CARDBOARD REVIEW:2020 Topps Heritage Baseball

Welcome to 1971! Well, a look at what a card design looked like in 1971.

Last year we saw Heritage take on the 1970 design and today we dig in 1971, the dark year. Once again, I am talking about baseball cards.

When seeing mockups for the design I was worried about having a black border like that on cards again. I could see chipping issues galore!

But, would I feel that way after I opened the box? Well, read on to see my thoughts.

In every hobby box of 2020 Topps Heritage baseball, there are 24 packs of 9 cards. There is one hit per box either autograph or relic and boxes currently sit at $70 or so.

Each box also comes with 1 buyback box topper

Here is what my pack had. PC add. So can't complain.

BASE:
Like I said earlier, the base card design tackles 1971 design in spectacular fashion. I also must mention now that I didn't run into any dinged corners but that doesn't mean with this design that there won't be any.

There is also a whopping 500 cards in the base set including Sp's. That's insane for a product from today. I didn't say it was a bad insane either for those set chasers that still exist this is heaven.
Those darn short prints are out again to make us blind. Here is the back of the base card Pujols which tells us the CMP code ends in 13 which means base.

HOWEVER, a big HOWEVER, this years version labels the variations on the back of the card just below the name. If only I had known that before hand I wouldn't have wasted my time looking at the CMP codes. You still have to turn the card over to see what you have, but, that's easier to read than the code.

If you still want the codes to help you decipher what you have, here they are,
  • Base cards 1-400 are 13
  • Base SP cards 401-500 are #27
  • French Text  have a #40
  • Error has a #44
  • Missing Signature has a #45
  • Silver Team Name has #46
  • Action Image has #47
  • Throwback has #48
  • Nickname has #49
BASE SP's
Here were the Sp's I found in my box. These fall 1:3 packs.

 CMP CODE on the back.

Here's a couple of my favorite base cards in the set
My first Cole in a Yanks uniform

And this photo of Judge is superb!

Along with some great photos, there are a few subsets as well.

Such as teams celebrating World Series wins and LCS wins. They are just missing the Yankees celebrating.....

 League Leaders

Rookies

Rookie Cups

BASE CARD VARIATIONS
Falling at 1:27, easiest to find of the variations, was this Action Photo.  Luckily for me out of all of them I landed this guy...

 Mike stinkin' Trout!

CMP is 47

BASE CARD PARALLELS
There is two parallels to find White which is limited to 50 copies and Flip Stock which is to 5 copies and to my surprise I found one that is 1:67 packs
White Parallel

Base and Parallel side by side. I think the black looks better.

INSERTS
25 of the leagues youngest talent is here in New Age Performers. Found that Vlad guy here.

Flashbacks has 15 cards to collect and commemorates things that happened at that time.

20 Giants has well, 20 cards.

Then and Now has 15 cards to chase as well.

HITS:
The odds of hitting an autograph card from this product is astronomical, at least in my opinion. A box that doesn't pass by where I don't land a relic from this product and I did once again with a familiar face. This will make the 5th Pujols relic I have pulled in the past year from a one-hit product.
At least this time it's  a bat swatch. I also dig the design.

Other hits not found in my box but could be in yours includes,
  • Base Chrome
  • Base Mini Set
  • Real One Autographs
  • Real One Dual Autographs
  • Real One Triple Autographs
  • Senators Final Season Autographs
  • Cut Signatures
  • Clubhouse Collection Autograph Relics
  • Clubhouse Collection Dual Autograph Relics
  • Flashbacks Autograph Relics
  • Clubhouse Collection Dual Relics
  • Clubhouse Collection Triple Relics
  • Clubhouse Collection Quad Relics
  • 1971 Mint Relics
  • 1971 U.S. Postage Stamp Relics
OVERALL:I was actually quite impressed with my break. Nice Trout find, Pujols white, even a Pujols relic. Probably the best break I have had of the product by far.

I do like this years design as the black really makes the color photos pop and the insert themes keeping that throughout is great as well.

If you have collected Heritage in the past and are a fan, I don't think you will be disappointed by this years. I like this years a lot.

Thanks to Topps for providing me this box to review and to giveaway some of the cards on Twitter. You can check out Topps website HERE. And find them on FACEBOOK  and TWITTER as well! Don't forget to give them a follow on each!

WHAT'S IN THE BOX?!:World Series 2003

Well, some of you asked and now you will all receive. The newest round of What's In The Box is here!

New box, new items. This is a handcrafted box was something I made  in graded school. Nothing fancy, but the only thing I have ever made. I am far from a handyman, ask my sports I know it. Ask my to put a nail in the wall, watch out.

Anyways this box has been hoarding some items over the years, assumingly all sports, and I stumbled upon it recently so let's take a dig.

Today's item is a paper Post Card that's from Radio Shack focusing on the 2003 World Series. One, that I wished I could forget as the Florida Marlins took down the heavily favored NY Yankees in six games.

I can't remember how I got these, maybe I swung in or maybe they arrived in the mail, not sure, but a pretty cool MLB authenticated item none-the-less.

Here is the front:
The back:

A closer look at the back with the MLB authentication sticker.

Thoughts today's return of What's In The Box?! and the item I found today is welcomed in comments.

WINNER Of The World Series Contest!

First, I must say congrats to this years World Series winners the Kansas City Royals! I must admit after the Yankees lost, this was the team I wanted to win. Of course that increased after I found out their opponent was the Mets ;)

In the end, we had two players out of the four that were left in our World Series contest that hit a Home Run. So it came down to these two......

Jeff Hoyle March 22, 2015 at 12:09 PM. David Wright
vs
The bowl cut kid March 22, 2015 at 3:20 PM. Alex Gordon

And the winner if their was a tie was going to be decided by who had the player on the winning team and since the Royals won, so didn't The bowl cut kid.

CONGRATS TO The bowl cut kid on his victory!!

Please email your address to sportcardcollectors@hotmail.com and I will get your address passed onto BCW Supplies as well. You will have 7 days from today to claim your prize.

Thanks to everyone that entered. This was a really fun contest to see which players would remain in the end. I was surprised by some that survived for so long. Maybe we can do this again next year.

World Series Finalists And Contest Announced!

Now that the stage is set for the World Series between the Royals and Mets, let's take a look at who remains in the running for prizes in my World Series Contest I took entries for in March.

The bowl cut kidMarch 22, 2015 at 3:20 PM.
Alex Gordon

JupiterhillMarch 31, 2015 at 4:00 PM. Salvador Perez

BarryMarch 21, 2015 at 4:34 PMMy pick, Yoenis Cespedes

Jeff HoyleMarch 22, 2015 at 12:09 PM. David Wright

Now onto how to win it all. It's simple, the player who hits the most Home Runs in the Series wins the prize lot! If there is a tie, the person who has the player on the winning World Series team wins. If that doesn't work, an all out random on random.org will be ran.

Good luck to those who remain.

The Remaining Contestants Of The 2015 World Series Contest

We are down to the final three teams in the MLB World Series run. One team, the NY Mets, have already clinched their way in. The other two teams, the Royals and Bluejays are battling it out to find out who will represent the AL. I am still shocked by the teams that made the playoffs and who might be in the World Series. Honestly, other than Mets fans, who picked the Mets to get in??!!

Well, it seems in this contest that one at least did. Cespedes I won't count since he wasn't a Met from the start.

But here are the only contestants that remain in the running after 46 entered.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN! Need a Royals win to secure a spot for the prizes.

Alex Gordon

Salvador Perez

IN IT TO WIN IT! Locked in a spot to win! Will announce the rest of the contest rules when the Royals/Blue Jays series ends.

My pick, Yoenis Cespedes

David Wright

Good luck to those that remain in this contest. Make sure you pay attention to the upcoming post on what happens when the World Series starts.

I must also thank the 42 others who entered. This was by far the best turnout I have ever had in a contest.

CONTEST!! World Series Predictor!

It's almost that time of year. The smell of freshly cut grass. The crack of a bat. Diving catches and one team winning a trophy. Yup, you guess it, it's almost time for baseball!

A few years ago, I ran a World Series contest where I had the people who entered draft a team they thought would win and at the end of the World Series the person who picked the winning team would score a prize lot. I have decided to bring back something very similar to that contest but switched up how to enter.

First off, let me give you the run down on the prizes!

We kick it off with 1991 Leaf Gold Rookies including Mo Vaughn, Ryan Klesko and Mike Mussina

A few 90's inserts and a cool Ted Williams insert from 2015 Topps baseball

If you are like me, you like shiny things. Well, here are some!

I already have this card, but, it was still hard to let go but I did anyways. Someone will enjoy it as much as I do.

And a cool Victor Martinez jersey card. I call it cool because to the naked eye, my pic doesn't show the small tear in the jersey. That's pretty cool to me!

And these unopened packs.

And finally, there will be a nice BCW SUPPLIES prize pack added as well. Here it is now updated!

Now onto how to enter for ONE person to win ALL of the prizes listed above!

  1. MUST be a U.S. RESIDENT or have an address in the U.S. I can ship the prize to enter! Sorry about this but shipping costs are crazy and I am far from being rich lol.
  2. Pick out one MLB hitter from any team. Once a player is selected, you cannot choose that player again. It will be a first come, first serve type of deal.
  3. If the player you choose ends up in the World Series, you will be in the running for the prizes above. A new contest will begin when the World Series begins. If your player doesn't make it to the World Series, then you are eliminated. If, for some reason none of the players make it to the World Series, I will random all entrants for the prize.
  4. Remember to try and not pick a bench player just to make it to the World Series. I may use the player you have chosen in the World Series portion of the contest.
  5. Deadline to enter is April 5th 2015 right before the Opening Day game.
Good luck to all that enter. This should be a challenging contest to pick players for because you just never know which teams will make it.

PS: I would like to ask bloggers to share this contest on their blogs and for everyone to RT on Twitter and Share on Facebook.

Winner Of October's Pack Gambler Contest

A decent turnout for what is one of the final three contests I will be running with The Pack Gambler as he is taking an absence from the hobby for awhile. It is always sad when a good guy leaves, but sometimes circumstances pop up where you have to make the tough decisions.

So let's get to something a bit more positive, the winner. There were a few of you that chose San Fran to win but only one was close to the total score of 15. Congrats to Tony Ragsdale who chose San Fran and had the closest total score with his pick of 12.

Tony, email me at sportcardcollectors@hotmail.com with your address and I will pass on the info. You have won the following:

Thanks to all that participated and to The Pack Gambler for providing the prizes. Congrats again to the winner and remember if you didn't win, still a couple more Pack Gambler contests to come along with the others I am running right now. You can find those contests on the right side of the blog.

Good luck to all on future contests!
