Burbank Pickups Of The Month:April 2022 Edition

My latest mail day from Burbank Sportcards Beckett Marketplace took me on a trip to the 90's.

I will always take that trip 100% of the time and wished it was a real-life trip.

A 90's insert trip works for now though.

It's amazing how I am lead to certain inserts or products. I don't specifically look up these inserts, they just happen to find me. If I think they are cool, I will add them to the card.

Just like these 1999 E-X Century E-Xtrodinary inserts that fell 1:9 packs. The design reminds me of the bubble insert that Topps used in its Bowman inserts. This one has more of a lenticular feel to it than those did.

There wasn't a huge selection of players but I did grab one of each they had available.

I know what you are thinking and I agree, they just don't make them like they used to. Today's inserts are way too plain. If these existed today they would be considered case hits which are the only cool inserts made now-a-days.

The next round of cards I actually needed for my set chase, but I was once again led to them as I forgot I had started this set chase.

Rookie Rising fell 1:11 packs back in 1997 Zenith, the last year of the awesome product of the 90's.

I found four I needed for my set including a Giants one I didn't know existed in the set,

Burbank Pickups Of The Month: August 2021 Edition

It's that time of the month, well, not that, but it is for my Burbank Snags of the month!

Sometimes when I am looking on Burbank, I don't search for cards. Sometimes I find them searching for me. 

For example, today's mail day. All I did was type in Ex and the search came up with a ton of options which led to these Bright Lights cards that just glared at me. I needed them and I am so happy I grabbed them as they are really cool.

The cards feature a neon yellow/green acetate background with a full colored player in the forefront.

As you can see, the whole card is plastic.

I grabbed these three players as they were the cheapest options to buy on there but I may have to go back and see if they have more.

The Latest 90's Spx Add!

As most readers of this blog or followers of my Twitter account know, I love 90's Spx and have been trying to knock down every set/card I can from every sport.

It's not as easy as it sounds.

I have so far completed:
1996, 1997, 1998 Spx football base sets
1996 Spx racing
1997 Spx racing
1996 Spx hockey
1997 Spx baseball
1997-1998 Spx basketball
1996 Spx football Tribute cards and the Tribute autographs

And am close to these ones,
1997 Spx hockey (13 away)
1996 Spx baseball (13 away)
1996 Spx basketball (need just the MJ)
1996 Spx hockey Holoview Heroes (just a couple remain)

So there is still much, much more to go with inserts, autographs and parallels.

Today is one of those parallel sets, this is 1998 Spx football Steel which fell 1:1 packs in a three card pack. I found a 42 card lot, with 50 in the total set, for $3.24. Yes, $3 and 24 cents. That's a steal.

The lot also included a lot of big names as well.

I was shocked that this ended so cheaply and that I was able to close out most of this parallel set in one swoop.

Now I just got to find the last 8 cards to get this completed and will update those numbers on here soon.

Jon Sends The 90's

Awhile back, Jon over at A Penny Sleeve For Your Thoughts blog mentioned that he had grabbed a few packs for me at a sale he went to.

He recently sent me those packs along with some sweet 90's add ins.

As everyone who has read this blog for awhile now knows, I am a huge Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fan and the packs he found were right up my alley. I haven't ever busted these or seen them so this should be a fun rip at some point. Have been thinking about saving them for Christmas then revealing the contents on here. The Series 2 pack above comes with a Power Cap, POG as we called them in the 90's so that should be awesome. Fingers crossed for Kimberly or Tommy!

This Series 2 pack, I assume one is hobby and one is retail, comes with a foil card per pack. Even sweeter.

Jon then proceeded to send along some Spx Finite football cards from 1998 I forgot until I got them that we had discussed in the past he had some extras of.

The 1998 Spx Finite isn't on my full radar, yet, unlike the 1996-1998 releases that were full of hologram awesomeness but who knows. I can't predict where my mind will drift off to next. All of the base cards in that set were numbered.

I think the cards looks nice in terms of layout, design and a touch of foil. Just would be a hard set to chase being all numbered and having Peyton Manning in it.

Not to mention this set has layers to it.

Series one has 190 cards and Series two had 180 cards. Series One base cards, 1-90 were numbered to 7600-sets followed by subsets Playmakers 91-120 that is numbered to 5500-sets and Youth Movement that covered cards 121-150 and numbered to 3000 then Pure Energy cards 151-170 that was numbered to 2500 finally finished off by Heroes of the Game for card numbers 171-180 and numbered to 1250.  Series Two contains had  base cards 191-280 that were numbered to 10,100, Extreme Talent that was card numbers 281-310 and numbered to 7200 followed by the New School cards 311-340 and numbered to 4000 then Sixth Sense cards 341-360 numbered to 2700 and finally Uncommon Valor cards 361-370 numbered to 1620.

Like I said, a lot of layers. Each base card also had 2 parallels.

And Jon must have seen how much I liked the Kelvin Cato he posted. These Wave Of The Future cards with liquid in them are pretty sharp.

The Snake Stops Here

I don't always check my Hotmail more than once a day, but when I saw one from Nate over at The Buc Stops Here blog I had to check it out. Him and I had never done a trade before but I am always welcoming to new blog traders. Not to mention he told me he had two cards off from my Top 20 want list which is located on the right side of the blog.

He kicked off a streak of luck I had narrowing down some of those wants but still many to go.

Nate not only sent along the two cards off from the list, I will get to those in a minute, he also sent two Eli Mannings I didn't have as well. I have and always will be a fan of Eli and root him on. I am not quite ready to see him step away yet. Maybe after this year. He looked good in the first game I thought other than one or two plays that should have gone elsewhere. He also showed a little life in his long ball with the Hail Mary before halftime. Now if only the Giants defense had the same life. I said this on Twitter and will say it here, I could have thrown a TD against that defense. No pass rush and no coverage. Terrible and they lost because of it. It's like a repeat of last year all over again.

One of the Eli's he passed along was this Orange Topps Chrome refractor. The other is a Absolute parallel above.

The two cards he really had me hooked on was the ones on my Top 20 want list and ones that help my chase for the 1997 Topps Chrome football set I am hoping to build after a 22 year hiatus of owning it.

First card is this Warrick Dunn rookie showing off the Buc's new helmet. No more orange.

And the second one was probably my favorite base of the 90's, the Jake Plummer rookie. Such a great photo of Jake The Snake Plummer with a snake. Doesn't get any better for a base card than this. All of the photography for rookies in '97 Chrome were probably the best there was.

Thanks to Nate for the mail day. I haven't been posting many mail days on here as of late. Trying to catch up in the next month on backlogged series posts with most of my mail day ones being posted on Twitter. I don't however post Blogger mail days there. They go here.

The Origins Of A Cardboard Addict:I'll Stand By You

I'll stand by you,
I'll stand by you, won't let nobody eat you,
I'll stand by you......no bake cookies

It was the 1990's and I was introduced for the very first time to an appealing dessert called no bake cookies. Wait...What? Cookies you don't have to bake? Am I eating raw egg? Should I dare try some? Well, I did and they were wonderful. As a kid, I would have eaten anything with the word cookie in it but these were by far the bomb superior of cookies.

My friend Aaron's mom made two wonderful versions of the cookie with chocolate (somehow plain chocolate without peanut butter in it) and peanut butter. I would go over to his house sometimes just to eat some of his moms food. I am sure I wasn't the only kid who would spend a night at a friends house to eat their moms food.

Ever since then, I have stood by No Bake Cookies making my own today. I can perfectly nail down the peanut butter version, but for some reason or another, I cannot do the plain chocolate ones. I have tried every recipe as well. I used some with some peanut butter in it, some chocolate chips and even baking cocoa and they never harden and are runny. Not that eating a spoonful isn't bad, but it's not the same as eating a cookie.

At least 90's insert/parallels  don't require a recipe and stay firm on their own. They always come out the same no matter which brand I get.

There was nothing better than pulling a 90's inserts/parallels and I will Stand By that statement all day long. I would take any of them over pulling a player worn single color jersey swatch any day.

In one of my Wes' mail days, it took me back to revisiting some of those great inserts/parallels. It brought me back to a time when the hobby was simpler and more fun. A time when base cards looked better than the inserts of today. A time when inserts were valuable and worth the time of finding them. A time when parallels were more than just a color change on a border or background. A time when the hobby wasn't about making money, it was about collecting because it was a hobby. A time I will always stand by and collect.

Here are some of those inserts/parallels. They don't need captions or words. They just need your eyes. Because once you look at them, it's hard to turn away.They stand by themselves.

The cards above are one of my reasons I find myself going back to the 90's to collect. And to be honest, it's even more fun now landing those cards. I understand the hobby better now and what I am seeing.

I can stand by 90's inserts, but can't stand by Aaron's moms cooking anymore as sleepovers are not a thing for adults and it may be a little weird if I showed up to his mom's house to do one.I am sure she still cooks great but can't stand by that as I do with the 90's inserts/parallels.
