Reminiscing 90's:1999 Salvino Slammers

In what I think will be the finale of this segment, we will finish things off with some collectibles I picked up at a dollar store.

During the rave of the 1998 Home Run Chase between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa and the rave of Beanie Babies that had reached new heights, Salvino released a line of sports related beanie bears including the ones we will discuss today.

The line I am showing here captures that chase of the 1998 home run record.

First up, McGwire bear with the "70" on the front. Now-a-days we would list that as, *70.

 

Then comes Slammin Sammy with his 68 dingers.

And finally, Mr. Maris with his REAL 61 home runs he slugged.

 

I collected quite a few of these as they came in singles and in team double packs at the dollar store. Doesn't get any cheaper than that for a sports collectible.

Over the years however, I have only held onto these three and a big Derek Jeter bear as I was more focused on cards than I was collectibles.
 

While we are at it, let's take a look back to 1999 near Septmber 22nd and see what else was hot.

Reminiscing 90's:1994 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Heap Of Trouble Board Book

First off, don't ever judge a person who isn't under five and owns a board book haha.

Secondly, this isn't any board book. I am not learning about my ABC's in here. I am learning how the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers began! Something soon that all non-fans and those who don't remember the show will soon learn with the release of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie coming out by months end.

Even though it seems the movie is a bit different/darker from the show I watched, I am still excited about it's release and will have to see it at some point.

Here is the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers I knew in a quick board book summary.

 

It all started with Rita Repulsa being let out of a capsule after being locked in for thousands of years!

 

Zordon, the good guy,  had heard of this news and had to react fast. He gathered five teens with skills to his command center.

 

And soon those five teens would find out their fate from Zordon and why they were at his command center. They would soon know that they would be the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and would need to protect the universe from the evil Rita and her gang of monsters!

 

Of course that is just a quick summary of the beginning of the show and this book was only 8 pages long. There was so much cooler stuff that could have been discussed. Like how she threw her wand twirling towards the earth to make the monsters she created grow! Or the Zords, robot dinosaurs, that each Ranger owned that would combine into one Megazord to defeat that ginormous monster! Or how later on in the show it would add my favorite Ranger in Tommy, the Green Ranger who later on turned into the awesome White Ranger.  Not to mention when Lord Zedd comes into play and attempts to take over the universe with Rita.

Okay, I will stop now.

Anyways, sadly the board book is all that I have left of my Power Ranger items. I wished I had kept some of my figures like the spin-head Tommy and Jason or my White Tiger Zord. I sometimes look at them on eBay, but that's as far as I have gotten.

 

While we are at it, let's take a look back to 1994 near March 2nd and see what else was hot.

Reminiscing 90's:1996 TY Beanie Baby Scoop The Pelican

As promised, the winning return of Reminiscing 90's is back.

This time around for the segment, I decided to do away with the card portion and just focus on the featured item at hand and what memorable moments were happening in the 90's on this day and based on the year of the item.

There were many trends and fads in the 90's but none bigger to me than collecting TY Beanie Babies. Card shops, card shows and even roadside setups had them for sale or trade. They had actually become so popular, that even card collectors like myself had to take a little dive and find some.

The plastic pellet stuffed animals came out in 1993 but didn't begin to get hot til 1995 where they took over til 1999 when the trend died down some. They did come back in 2000 due to some demand and still are continuing today. However, it's not even close to as popular as it was from 95-99.

Just like with cards, the made some of these tough to find and rare variations to others which made the toy even more popular as collectors were looking to chase down those one-of-a kinds. One of the supposed most valuable bears is the Princess The Bear that commemorated Princess Diana and had the proceeds from each sale donated to her fund.

The TY I present you today comes from 1996. It's not rare and can be found pretty easily. I acquired it a few summers ago in a yard sale that came with a bunch of them for $5. I saw the price and couldn't say no. You know, helps reminisce.

 

Alright, let's take a look back to 1996 near February 20th and see what else was hot.

90's Happy Meal toys were so much cooler than today's. You combine transforming dinosaurs with your favorite kids food and you got a winner.

I found today's item in a free box at a yard sale. Mint condition. These aren't worth much more than memories, but that's all I need.

FEATURED CARDS: Today's theme has to do with food and dinosaurs who had a monstrous appetite. So when searching for cards for today, I came upon some Steve McNair rookie cards from 1995 and thought this was a good fit.

Steve was Someone who had a monstrous appetite for the field. He was not only a great passing QB, but the guy was a dual threat as a runner too. Not to mention tough and helped lead the Titans to the Super Bowl falling just a yard shy of possibly winning the Big Game.

I bought a ton of 1995 Pinnacle. I loved the inserts, Museum Collection cards and the base card design and photography in general.

Sport Flix...now if you can only focus your eyes after.

Fleer Metals debut. Was a great line for some time.

However, I am making a case for this toy and keeping the segment still 90's because I watched the show mostly in the 90s and it ran from 1986-1991. So in order to make sure I do this right, I am keeping the toys as their real years, but I am coming up with random year of either 1990 or 1991 for the posts. That way it's as close to realistic as I can get and keeping tradition going with the posts.

I think my timing on this upcoming Ghostbusters mania is good due to the new movie releasing this year. I still don't know how I feel about that movie yet as I am one for originals of any movie, but we will see.

It's simple, Janine is scared. So scared that she rotates to fight off the ghosts! This piece came in that big lot I bought off eBay. It was quite the lot for only $25. Today marks the final part to my Ghostbusters series even though I do have more to show. But, it's time to move on.

DC Superheroes+Janine..well...yes. She was a superheroe to some answering that phone non-stop for the ghost calls. She also went out on a few ghost chase herself. So to me, she is a super hero.

Believe it or not, I got this toy for FREE at a Yard Sale. It was sitting in a free box and I quickly scooped it up recognizing it from my childhood. It's missing the pull component, but the rest of the toy is in pretty good shape.

The toy is simple, activates "full" speed ahead when you pull out the pulling mechanism.

I thought today's ghost is a bit scary, so I wanted to find some cardboard that matched how scary it was. So look out, these players faces might scare ya!

Are you afraid of ghosts??? Well, with this, you can just sweep them away and trap them! I picked up this mint piece in that big Ghostbusters lot I bought awhile back for $25. These alone can go for $15 at least. I also have the figure and ghost which makes it more valuable.

FEATURED TOY:
This is a fun toy to play with, but to put it back together can be a pain. Winston is wearing a suit that you must snap on around him. There is a dome that goes over his head but I lost patience in putting it on so I left it alone. However, a red lever in the back when pushed down makes his head tuck in and the front where the Ghostbusters symbol is his "scared" face pops open!

Winston Zeddemore applied for the open position for the Ghostbusters in the first movie. He basically took the job without any paranormal experience but wanted a paycheck. He was a bit of a brain but was mostly the voice of reason for the Ghostbusters when they really needed it.

FEATURED CARDS:
At first I struggled trying to find a card(s) to match up with Winston, then I decided that looking at his suit that he looked like a space cadet or someone who would time travel. Then it hit me, time travel+90's=Bill and Ted. Yes, the two time traveling baboons.

So here we go, Pro Set Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure Trading Cards.This was a 100 card set that Pro Set put out in 1991. I never completed the set and only saw the movie once, but I do have a few cards kicking around and did like the cartoon series however.

 

Any thoughts on today's day in history from the 90's, the Toy or the trading cards are welcomed!

Peter Venkman was known as the leader of the Ghostbusters by some, I still think Egon was as I put in my previous post, but he was known for his quick wit and cynical demeanor. Not to mention his liking of the ladies. In the movies he was portrayed by the great Bill Murray and on the Real Ghostbusters cartoon he was voiced by Lorenzo Music and then by Dave Coulier.

I got this toy as part of a lot I purchased on eBay. This one is missing a few pieces, but still a cool piece and in pretty good condition.

 

FEATURED CARDS:
So when I had to come up with a theme for this one, I thought some cards that may display some of Venkman's qualities may help.

 

Bo looks like he may had spotted a lady friend...

 

Tom Glavine looks like he will have a few witty words to say after this slide.

 

John is seems to be holding a low opinion of his defender as he is driving right by them carrying the basketball like a football.

 

Drew appears to be very pessimistic about making his jump or having fun trying to do so. Look at his fake smile...

I decided to kick this off with Egon for a few reasons. One, Egon founded Ghostbusters, Inc. along with Doctors Ray Stantz and Peter Venkman. Two, he is considered the brain behind the Ghostbusters and has designed and built nearly all of their equipment. Three, he is the leader to me. Everyone turns Egon for answers and he always comes up with something brilliantly.

This Egon toy is from the cartoon, Real Ghostbusters, not the movie. In some ways the cartoon was a running sequel from the movie.

I picked up this piece on eBay with many others for a cheap lot price. This is also why we are going on a bit of a Ghostbuster streak.

FEATURED CARDS:

When having to pair someone who founded something in the 90's and was a leader, I didn't have to look any further than Michael Jordan. He was the leader of the Bulls, he was someone teammates turned to when trouble arose and he always had an answer. He also founded many championships while playing there and helped create their complete dominance of the 90's.It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that!

I have had these cards for years. They are a 12-card set of 1998 Upper Deck Michael Jordan 3×5 cards from Gatorade. They were a mail in order item from Upper Deck that I got from a family member. I love the foil look with the black facsimile autograph.

Most of us who grew up in the 90's knew who Doug was. If not, here is a quick recap on the show that came out around the same time as classics Ren&Stimpy and Rugrats.

The show focuses on growing up with its title character, Doug Funnie, who had just moved into a new town and school in Bluffington. The show covered many topics of trying to fit in. Whether it was bullying to rumors to romance which was a big focus on the show with his classmate and main crush, Patti Mayonnaise.
 

Doug aired from August 11, 1991-January 2, 1994 On Nickelodeon before they decided to not continue on with it. It was then picked up by ABC that was bought by Disney and they played the new episodes on One Saturday Morning (man that theme is now in my head) from September 7, 1996-June 26, 1999. Luckily before the show ended, they were able to release theatrical feature-length film, Doug's 1st Movie which is what this toy is from.

I picked up this fine memory piece from a free box at a yard sale.The pen even still works and the toy is basically mint.

FEATURED CARDS:

Doug, even though the main character, seemed to always be under the radar when it came to character placement. I guess that's what you get when you move to a new town and learn life lessons of growing up.

I thought I would choose a few players cards from the 90's that I always thought were great, but never seemed to get the spotlight.

John Stockton seemed to always have Karl Malone over his shoulder "delivering". Even though John was always dishing it around and especially to Karl. Allan Houston was always under the radar for the Knicks, even though he made a key shot many times. But, when you have Patrick Ewing....

 

Chris Warren and Cris Carter were both BEASTS for their respective teams. But, it always seemed like when it came to the hobby or in popularity contests, they would never finish at the top.

 

Same could always be said for McGriff. He was a truly seasoned veteran that played for many teams but never truly stood out despite how well the "Crime Dog" played. Edgar was teammates with Ken Griffey Jr, Randy Johnson and Alex Rodriguez. That alone should be enough said, even though this guy could truly hit with the best.

 

So who do you guys have as your player(s) that were great but always felt like they were in the "shadows" of others?

(By the way, after this episode, we are going on a complete Ghostbusters streak to get ready for the new movie!)
