Cardboard Review:2021 Topps Heritage Minors

As baseball season winds down, still can't believe we are in the World Series and still can't believe the matchup we ended up with as well, the baseball releases are as well.

Today, we look to the future of baseball with my break of 2021 Topps Heritage Minors.

In every box of 2021 Topps Heritage Minors is 18 packs of 8 cards. There will also be 2 on-card autos in every box and boxes currently run an affordable $70 or less.

 

There is also one box topper as well.

1972 Topps Baseball Posters are within. There are also 1/1 foilboard versions and autograph versions of these as well. There are 20 of these cards overall.

BASE:

The base set is designed after the 1972 design and includes In Action and 1972 Topps Traded subsets.

(some collectors are not happy about these, not sure why)

The overall base set is 200 cards deep with many of the upcoming stars.

SHORT PRINTS/PARALLELS:

There are 20 base card Sp's that covers numbers 200-220.

/Black Border parallel  and are /50

Erik Rivera flip stock /25. It's glossy on the back and cardboard feel on the front.

INSERTS:

There are a variety of inserts in Heritage Minors.

 

There are 21 cards to collect in the Pack Cover set that falls 1:6 packs.

1:4 packs you will find yourself Boyhood Photos Of The Stars. There are 14 of these to collect overall.

1972 Topps Venezuelan Stamp Cards Set falls 1:4 packs and has 15 cards to collect.

HITS:

I don't know the players, but the signatures themselves are solid. Some effort put in and they are on-card.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

Garrett Mitchell, Spencer Torkelson, Austin Martin are among the big names you can find on the autograph checklist.

I think the cost per box with a solid checklist seems worth the risk here.

A Trade Sandwich

*it's 34 degrees, my wife's car was frosted and had to be started ten minutes prior to leaving. That time will need to be increased as winter creeps closer. At least the warmth of coffee will keep me going this morning before my 38 year old body falls apart from the aches and pains of coldness. takes a sip, begins to sit down and hears a snap crackle pop as the sitting process begins. takes another sip and begins to type*

Is it just me or does almost every trade turn into what I would call a trade sandwich.

There is that bottom later of bread, the start of any good built sandwich and the start to any good trade.

Then there is the mayo or special sauce on that piece of bread as your sandwich continues to build. You need this layer and it needs to be thick.

Then comes the meat. I prefer turkey or chicken breast myself, but sometimes I go spicy or add some ham to that turkey. The meat is not only an important piece to a sandwich, but to a trade as well. Without the meat, the trade dies off at the bread or in sandwich terms, enjoy your toast.

Then comes the veggies. I like the basics on my sandwich. Tomato, lettuce, onion. Sometimes I feel a sandwich needs pickles and/or banana peppers depending on the sauce and the meat I use. The veggies in a trade are the surrounding pieces to the part of the trade.

You then enclose the veggies and the meat with the cheese and another helping of sauce or mayo. For me, give me swiss cheese on my sandwiches or a few more 90's inserts in this case.

And to finish up a sandwich, you need that top layer of bread which finishes up the sandwich or the trade in this case. I like to make sure my top layer is worthy to finish off my sandwich or trade.

Not all of my trades are sandwiches, sometimes they are just a piece of toast or two. Usually if I am going to mail a bubbler, it better be sandwich worthy. Otherwise, those will be going PWE.

I got a lot of great cards from Nick above as I targeted 90's inserts as the main part of the trade. As I stated it started with the Betts for my Unleashed collection and then was built from there. The Toney I really wanted as the top piece as that is one great looking card with Giants blue against the Press Proof blue.

The Plummer And His Blue Crew

My good buddy @StephenJFurlong and I pulled off a massive trade back in 2018 helping both of us add to our PC's. I assumed at some point my fellow Giants fan would get the itch to trade again and that's what we did.

This time my end of the deal was very NY Giants heavy with a couple exceptions. He used to go to training camp and get a lot of In-Person autographs, usually I only take company authenticated ones, but coming from him I knew I was good with these. Most were signed in-person but there are some that weren't and came from companies.

Let's check out the goods shall we?

 

Antrel Rolle who played a major roll(e) in the secondary when he was signed from the Cardinals.

 

Charles "show me the" Way. Dude was a beast fullback in the 90's.

 

Justin Tuck! I miss his domination on the Giants dline. It's too bad he couldn't have finished as a Giant and had to end his career in torturous Oakland.

 

Antonio Pierce was probably the last best Giants Linebacker they have had in some time. He played big time rolls in their Super Bowl runs and was a great leader of the defense. I keep hoping that the Gmen will find their next Pierce.

 

David Carr made a name for himself by being the first draft pick by the Houston Texans but failed to live up to potential. He did however serve as a solid backup to Eli Manning and finished his career with a ring because of it.

 

Jernigan is one of my biggest Giants PC's and this just adds another to it.

 

The once DE turned LB played better for the Giants than he signed this card. Still a nice looking card and a solid player for the Giants at both positions. This is my first autograph of him.

 

Terrell Thomas was on okay corner for the Giants. They don't seem to have the best of luck with drafting those but he had his moments in helping the Giants make their playoff runs.

 

Another Giant that should have finished his career in Giants blue, he finished in Colts blue, Bradshaw has many moments with the Giants but the most iconic moment is in the Super Bowl when he should have down the ball at the goal line but momentum shifted him in the endzone for the TD. That left time on the clock for Tom Brady who almost pulled off the epic comeback on the Hail Mary.

 

Will Allen was a solid defensive back for the Giants but I can't recall too many moments with him right now.

 

Osi was apart of the Giants scary defensive line with Tuck, Strahan, and Kiwanuka. I miss those days, I truly do. Defense wins games as I saw four times at least this season when the Giants lost because of their defense. That's how I play Madden as well.

 

Joe Montgomery had a short career with the Giants, but was a guy I needed an autograph of for my Giants product. Now I can cross him off.

 

Eli! I still think this guy has one more season left and I am hoping to see it. If not, hope he retires as a Giant. Don't go elsewhere Eli. Please!

 

This serves as my first relic of Ottis but also has been signed IP.

The next two Giants autographs I took an outside the box look at them. Not players but unique pieces to their Super Bowl wins. These are signed on large magnets.

 

Kevin Gilbride was the offensive coordinator

 

Jerry Reece was the Giants GM. He was recently fired for his role in the Giants recently downhill tumbles.

The next two cards have nothing to do with the Giants and have more to do with my 90's PC.

 

Paul Konerko rookie autograph. I do have one other autograph of him but nowhere near as nice as this one.

Jake Plummer who I loved to watch in the 90's. I enjoyed his time more with the Cardinals than the Broncos after he switched teams later on in his career.

A big thanks to @StephenJFurlong for another great trade and some great cards once again. Can't wait til our next one!

Player Profile 3: Paul Konerko

Player Profile is a series that breaks down players I have pulled from my collection and designated as a player collection. These are mostly stars from the past and present and only include base cards and inserts. Hits and rookie cards are not counted. Some players I pulled because I was a fan of their game, others are obvious because of their play. Some players I actually look for cards of in packs while others get just placed in these boxes. This series will break down how many cards I have of the player, what my Top 5 favorite cards are of the player and why I pulled the player for a player collection.

This series will also cover all four sports I collect. 

Player By The Numbers For Paul Konerko: 55 Different Cards.

Paul Konerko was a very underrated player in my opinion especially in the hobby. A guy who went about his business without a lot of recognition for doing so. Sometimes those are the guys I like the most which is another reason I like Rodney Hampton so much.

Paul quietly was a 6x All-Star, won a World Series in 2005 and was the ALCS MVP that year as well. He also won the Roberto Clemente award in 2014 before calling it quits at the end of that season as well. He was also a captain and leader of that team as well from 2006-2014.

So here are my Top 5 favorite cards for Paul.

#5. Most of us only remember his time for the White Sox, but Paul did play for the Reds for a short time as well. I like having a variety of cards for one player if they played on multiple teams. Paul got traded from the Reds to the White Sox and the rest was history after.

#4 I just enjoyed the photography angle of him getting someone out on base.

#3 speaking of photography, Upper Deck had to make this list as I assume they will with any of my Player Profiles. There isn't much to say about this photo as I think it speaks for itself.

 

#2. Paul also played for the Dodgers who were the team that drafted him before he got traded to the Reds. I chose this card as number two mainly because of the nice design from Omega, but slightly because it features the team he originated from.

 

And finally card #1 is this Donruss Studio base from 2005 This design was pretty well done. Paul's stance and the city in the backdrop looks pretty cool. Card also has a "White Sox" tint to it.

Paul has been well celebrated by the White Sox since his retirement. They retired his number, built a statue of him and celebrated his Game 2 World Series grand slam in their 25th celebration of their stadium.
