BOT-ember!

 I am a guy of numbers and when I see numbers go crazy like they this past month on here, I tend to question them.

I really haven't had time to post at all on here since May as most of my blogging focus has been on Cards Over Coffee, which is now my main blog.

But, for kicks, I actually started posting on here the last few days to see what kind of traffic would kick up....it actually made them go down.

That's how you know the bots took over.

That and my blogging records that were absolutely destroyed.

 

Last month alone this blog put up 328,190 views which was two times plus the record I had on here. This blog wasn't alone as Cards Over Coffee did the same kind of record numbers, even though I did post a few times on there (ps check them out and go follow!!)

I do appreciate those of you who do come here to read my posts still and maybe some of you go back and read the older posts here still.

I am trying to decide what the future and fate are of all three of my blogs, the other is Big Blue Cardboard, as my college classes ramp up and my life gets busier. I am no where close to retiring, just have to find the time to blog when and where I can and how I can.

Being that this blog is much quicker, you may see more posts on here in the next few months with older segments returning which is what I did in May.

Everybody Makes Mistakes

The great philosopher Miley Cyrus, if you consider a great philosopher one who rides a wrecking ball, once sang on Hannah Montana that "Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has those days" in her song Nobody's Perfect. All I can say that I had one of those days last week.

The plan I had come up with was simple, I would retire all three of my blogs and start a new blog combining the best things from the three. As the saying goes, there was a monkey wrench thrown into those plans or a monkey throwing a wrench at me was more like it.

As I started putting together a new blog and had it all set up, I realized all of the work it was going to take to remarket the blog, get it out there, etc. So, I thought to myself, if I am retiring my biggest blog, why not use that bigger stage as my main stage for the new blog? That way I can start over and not have to worry about having to spread the word on another blog.

I began the process of cleaning this blog up, first I downloaded the contents of the blog then imported them into another blog. Then I deleted every post on here for the past ten years. I was feeling good about the new direction despite having some struggles with coming up with a name.

Once again, that darn monkey came back and hit me with another wrench, and I decided that I no longer wanted to stick with those plans. I wanted to preserve this blog as Sport Card Collectors and keep it retired that way and focus on my other two blogs going forward.

That led me to the process of trying to import the posts back on here....except this time the monkey came back with a sledgehammer and hit me pretty good as the posts will not re-import on here anymore. I have tried for the past week and a half to bring them back but they just won't import. The verification process ends every time and it won't complete the upload.

I have tried it on multiple WiFi's, Mobile Hot Spots, laptop, phone, different web browsers and nothing is working.

In return, this brought upon a lot of disappointment, sadness and frustration and maybe a little depression. I had to work through a lot, which what led to me not posting much and not even being on Twitter that actively.

This now brings us to today. I have decided not to let this bother me any further and as Bob Ross stated, "we don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents", that this exactly what happened here, a happy little accident. It can be fixed, it may not be the way I want it to be fixed but it can be done in another way.

Today, I introduce to you, One GIANT Blog For CollectorKind (Since the comments were deleted, I can't thank the one who came up with most of the blog name either. Thank you whoever you were.). It may not have ten years of blogging or comments anymore, but what it does have is the heart which is myself and the memories of Sport Card Collectors.

This blog will turn out to be the blog I planned when I started this deleting process. I hope all of you will continue to read this blog like you used to and get ready for some new fresh ideas along with some older ones.

Also, before I close the new beginning post on here, I wanted to let you know if you are interested in reading old posts from Sport Card Collectors, other than trying to read gibberish from a file stuck on my phone, you can also check out all 5700 posts on THIS BLOG.

Clearing My Mind,Blogs And PC

If you haven't noticed in the past month and a half, I have put in a least-than-satisfactory effort on here in terms of blogging. If I was in graded school, I would have gotten a LS or 1 on my report card.

There was a lot of Sets Talk and Caption This posts and a bunch of other crud I just threw in as day fillers to pass the time. I should had just left the days blank.

I was in a massive blogpression.

The stats fell, the comments weren't there, I felt it was becoming too sponsored on here and I was in a writers block with no direction and simply just didn't want to look at this blog. I couldn't however just let the blog fall by the wayside either, so I plugged in some filler posts until I could figure out what to do.

A month and a half later of letting my mind rest, I found myself thinking it was time for a return. A return by creating a new blog called Diary Of A Collector. I thought by starting a new blog I could spark myself to continue on blogging which it did, but it sparked me back to here. Not there.

I am not sure why a weeks worth of posts on there got me motivated to come back here, but it did. And to me, that's what really matters. I needed to be back on here, this is my baby and my baby needed to be tended to.

So as of this weekend, I am back on here. Back to where I started and feel good about going forward. I have overcome that bump in the road and will have new, better content moving forward. Even though you will see the occasional Caption This just to use up my drafts.

As for Diary Of A Collector, sorry for those of you I sent over there to follow it (and for Jon who was helping me out by spreading the word) as I have officially deleted it. I have also deleted two other blogs that have been sitting stale for awhile in Snagging Cardboard (my Giants PC one that lost its appeal once Odell left) and Now That's Some High Quality Cardboard so I can just put my focus onto here.

It's sort of that new start I was looking for you could say.

While I also have your attention, I should also update my PC on here. And yes, I have added some basketball PC players now.

There were a lot of ups and downs to start the year when it comes to blogging and it doesn't mean there won't be more down the road, but right now I am in a good place when it comes to being back on here. I guess what I needed was that short vacation from burnout.

Hobby Resolutions 2020

It's that time of year again, time to make New Years resolutions. I try not to make them for my personal life as I have never once stuck to them with it mostly being weight based. You know the "I will be a better person this year." "I will try to avoid eating donuts" "I will at least lose 10 pounds this year" When honestly, most of these are things we should be doing already every day and not things we set for the beginning of the year only to fail a few weeks later. I know that personally many times.

Even though this year I have set a 15 pound loss goal because it was what I put on the last couple of years. I would like to at least get back to where I was, I could never lose the 50+ my Dr actually wants as I don't like a lot of vegetables and meats. I am a carb-a-tarian.

Last year I set some pretty lofty collecting goals for my collection and they were my biggest ones yet. Let's see how I did.

Before I move onto my 2020 goals, let's take a look back at my 2019 ones.

1. Add 1 set from my 1990's Spx needs (added 3 I need to show)
2. Finish up my three favorite football 90's insert sets (NOT EVEN CLOSE)
3. Finish up my 1996 Spx baseball set (noooooooooppppppe)
4. Finish up more 90's insert and base card sets. (I did finish up at least five sets, but many more to go!)
5. Add 100 more new Griffey Jr's (think I fell well short of this)
6. Add 50 more new Rodney Hamptons (well since it's getting harder to find newer ones, I could only pull in less than 30)
7. Add some new Non Sport Autographs from my list of wants. I will be posting those soon as I revamp my tabs.(added some of those!!)
8. Start my collection overhaul (re-organized my entire collection!)
9. Post updates on my collection overhaul project (think I did some but not all)
10. Put at least half of my Griffey want list onto the computer if not all then upload it to here (finished it all!!)
11. Improve the blog look, appeal, and content (this is always a goal and this year I am really striving to do so)
12. Fix all of my want lists, checklists, and update the face of the blog (on and off I did)
13. Make a list of more late 90's sets I want to finish adding the set number needs on here. (did this!!)
14. Improve the way I write. It's been a habit to type what I write before my pictures, but it seems I have been doing that wrong for the past 6 plus years and it needs to be fixed. I always thought words lead into a picture but it's not as the words must be posted after. I also want to add more words and information to each post. Or even a flashback memory. Something that won't make the articles so short and sweet. (I started to then fell off the wagon again. sigh. I think it's because I strive to do daily content that I just throw something up)
15. Post less mail days on here or find more creative ways of posting them instead of this is this and this is that type of posts. They bug me when I do those. I may move some/most mail days back to Twitter only (we will see) and post more articles on the things I am passionate about instead. (did some of this but gotta strive to do more in 2020) 
16. Work on a new blog name. Yes, I am still at that point of wanting a new one and would love to accomplish it by my blogs birthday in March. I want this title to say what I collect like Eli's Crew or anything you guys can come up with. Wes suggested "In The Cards". I do like that one. But something that covers Ken Griffey Jr, NY Giants, Rodney Hampton, Non Sports and the 90's. (I did and it was a good one but for some reason or another, it hurt this blog in the long run)
17. Use the background my wife picked up to take blog pictures on. I waste so much time taking pictures and cropping. WAY TOO MUCH. With this background it will be just snap and upload which will save me tons of time. (did this and boy does it save time)
18. Cutout/cutback on trading with newbies. I know this sounds odd, but I wasted too much precious time last year digging stuff out only to have a trade fail. This was many, many, many times of spending hours digging out trade bait and having the person preferring to sell or simply just backing out despite liking what I offered. So my trades will happen only with my usual group.(no, I fell for newbie trades again but I would say overall my trading was way down in 2019 due to funds to ship) 

There was a lot to do in that list but I was pretty successful.

Lets check out 2020. We will see some similar goals involved

1. KEEP MYSELF MOTIVATED TO BLOG. (I have been teetering on this for a couple of months and this one will not be easy)
2. Add 1 set from my 1990's Spx needs (really need to get a basketball one done)
3. Finish up my three favorite football 90's insert sets (GOT TO FO-CUS)
4. Finish up my 1996 Spx baseball set (Dennis gets me closer, but I am still not at the finish line)
5. Finish up more 90's insert and base card sets. (so many I want to do)
6. Add 100 more new Griffey Jr's (time to try this again)
7. Add 20 more new Rodney Hamptons (this number gets less and less as I close in on all)
8. Add some new Non Sport Autographs from my list of wants. I will be posting those soon as I revamp my tabs.(will be adding a new list)
9. Add 100 Kerry Collins for that new PC.

That's it for 2020. I set my goals shorter this year in hopes I can accomplish more of the things that have more meaning to me. Makes sense doesn't it?

7-Year Blogversary!

Seven years ago today, I started sport card blogging, wow.

I had just started my journey in learning the new age of collecting via social media as I wasn't much of an internet fiend up to that point. I set up the The Cardboard Fans Facebook page-one I failed to mention last year when I did this post- that went flat fast for a short period which drove me to do a Sport Card Collectors one. I never knew it would grow so much over the years and have a blog add on after a year of running it.

How did I discover blogging? As I expanded my internet collecting, I read/joined forums and had discovered a couple of sport card blogs along the way and because of them, one was The Knights Lance by Panini and the other was the now retired Sports Card Blog.net. I am not sure what it was, but something to do with the posts on The Knights Lance in February and the contests that Sports Card Blog.net was running, it was one of those instant "duh" moments that I needed to start up a sports card blog. Something simply led me to it and I just can't explain it fully.

So began my journey in figuring out how to blog and what platform. It seemed blogspot was the easiest to use, so I set something up, put in an obvious name (I regret the name still as creativity was not in my books at the time but guess I am stuck with it FOR NOW) and tried to figure out all of the nooks and crannies on how to post. With lots of help/guidance from the one and only Tracy Hackler, who I consider my main inspiration for blogging and my Yoda on getting me going, I was able to put up some posts and get underway. It definitely didn't come easy as I was still a rookie making rookie mistakes. You know, taking poor pictures, copy and pasting pics from my Photobucket that disappeared over time and simply not understanding what/how to fully post with many errors.

None of that got me down however and it only drove me to work harder at it.

My sophomore blogging year things improved but I still ran into rookie mistakes. However, with that year and each one after, I continued to tweak things up to try and keep readers interested. I ran many, many, many contests and surprise mail days as I love giving back to the hobby community that has given so much to me. Glad I am still able to do that today and hopefully beyond.

I sometimes can't fathom how long I have been blogging on here and the many changes and shifts I have made over these amazing seven years and the many great people I have met in the online community.

Going into year seven, I have some major changes coming. Every year I think I am happy with the way things are going, than change my mind. It's all apart of the blogging process and hopefully at some point I will find my zig to go with my zag.

So let's see how Year 7 matched up to previous years, here is the breakdown:

Year One, Sport Card Collectors blog had 68,169 overall views. 695 Twitter Followers and 118 Facebook LIKES.

Year Two, Sport Card Collectors blog grew to 205,240 overall views, 2,206 Followers on Twitter and 147 Facebook LIKES.

Year Three, Sport Card Collectors blog grew to 340,841 overall views, 3,576 Followers on Twitter and  159 Facebook LIKES. 

Year Four, Sport Card Collectors blog grew to  483,217 overall views,  4,494 Followers on Twitter and 431 Facebook LIKES. 

Year Five, Sport Card Collectors blog grew to 679,331 overall views. 5,325 Twitter Followers and 541 Facebook LIKES.

Year Six, Sport Card Collectors blog grew to 952,540 overall views. 6,272 Twitter Followers and 627 Facebook LIKES.

Year Seven, Sport Card Collectors blog grew to 1,268,414 overall views. 7,120 Twitter Followers and 815 Facebook LIKES.
 
MANY HAVE SAID BLOGGING IS DEAD. YOU MUST GO TO PODCASTS NOW. Well, looking at my numbers, I had the biggest increase ever on this blog. To me, I would rather sit down and read a three to five minute post then listen to a three hour podcast or watch a video just as long just to see a part or two that may interest me. Which is why I don't listen to Podcasts or watch live videos. Blogging is not dead doubters, it is still very alive and well.

I was surprised how well Facebook has grown however. I only post my links on there now and occasionally will put up interaction posts. I used to interact more, but it felt the more I interacted, the likes went down. I will always answer messages on there for people with questions which I get a ton of but mainly if I will buy their collection, No, No I won't, or what value something is which I tell them how to locate themselves. I don't have time for that.

I finally reached 7,000 followers on Twitter and heading towards 10,000. At least I hope. Twitter is my biggest reach for this blog and for most of my collecting needs such as trading. I try to post new threads on there when I can think of a good one. Feedback on the last few has gone great. But, I have also had many, many, many duds.

I have had many highlights that I am very proud of among the seven years as a blogger, including being named a 3-time Panini Player Of The Day Blog Champion (2 years co-winner), receiving a tremendous UDRAK (Upper Deck Random Acts Of Kindness) for all that I give back to the hobby, and finishing second out of hundreds of blogs for the 2014 Blog Of The Year in the Bip Award and finishing second place in The #HasAVote #BestBlogger Hobby All-Star Award On CollectorSaurus Site. I finally won a Blog Of The Year contest beating out many great ones in 2017 claiming the first ever Best Sport Collecting Blog award from GoGTS Live/ Beckett #Fatpacks. Not to mention being contacted by Pawn Stars to help spread the word on them. That alone was pretty awesome.

I have also had a 4200+ view day on here as well, which far exceeds my average of now 600 but even this number has gone up double since last year. Another proud moment is also never missing ONE SINGLE POST DAY on here in 7 years even after some tough health years. I have totaled over 3850 published posts and feel I have accomplished a lot for something I did on a whim.

Before I close up today's post, I want to say a few thanks as well to those who have played a role in the success of Sport Card Collectors.

It's a very nice community to be apart of and one that I hope to get to know more of and be more apart of this year.

I wanted to also take a minute to thank all of the new traders I have added in 2018. All of you helped support my hobby addiction in another year I couldn't afford to do much in. Thank you.

I also wanted to give Wes from formerly the JBF blog, formerly the Area 40 blog and formerly known as the symbol his own paragraph here. What he did for me in 2018, other than being a good friend to lean on and talk with, was incredible. I was left speechless many times and amazed at the same time. Incredible person and incredible friend. Thanks brother.

SCC 6-Year Blogversary!

Six years ago today, I started sport card blogging, wow.

Year Six has seen amazing success and huge growth. I have also noticed a jump in my blog followers since the beginning of the year picking up 8 new ones. I haven't seen that many new ones in forever. Thanks for following!

The blog has also grown a lot in 2018 per views. They have doubled per day since the end of 2017 going into 2018 with my new writing revamp. I hope you guys can also tell the difference with longer posts, tips on collecting, an inside look at my collecting and pieces of my past with pictures, relics and toys.
