Blog Bat Around:Something I Collect Not Sports

A couple of months ago, Trevor over at Bump and Run Football Card blog held a contest for you to show off something you collect that isn't sports cards or sports memorabilia. You can see what Trevor collects that not cards or memorabilia here, Long Distance from Brazil

As for myself, I have shown off and mentioned many times how I am chasing down pieces of my childhood as I call it.

I have done a good job of knocking down a chunk of the toys I need but still have a road to travel.

I had a couple of these mutation turtles including Leo which I don't have yet. But, these were cheap and worth the pickup.

I had Tommy, green ranger, and never had Zach but hey, cool addition regardless. I need to add Jason, red ranger, at some point to complete my Power Ranger flip heads collection from my youth. I never had the rest of them but would be tempted to get them if they came up cheap.

Mighty Max. I had a few of the playsets but can't remember which ones. So my goal was to grab one that was complete and later on grab the Skull Dungeon one which was the one every Mighty Max fan wanted.

And one of my favorite shows growing up was Darkwing Duck, most of these figures are complete with their accessories except two I think. I am only missing one figure, Steelbeak, from having all 8 figures. So far I have had no success in finding an affordable Steelbeak complete-at least with his tail-but still look everyday.

I have other figures I couldn't dig out at this time such as an autograph White Ranger Tommy, some other TMNT and my Ghostbusters.

I hope this revives this Blog Bat Around for Trevor as I would love to see what you guys collect. I didn't see too many post about this topic and I find it's a fun one.

Childhood Toys:1992 TMNT Mutations

This is a new segment on here that will pop up on occasion when I am able to add a childhood toy I once had.

We kick off this segment with two figures from 1992 when I was at the ripe age of 9.

I was a huge TMNT geek. I didn't miss a single episode of turtles when they came on and I had the theme song down pact. When I used to play with my friends on recess, we knew exactly which turtle we each were.

Blue is my favorite color so I had no choice but to be Leo. Who is also the leader which I was fine with as well.

Despite my love of the turtles, I didn't actually own a lot of the figures because I came from a poor household, but I learned to play with and treasure what I did have. And I also had my friend Brian who had a ton of great stuff I would go over and play with his.

One of the more unique figures I owned was a 1992 TMNT Mutations of Leo. What is a Mutations? Well, it's a figure that you can mutate from a turtle to a ninja turtle or a ninja turtle back to a turtle.

Just give this YouTube video a watch and you will see what I mean.

Since I already had a regular Leo, I treated this figure like it was his evil clone that the Shredder created. They did some great battles however the final battle was a loss as they were sold off when I moved out.

And forgotten.

That's when an eBay likes you attack you on Facebook. I have no idea how or why, but a sponsored ad popped up for these turtles and was definitely focused on me. It made me jump back for a second and realize I had forgotten all about them.

The lot that popped up didn't have Leo and mind you I have never mentioned TMNT on Facebook, which makes it more creepy, but I had to click it and found out it was a two turtle lot ending. So what did I do, obvious, I put in the only bid and won.

The lot included two of the turtles and one accessory.

Mikey that had very minimal play wear.

And Donnie with even less

The one accessory. I believe each turtle came with a weapon and a small vile of "mutagen" which wasn't included with this.

With them in hand, there was really only one thing I should do...

that's right....mutate it.

It took me a few minutes to figure out how to mutate them and even longer to mutate it back but I managed to do so.

I will probably keep these in storage with the rest of my toy adds until I can find a perfect spot to display them all.

What will I add next and when....well...you never know!

The Origins Of A Cardboard Addict:TMNT

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles....Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...Heroes in a Half Shell, Turtle Power!

If you were a fan of TMNT and don't agree that the original movies and cartoon series were the best, well, we can't be friends. Well, we can be, but we will totally disagree on this.

I am not sure what they have done to the once mighty turtles that were mutants today, but it's garbage compared to the shows past. Weird animation, characters that are not themselves and the look of them is definitely not the same.

The show I watched from the late 80's til the mid to late 90's was awesome. Four turtles that fell into mutagen, raised by a rat and taught ninja skills to defend the city against the Shredder and other mutants, oh yeah!

It was my cartoon go to for sure.

That's why when Walmart has seasons of them in their $5 or less DVD bin, I grabbed a few of them. However, I don't have them all.

Along with adding some DVD's, I have also added a few toys along the way as well such as this 1991 City Sewer Leo thanks to Wes who grabbed it for me. The only piece I believe is missing is the pull string that came along with it.

And this complete BeeBop I got form another friend.

 

I do have a few others from the 90's I have showed off before on here, but there are many, many more I want on my want list to go. Such as Baxter Stockmon (has to be complete) who was one of my favorite villains, Krang, All 4 Turtles for one year, among many other of the characters that I had growing up.

I remember acting out TMNT on recess with my friends. I was Leo of course, blue is my favorite color and felt I was the lead of our play time. It was a lot of fun going into battle against the Shredder who would also occasionally be me when I wanted to do two roles. But, most of the time Shredder was the teacher and we had to avoid her. She didn't know she was playing her role however.

In the past few years, I have watched a few episodes of the newer TMNT and the new movies and it is just awful and painful. I am so glad I grew up when I did and had these figures and the shows I was able to watch. Nostalgia is great memories, but also speaks volumes on how great the 80's and 90's were compared to today's times.

Looking For Toys!

They say some of us never grow up and in a way I believe that's true. But, I don't think its because some of us are being childish, it's just that some of us are trying to hold onto our youth a little longer. Especially as we grow a bit older. More importantly, for me at least, it's about the nostalgia and the memories attached to them.

That's what my search for my childhood toys has been about.

When I was in 8th grade, my parents decided it was time for me to ditch my toys so they sold them all to my cousins for a few measly bucks. Those were things I wanted to hold onto especially a few of the pieces that had extra memories attached. My family didn't have a lot of money so when my grandmother, well both of them, saved up and picked up a figure for me for Christmas and birthdays it truly meant something. Or when my uncle actually got me something for my birthday like the Darkwing Duck Megavolt and even though I already had one, I accepted his like a heartwarming gift. Or even my own parents got me one a few times when I didn't get a notebook or candy for Christmas it meant something.

As I turn another year older in a few months, I decided maybe it was time I try to hunt down some of those specific toys and have them. So far I haven't added any of them as I will need some help from trading buddies to do so. Yes, I will trade cards for toys.

Here's a list of specific toys I would be looking for and they don't have to be in packaging, just in decent shape. I also made some notes next to ones that I would like a certain way. Remember these are action figures.

None of these are overly expensive. Usually under $30. And some I would take other figures to such as the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger flip heads and other Darkwing Duck figures.

Hopefully now that I threw these out there I can knock some of these off my want lists. They will also become fun posts later on as well when or if I do.

A Mixed Cube Of Everything

The next cube didn't have a specific sport or even two. It has a mix of everything and every piece was a surprise as with all of these cubes that Wes from Area 40 blog put together. That's what makes these so much fun.

This cube kicks off with a coin and Seattle Slew card so I knew this one would be interesting.

The coin, well, that's a Geoff Bodine from Pinnacle Mint. Very cool product.

Next, a Mark McGwire gold karat card. Something common you found a lot of in the 90's.

Speaking of the 90's, I loved this design by Upper Deck adding in the hologram.Maybe this should be another one on my set list. Of course the more I add, the less I complete.

TMNT! We all know I dig these. Wished I had the full base set.

I have never seen these before or heard of the group The Babys. But, I enjoy the oddball non sport issues so I will binder these.

My first ever Roger Federer card. I like to have a few cards of each sports stars so this is nice add.

And finally, we end it on an awesome note, Fragments Of The Farm. I love this series in Topps with it's unique swatches.

The Origins Of A Cardboard Addict: Heroes In A Half Shell

Long before I started collecting cards, I was a TV geek.

I watched a multitude of shows from the time I got up in the morning such as Rush Limbaugh (can't even explain why a 6 year old was watching him in the morning but he did) followed by Duck Tales before I was off to school. When I got home from school, the TV came on so I could watch Extreme Ghostbusters (wasn't nearly as good as The Real Ghostbusters), and the Disney afternoon block. Then on the weekends, especially Saturday Mornings, don't even talk to me. It was all taken up.

I should also point out before I continue on that I wasn't always watching TV. I spent at least 85% of my childhood outside. I loved being outside and most of the time played pretend as some of the characters from my shows. As I got older, that turned into being my sports heroes but as a child it was reenactment of my favorite shows and characters.

One of my favorites to watch, act out and play with figures of was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I was really into mutants at the time from all of the shows I watched and none were greater than from TMNT.

I loved the two TMNT movies especially the second one with Super Shredder, I like to forget about the third one that didn't interest me at all with it's lame time traveling storylinel. I also enjoyed the TMNT video game for the NES that I used to play at my friend Brian's house as my parents didn't have money to get me a system. I also enjoyed the TMNT cereal, Chef Boyardee pasta shaped turtles, and those Hostess Ninja Turtle pudding pies. They don't make cool food anymore.

But, there was nothing I loved more than the cartoon series that was totally radder than anything else. Cowabunga's all around folks. That's better than high fives.

The cartoon series started in 1987 and lasted until 1996. TMNT was created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird who started a comic series in 1984 that boomed out to so much more. They didn't expect such success but what they created was brilliant and loved by all.

One thing I have been trying to do in 2018 was chase down some pieces of my favorite things growing up. I have added a few The Real Ghostbusters figures, signatures from some comedies I watched, and I added a couple TMNT figures recently as well.

Thanks to my buddy Autograph Blog, I also found out that one of the co-creators of TMNT had a TTM address. So I was all over that. In just over a month, Mr. Peter Laird sent me back two great pieces.

Sketched out a couple of turtles and signed both pieces. So cool!

I also found out that Mr. Laird has a TMNT blog but it doesn't appear he uses it anymore as it had one post in 2018 and that was the first one in two years. I would have followed it for sure if it had more use.

Peter, if you are reading this, thanks man for the piece of childhood history I will treasure forever.

As for the new series of TMNT if you are wondering my thoughts, well, they are terrible. They took the whole heart out of what the Ninja Turtles used to be about and made them goofy. I also wasn't a huge fan of the movie remakes either as animation doesn't even touch what Jim Henson did for the originals. Once again it teaches us the lesson of don't mess with the originals. This goes for everything people. Hollywood, come up with some new ideas or sequels at least for the things you are considering remaking.

Before I close out another riveting The Origins Of A Cardboard Addict, I wanted to mention who my favorite turtle is, it's Leo who I think Peter drew for me above since I mentioned to him my favorite turtle. I always was Leo with my friends when we role played. I am not sure if it was because he was the leader of the group or I just liked blue or his choice of weapons, but whatever it was, Leo was the man. I still need to chase myself down a Leo figure from the 90's.

TMNT Episode 3: League Licensing

Deep in the sewers of NYC, lived the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Most have forgotten about them living there. Some remember and shrug it off. Others still recognize them as heroes that saved their city from the foot-clan.

What have the turtles been doing all of these years in hiding.....

Sorting sports cards.

Does it truly ever end?

Nobody knew of the turtles and their collecting sports cards except for Casey Jones who would bring the turtles packs to open and card supplies to store their items.

Once in awhile the turtles run into a card-related problem that could use some help solving before it got messy.

Today Donatello and Leonardo were comparing cards from today to cards from the 90's. That's when an interesting topic came out.

Leo: Hey Donnie, I was just looking through these cards from the 90's and noticing brands like Score, Pro Line, Upper Deck, Fleer for a variety of sports. I don't believe we have those kind of cards today.

Donnie: Nah brah. All I got is Panini, Panini, Topps, Panini, Panini, Panini, Panini, Topps, Upper Deck.

 

Leo: Wonder what happened.

Donnie: Not sure. It just appears this Panini place bought out everything and left a few scraps behind for Topps and Upper Deck.

Leo: That doesn't give us much variety.

Donnie:No it doesn't. It's quite saddening looking at everything overall on the market right now. A lot of it looks the same. Where's the creativity?

SHREDDER: What do you mean there is no variety and creativity? We have Leaf and Sage cards as well.

 

Shredder threw down some Sage Hit cards in front of his enemies. That Shredder always is stirring things up.

Leo: SHREDDER!!!!

*Leo draws his weapon*

Donnie: Wait Leo. Let's hear what he has to say.

SHREDDER: Look at these. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these cards

Leo:Where are the logos?

SHREDDER: Well, we can't get everything we want. Can we Turtles?

Donnie: Those cards look okay, but without logos they don't interest me that much.

Leo:Me neither. Those 90's cards had all the products with all the logos.

The conversation between the three continued on. The Shredder seemed to think what we had today was great and the unlicensed cards were just as good as licensed ones. Leo and Donnie agreed the 90's with all of that variety was the way to go and that unlicensed cards were ugly. This could be a very long day/night for all of them.

Leo: Check out this totally rad on card autograph Donnie.

Donnie: Does it really matter that you point out it's on-card every time. That's no better than my sticker autograph dude.

Leo: Are you kidding me right now? This is on-card. Ooooooonnnnnnn caaaaaaaarrrddd. This athlete totally touched this card.

Donnie: As if! The dude touched this sticker autograph as well.

Leo: Talk to the hand! There is no way that card is equal with mine.

Soon Mikey and Raph joined in and each of them took sides. Mikey agreed with Leo that on-card autographs are so bangin as opposed to sticker autographs because the athlete had to hold the card in hand. He also liked the fact that on-card autographs can't be messed up by companies sticker autograph messes they have.

Raph on the other hand, was very vocal in his agreement with Donnie and saying that all autograph cards are created equal.

 

The turtles continued to be at a standstill on the topic. 

Leo: I am sorry but I am right on this.

Donnie: Well, we like what we like but there is no way you are right this time. 

So not all was calm in the sewers as the turtles continued to take sides on who was right. What they needed was some guidance, some help from some knowledgeable collectors. That's where you guys come into play.

The Turtles need your help to solve this problem. Let them know in comments which side you choose and why. Hopefully by the time the next episode happens there will be a solution.

Today Donatello and Leonardo were looking at baseball rookies when an argument broke out.

Leo: Man, so glad I collect established players rookie cards. You just never know when a prospects values can drop.

Donnie: Well, I like the upside of having prospects. They could the next future superstars and drive the hobby market! Here, I will trade you this Moncada for your Larkin just to give you a shot of money down the road. Moncada could be the next big thing while Larkin is still stuck where he is.

Leo: NO WAY! Larkin is a Hall Of Famer! Moncada could be done in a year! You even said could be. Could is not definite.

Donnie: Prospecting is awesome! Take my Moncada, you will thank me later. If my calculations are correct, he is due for a big breakout year for the White Sox this year!

Leo: The White Sox hahaha. Larkin will do more than Moncada will ever think of doing. He is here to stay! He will always hold his value and place in my collection. Those prospects are mostly flops!

Donnie: How dare you!

*insert weapon drawn noise*

Usually not the one to talk common sense, Michelangelo decides to step into the conversation to stop the two from the argument.

Mikey: Guys, guys. Slow down. Each their own. Collect what you like dude. If Leo doesn't want to collect prospects, then he doesn't have to. If he likes collecting established players, let him. If you like collecting prospects go ahead Donnie. Both are worth what they are worth in your eyes guys.

First both stopped in shock from the conventional wisdom stowed upon them by Mikey who was usually known for eating the bubble gum out of 80's baseball packs. So the both of them agreed to stick with what they like and not try to force the other to agree with them and shook on it.

 

So for now, Donnie and Leo continued on with the way they have always collected their baseball rookies. And all was happy in the turtles lair til the next cardtrovercy....

So what do you guys do when it comes to baseball rookies? You take the risk and ride with a prospect? Do you focus on already established players and Hall Of Famers? And when you trade, how often do you RISK trading a prospect with a high upside for someone who has already retired but is a Hall Of Famer? Let me know in comments.

Humbled Beginnings

From books to toys to television, nobody or nothing was going to make me interested in sports despite my father's many attempts to turn me that way. I liked what I liked and that was just the way it was going to be.

At least that's what I thought.

However, something drastically and magically changed on a grocery shopping trip we had taken in 1994. We were about to pay in line when my father saw packs of 1994 Topps football sitting on the shelf across from us, remember when cards were sold everywhere, I will never know why other than it must have been the Cardboard Gods, he told me to go grab two packs.

So I grabbed them, we finished paying and off we went to the car. Once we got in there, my father handed me a pack and he kept one for himself as well.

I watched him open his with his mouth, something he still does today, and watched as he looked at the cards telling me about certain players he had found. I, on the other hand without any sports knowledge or knowledge to open a pack, knew better than to open it with my mouth not knowing how many hands had touched those packs before us, so instead I had to fool around with the pack to figure out how to open it and finally did so.

As I rummaged through the cards not really understanding what I was seeing, nothing really caught my eye til I came upon this one....

1994 Topps Football Special Effects Jason Sehorn

I am not sure if it was the glisten on the card or the look on my father's face watching me look at this particular card, but for whatever reason, the card caught my attention and I wanted to open to see if I can find more. Boom magic. It was that simple how the hobby clicked with me. I will never fully understand why we bought the packs and why I was so intrigued by this card or what that day made me want to pursue the hobby. I just did and sometimes in life you just can't explain things.

So for every grocery shopping trip after that, we continued to pick up a pack or two. My collecting interests started to grow and I started to add in some hockey and baseball cards by 1995. My father was thrilled to see my interest in sports start to peak as well.

1995 was when my passion for the hobby and sports really started to explode. My collection started to build and in my spare time when I wasn't sorting cards or watching my favorite shows and cartoons, that certainly wasn't going to change, I would watch football, baseball and basketball. But, more on that later.

As for that Jason Sehorn Special Effects card above, I still have it. When I flip through my NY Giants binder and come across it, the memories of that day float in my mind and it will be a card I will always treasure the most.

So here was my simple humbled sport card hobby beginning. What was yours?

Mixed Within The Turtles Was....

So a couple of days ago I posted a flat rate box I got in my recent trade with @Jake1725 and you got to see the toy part of the trade. Now comes the card part.

Inside of the TMNT box was this Loot Locker box filled with cards. Some are baseball, some are football, some are basketball and even some are non sport. Some are rookies, some are base, some are hits.

Today, we kick it off with the non sport version.

This trade brought the nerd and kid out of me with toys and cards from some of my favorite cartoons growing up.

Spider Man! The cartoon was so much better than the movies they do.

 

No villain was greater than Venom.  Loved the episodes he was on.

Freeze! Mr. Freeze that is. Batman The Animated Series was one of my favorites.

Can't have just TMNT figures if you are a card collector at heart. You need some cards too. These are my first TMNT cards.

Toys Are For Grownups Too

Well, I pulled off another monstrosity of a trade this time with my buddy @Jake1725.

However, the main contents may not be what you expect.

Today, you will be shown the main contents of my medium flat rate box, then five to six other parts with the cards really broken down with some great ones to view.

This part though, is all about toys.

A couple of weeks ago, @Jake1725 had posted some TMNT figures he had and something in me wanted to pry them away. Alright, it was the kid in my I admit it. Anyways, we got to talking and what went from a simple trade for toys escalated to cards and more.

But, it was the toys that was the main focus here.

The turtles range from a variety of years and forms. Some are space, some are regular.

Landed three different ones of my favorite, Leonardo.

Shredder is looking more mean than he did in the 90's.

The foot actually looks more aggressive, I wouldn't want to mess with them.

Even got a couple of Star Wars toys in the mix. Love the Darth Maul!

And here are the Turtles I really wanted the most. Why is that? These are from the originals of the early 90's. The ones on my want list that can bring me back some to my childhood. Who doesn't want to do that?

All of the newer turtles came with all of their weapons while the older ones did not. It's probably not easy to keep track of those after 20+ years.

Finally in the bottom of the box under the turtles, guess I lied about no cards in this post, there were these uncut sheets of cards.

 

These are my first uncut sheets. Pretty cool especially the 1995 Skybox Premium football which was already awesome uncut. These make great additions to my 90's PC.

This is just the kick off of this trade, plenty more to come down the road.
