about it.

 

The National Bowman Chrome shiny card. Everyone knows me and shiny cards.

 

WHOA! This is a bonus? Yeah I know right I would have entered the contest just to win this! 90's refractors are the greatest and I will take them all day til the cows come home.

 

A youngin' of a Canseco picture with a nice bat swatch in there.

 

And the beauty I have waited forever to own, a 1998 Bowman Chrome International Refractor of Yankees Orlando Hernandez. It's truly a stunning card! I never even pulled the base rookie back in 1998 as he was one of the hottest prospects back then. Now I need to find myself the other parts of this card, the base and regular refractor. Of course I bet they are much easier and affordable now then they once used to be. Sometimes you have so many chases that you forget about certain cards you always wanted to add and now this one can be taken off from the memory bank when my mind resurfaces that I want to add the other parts to this card.

A Mixed Cube Of Everything

The next cube didn't have a specific sport or even two. It has a mix of everything and every piece was a surprise as with all of these cubes that Wes from Area 40 blog put together. That's what makes these so much fun.

This cube kicks off with a coin and Seattle Slew card so I knew this one would be interesting.

The coin, well, that's a Geoff Bodine from Pinnacle Mint. Very cool product.

Next, a Mark McGwire gold karat card. Something common you found a lot of in the 90's.

Speaking of the 90's, I loved this design by Upper Deck adding in the hologram.Maybe this should be another one on my set list. Of course the more I add, the less I complete.

TMNT! We all know I dig these. Wished I had the full base set.

I have never seen these before or heard of the group The Babys. But, I enjoy the oddball non sport issues so I will binder these.

Jose Canseco when he was skinny. Wonder if he ate too many Drakes and that's what really made him the monster hitter he turned out to be....

My first ever Roger Federer card. I like to have a few cards of each sports stars so this is nice add.

A football relic and autograph of Eric Fisher.

And finally, we end it on an awesome note, Fragments Of The Farm. I love this series in Topps with it's unique swatches.

Opening Up The Next One

Time to reveal what was in the next cube in that huge box of goodness the great Wes passed onto me. Every cube brought a new surprise and every surprise was a nice surprise.

Like a Bo Jackson rookie and a Sammy Sosa Leaf rookie I didn't have.

I really enjoyed finding these oddball minor league cards of stars. Jose Canseco was just one of many I found. You will see the others as this series goes on.

Always nice to add some vintage pieces to my collection since I don't have much in that area.

90's insert love! A Silver Press Proof from Donruss. They don't make em like this anymore!

I always respected Ichiro no matter what uniform he wore. I feel awful he had to spend some time with the Marlins though. That's not an easy place to play if you want to win.

Matt Stairs super cool looking parallel /150. This is one of the coolest cards I have seen in person. This is also one of the few Matt Stairs that I found in these cubes. Come to find out he was on Wes' list to super collect at one point.

Bat relic of Rusty Staub.

Only name I know from this first group is Danny Graves but I will say that all four of these guys have solid signatures.

Just like David Cone. My first autograph of this guy. Of course I don't remember him as a Royal, he will always be a Yankee to me.

And another that will always be a Yankee to me is Paul O'Neill. I always felt he was underappreciated in the league.

That does it for cube two. There were many surprises within and this one provided plenty of PC additions and lots of other fun stuff.

I wonder what Cube 3 will provide for us on here...maybe next week will let us know.

BASEically Awesome Part 3:1997 Fleer Ultra Baseball

Another edition of BASEically Awesome is here and with the MLB season underway, let's take a look at some baseball.

1997 Fleer Ultra not only had a solid design, but it had some very unique and fun photos to create a base card masterpiece.

We take a look at some swings and after swings here,

Dante is trying to get in the pitchers head while Todd is just chilling out.

Johnny is getting his swings in and Ozzie is making a play

I don't know what it is about this card, but I see this one as the iconic card of '97 Ultra. I just feel like I have seen this one be posted many times in Beckett and online.

And we end this gallery with Jose looking for fun.

With a product with 550+ base cards to collect, it would be a worthy set chase especially with the photography done like this. However, the Ortiz rookie base card need wouldn't be cheap, but would add value to the set.

Thoughts on today's BASEically Awesome round are welcomed in comments. I know there were many fans of this product.
