Rodney's Cardboard:1991 Topps Baseball Error Back

1991 Topps baseball was loaded with error cards. From glow backs to wrong stats, to 1990 football backs. Huh? Yup, some of these cards featured football card backs from the 1990 Topps set.

One of the cards I have been chasing for a few years once I found out it existed was the Juan Samuel base.

 

Why? Well, you must have put it together by now.

 

Yup, Juan Samuel has a Rodney Hampton rookie card back.

I was finally able to land this one for my collection thanks to a trade with @imoMitchCards who found a bunch of these wrong back cards at a thrift store and thought he had this version for me.

25 Days Of Cardmas Day 16:Please Come Home For Christmas

 

2020 will make for a different kind of Christmas for me.

Usually by now we would be expecting family from afar for Christmas #1 and Christmas #2 but with the pandemic, those days are gone this year and I will say it's really disheartening to say the least. I will miss the good times we have but as I have learned this year during all of this, it really makes you appreciate what you already have at home. This includes my hobby as well.

So this year instead of multiple Christmases I will be having one, just on Christmas. Which is okay because I will make it the best one ever.

 

Today's card is the oldest Santa card I own from my chase in the 1990 Pro Set version. I really hope someday to land the 1989 one.

 

Speaking of Santa and oldest one, really digging the older looking Santa's on this years Christmas stamps.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past:1990 Score Football

Today I am featuring yet another pack I have left unopened to open on a rainy day.

This one is nothing fancy and is one of the many overproduced sets in the early 90's.

 

You can pretty much pick up packs of this for next to nothing in today's world and whole sets go for less than $7 everyday. Well, not that one is sold everyday but you get what I am talking about. It's probably also why I haven't dug right in yet and busted this one. It's more of a keepsake.

Breakin Wax:1990 Panini Baseball Stickers

Well, I thought I would break the cheapest of my packs first and my only baseball one in my Jammin JD Sports Cards Retro buys.

My only reasoning for picking up this one, well, I wanted Griffey.

Each packet of 1990 Panini stickers baseball has 5 player stickers and 1 foil sticker. This pack costs .20 at Jammin JD Sports Cards.

Well, I didn't get my Griffey and in terms of players I know from this pack, Gary Gaetti and Dan Plesac is about it. I am sure the rest of you die hard baseball fans remember the other guys.

 

Here is that aforementioned Plesac with my foil sticker from the pack. Not a Cardinals fan, but still pretty cool.

 

Can't say you can argue with this pickup for the price on these. It was worth the risk with or without Griffey and it was a short trip down memory lane which is what matters most.

90's Happy Meal toys were so much cooler than today's. You combine transforming dinosaurs with your favorite kids food and you got a winner.

I found today's item in a free box at a yard sale. Mint condition. These aren't worth much more than memories, but that's all I need.

FEATURED CARDS: Today's theme has to do with food and dinosaurs who had a monstrous appetite. So when searching for cards for today, I came upon some Steve McNair rookie cards from 1995 and thought this was a good fit.

Steve was Someone who had a monstrous appetite for the field. He was not only a great passing QB, but the guy was a dual threat as a runner too. Not to mention tough and helped lead the Titans to the Super Bowl falling just a yard shy of possibly winning the Big Game.

I bought a ton of 1995 Pinnacle. I loved the inserts, Museum Collection cards and the base card design and photography in general.

Sport Flix...now if you can only focus your eyes after.

Fleer Metals debut. Was a great line for some time.

Reminiscing 90's SPECIAL EDITION:The Real Ghostbusters Ghost Sweeper Vehicle

Alright, I have some explaining to do. Yes, this segment is called, Reminiscing 90's. Yes, this is a toy from 1988. Yes, I do know the difference between 90's and 80's. However, I am making a case for this toy and keeping the segment still 90's because I watched the show mostly in the 90s and it ran from 1986-1991. So in order to make sure I do this right, I am keeping the toys as their real years, but I am coming up with random year of either 1990 or 1991 for the posts. That way it's as close to realistic as I can get and keeping tradition going with the posts.

I think my timing on this upcoming Ghostbusters mania is good due to the new movie releasing this year. I still don't know how I feel about that movie yet as I am one for originals of any movie, but we will see.

Are you afraid of ghosts??? Well, with this, you can just sweep them away and trap them! I picked up this mint piece in that big Ghostbusters lot I bought awhile back for $25. These alone can go for $15 at least. I also have the figure and ghost which makes it more valuable.

 

FEATURED CARDS: So then I thought to myself, what theme can I go with here...then I thought that it would be fun to take one of these for a spin..hmm for a spin...I just sorted some PBA cards...so let me find a few of those that shows a bowling ball going for a spin. Well., here you go!

Spectacular Advertising

Being a 90's kinda guy, one of the magazines I read from the 90's was Disney Adventures. The magazine discussed some of my favorite 90's Disney cartoons like Ducktales, Darkwing Duck and Goof Troop to name a few. It also contained comics of them as well so it was a well rounded winner.

So recently I found a newer issue, by newer I mean 2007, which was the final run of the magazine that started in 1990 and for fun went through it cover to cover to check it out.

I saw the usual things I remembered and then I came upon a very cool ad...

To me, this was a great advertisement for baseball cards. You combine every kids favorite and very popular Pokemon with baseball cards and you grab some attentions. Not to mention you also put it in the popular magazine that also has the word Disney on it, how do you not make some sales.

I know magazines today are more of a thing of the past (not for me as I prefer physical magazines over online ones) and probably wouldn't be a top ad place, but there is TV and that will never die. So why not do more advertising that way? Especially combining popular things of today with cards. Why not show Olaf from Frozen breaking a few packs of Topps or opening up his own Panini Sticker collection stickers? Why not have an Angry Bird ripping apart an Upper Deck hockey card pack? Or Darth Vader ripping a pack of Topps Star Wars open? I know it will take some investment on the companies sides to pay for use of those things, but I think if we want the youth of today joining in or being interested in today's hobby, I think it's important to see what interests them and use that to our advantage.

Will it help bring a huge up-rise to the hobby? Probably not. But, it may at least bring in a few more youth and those youth may discuss it with others and who knows where that ends up. Anything that can help the hobby grow will be huge.

What do you guys think? Should companies use popular things like Frozen to advertise cards?

I decided to kick this off with Egon for a few reasons. One, Egon founded Ghostbusters, Inc. along with Doctors Ray Stantz and Peter Venkman. Two, he is considered the brain behind the Ghostbusters and has designed and built nearly all of their equipment. Three, he is the leader to me. Everyone turns Egon for answers and he always comes up with something brilliantly.

This Egon toy is from the cartoon, Real Ghostbusters, not the movie. In some ways the cartoon was a running sequel from the movie.

I picked up this piece on eBay with many others for a cheap lot price. This is also why we are going on a bit of a Ghostbuster streak.

FEATURED CARDS:

When having to pair someone who founded something in the 90's and was a leader, I didn't have to look any further than Michael Jordan. He was the leader of the Bulls, he was someone teammates turned to when trouble arose and he always had an answer. He also founded many championships while playing there and helped create their complete dominance of the 90's.It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that!

I have had these cards for years. They are a 12-card set of 1998 Upper Deck Michael Jordan 3×5 cards from Gatorade. They were a mail in order item from Upper Deck that I got from a family member. I love the foil look with the black facsimile autograph.

 There is still more Ghostbustin' ahead!

1990 Pro Set Buick Super Bowl Hampton Rookie Addition

 

At first glance, this just looks like a plain Rodney Hampton rookie card. Believe me, I thought the same. Then I started to investigate as I noticed prices for these were a bit higher and they were harder to find.

Come to find out, this is a 1990 Pro Set Buick Rodney Hampton Super Bowl XXV Commemorative Card. This is from the 1990 Pro Set Buick Super Bowl XXV Silver Anniversary Set that was handed out at Super Bowl XXV. The difference between this and the base rookie is, the Buick card has a Red White and Blue Border at the top and bottom and Buick Logo in the lower right corner.

Finding only two of these on eBay made me grab it before it was too late.
