The Low Budget Collector Part 6:Contests

I know, I know, this one should be the most obvious of this series, but I have to bring it up just in case you don't enter them or maybe really don't know of them or know why they can be important.

Contests can play a major role in a Low Budget collectors way of collecting. Contests can be entered to win a prize for yourself or can be used for trade bait for others.  I enter contests for both occasions but most of the time the winnings are ones I enter for myself.

I have won some prizes big and small but all have helped me build my collection the past couple of years that I have struggled with funds. It also keeps something going in the mail box so you don't get down about collecting. I completely get how tough it can be not to see any cards incoming. So even if it's just one card, it's better than none.

One thing I need to mention about contests also is I don't enter them all. I only enter the ones that help my PC or that I can use for trade bait. I don't feel like I should enter the contests that have absolutely no meaning to me. What's the point? Just to win free stuff? Nope, that's not me. Save those cards in the contests for someone who actually collects them or needs them.

The most important thing about contests is not just about the entering/winning, it's about the giving. I have felt the generosity pour out from this hobby over the last couple of years so I do my best to give even more back to the hobby that has given to me. That's a very important final piece to this. I have been doing my giveaways for years now and can tell you there is no better feeling when someone gets a surprise mail day from you and you can just tell you made their day. :)

In closing to sum this up, contests are a fun way to keep your collecting moving forward to help add cards to your collection with no cost which is always good for a low budget collector. Of course you do have to win first as well but sometimes the entering and losing can be just as entertaining as it's like ripping a pack of cards and hoping to beat the odds. To me, there is no greater thrill in the hobby than that.

I hope Part 6 of this will help you in some way today to keep on collecting no matter the circumstance. This is the point of these posts and even though some may be obvious like this one, it will hopefully still get you in the right direction without wanting to quit the hobby. I am also hoping it may give you a new way to save money and collect.

Breakin Wax:Cryptozoic Penny Dreadful Season 1 (GIVEAWAY)

Early image releases of this product had me hooked immediately, the unique memorabilia pieces, the design and layout of it

For those of you who don't watch the show, here is a little background info on what it's about.

Most of us are familiar with classic literary characters like Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. This show goes in depth with those and other characters by exploring their origin stories in this thriller that takes place in the dark corners of Victorian London.

Sir Malcolm is an explorer who lost his daughter to the city's "creatures", and he will do whatever is needed to get her back and to right past wrongs. He is accompanied by Vanessa Ives in his search for his daughter Vanessa knows they need all the help they can get and recruits American Ethan Chandler in the search for Malcolm's daughter and to take care of some monsters along the way.

In every box of Penny Dreadful Season 1, there are 24 packs with 5 cards per pack. You will also find two hits, one on-card autograph and one wardrobe card per box with some providing an extra hit (like this one), Boxes will run you roughly $80.




(Before going on I must note that my blog was being a bit stupid this morning so I had to use bullets in order to center my pictures, my OCD was being pushed to it's outer limits but it works)

Base cards like with all of Cryptozoic's base are done really well. High gloss and full action pictures. No border besides a base one at the bottom and everyone knows how much I dig that.

Couldn't find info on the foil parallels, but here they are. When I find out about them, I will update this.

Tarot (1:32 packs). I pulled two and beat the odds. These are very thick and very cool

Etchings (1:4 packs). Very nice spooky classic design. Fits the shows theme.

 Wardrobe cards (1:24 packs). There are some amazing swatches in this product. This one in particular BULGES out from the card. I had to put the flash on my phone to capture it. There are other unique swatches to find too.

Overall, a fun product. I like the base cards, the inserts are well designed and a good autograph checklist. Most of all, some incredible memorabilia pieces like no other. If you are a fan of the show, you need these. Even if you are not, I would say give them a try and add something a bit different to your collection especially if you are a non-sport card collector.

Wrestling For My Life Book Review And GIVEAWAY!!

 

For those of us who like to read and may be feeling a bit down, a faith based book as Wrestling For My Life is a key pick-me-up.

When you think of Christian athletes you hear names like Russell Wilson and Tim Tebow, but did you know that Shawn Michaels is one as well. I didn't. That alone was a reason to pick-up this book as I was intrigued by that thought. I always look at wrestlers as mean as they come but there is another side of them.

In Wrestling for My Life, Shawn Michaels opened up about his days in being in the WWE and the many different struggles he went through. He began the book by sharing how he became addicted to pain pills after suffering from extreme pain from his injuries in wrestling. He admitted that some days he took up to thirty-five pills a day. Which you would imagine from the hits, trips and falls they take that some would be needed. But, obviously that amount is a bit much.

His wife, Rebecca prayed daily that God would come rescue her husband and set him free. That moment came when his two year old son, Cameron crawled up on him while he was resting after taking a few pain pills and said, “Daddy’s tired”.  Sometimes even the littlest things can lead you in the right direction. Especially if it involves your kids.

Shawn then was led by the Lord to find a local church to attend in Cornerstone. He began to increase his knowledge in God by joining in on a Bible study group as well and surrounding himself with supporting Christian friends. Soon enough he was led to salvation by asking Jesus into his heart and was saved. After doing that, his life began to change as the addiction went away and he began to work in a Christian ministry working with various Churches, charities and organizations.

It's simply amazing how God can turn your life around when all you have to do is find Him. Sometimes He finds you in amazing ways like with Shawn and through his son.

There is a lot more to this book that I won't give all away including an amazing photo gallery in the middle. I would recommend this book to everyone. It's a great read from cover to cover and to see the changes that God made in Shawn's life was amazing. I will say however if you like Wrestling, hunting, family and faith, you are covered here.

The Remaining Contestants Of The 2015 World Series Contest

We are down to the final three teams in the MLB World Series run. One team, the NY Mets, have already clinched their way in. The other two teams, the Royals and Bluejays are battling it out to find out who will represent the AL. I am still shocked by the teams that made the playoffs and who might be in the World Series. Honestly, other than Mets fans, who picked the Mets to get in??!!

Well, it seems in this contest that one at least did. Cespedes I won't count since he wasn't a Met from the start.

Here is our Twelfth entry into the NY Giants/Panini America Promo Contest!

REVIEW: 4 Mini Box Break of Topps UFC Bloodlines 2012

We were randomly selected to be an Ambassador of this product. I found it as an opportunity to be able to review another sport and possibly expand our fan base. This is a sport I don't know a lot about..but have done some research on and see how popular it is. I think being selected to be the Ambassador for me was great because I can give a real honest opinion haven't ever really opening much UFC before. I have busted some in the past however because the temptation is always there to try something new. But not this product. It was loaded with hits and a ton of fun. We will be doing a giveaway from the product as we promised to Topps! Stay tuned below

And since this product hasn't hit the shelves yet either...it feels great to get our hands onto it before anyone else!

Box Breakdown:

• Each Hobby Box contains (10) Mini-Boxes. Each Mini-Box contains (2) Base Cards, (1) Base Parallel Card, (1) Insert Card, and (1) Hit!
• Every Box contains (2) Relics, (2) Jumbo or Dual Relics, (1) Manufactured Relic, and (2) Autograph Relics!
• Around $175 a Hobby box.

BASE CARDS: I like the simplicity of the design. There is no border which is usually typical for a Topps brand and thats a reason why I like this design. The name stands out at the bottom with a nice elegant small border around it. The back design speaks UFC to me. And the fighter jumps off from the card.

INSERTS:The parallels I think lack a little. They are all numbered but I think they should have given them a little silver cardboard look. I do like the Fighting Forefathers cards design that fall 1:3

RELIC CARDS: I have seen Twitter and Facebook loaded with these but they look so much better in person. We pulled an awesome oversize swatch of Anderson Silva which looks great and the Bloodlines dual relic came with a sick swatch of Cain Velasquez.

 

 

AUTOGRAPH CARDS:Once again the design for this product stays true throughout and I like the auto relic cards as well. I know some argue sticker autos are ugly..but not in this case. I do hope however some of the swatches are more color than just single color. I think landing a multicolor swatch on that design would look very nice.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Overall this looks like a winner from my standpoint. The price is a little steep but the cards look very nice. And you have a shot at some really nice auto booklets with multiple signatures on them. Not to mention printing plates and other finds. There are also parallels to some of the auto and jersey cards. Some boxes could bring a ton of value with a great checklist of fighters.

SPORT CARD COLLECTORS FINAL PLAYER OF THE DAY CONTEST

We have been trying to plan out this finale for awhile now...how do we end such a wonderful run? What can we do that could challenge everyone? We decided a true tough challenge was needed. But...we have thought of something with a few steps instead...but first things first. But most importantly with these prize envelopes we have mailed out at least 9 of these and yet to be contacted on those about a GOLDEN TICKET find. Hopefully everyone has checked these over well. We don't know where or how our friend stuck them in there.So that means that 3 out of the 5 of you COULD be getting a GOLDEN TICKET.  But remember that you must be entered this week to qualify. Don't know how many of these envelopes we have left..but we will check on them and additional people could be awarded. It was a guessing game at the start of how many of these we would need. We do have enough..possibly more than we need. All will have to be awarded in order to get the GOLDEN TICKETS out there to all of you! Like I said, it will have to be checked on.

Now onto this weeks prize...we have also yet to be contacted for a GOLDEN TICKET on these so make sure you are checking your packages closely like we stated above we don't know how or where they were put into these prizes. We have been though very patient in waiting to see who gets them. So there is a BIG possibility that this may be the grandest of grand finales. There could be a GOLDEN TICKET in here. So we need to do something bigger.
