Breakin' Wax:1995 Skybox Impact Football

My final box break thanks to Shane over at Project Pedro Blog, comes the action packed Skybox Impact!

I remember going to Ames once a week and finding some packs of this to open in the car. I also found some at the local pharmacy as well.

It's a product I have come to try and build a master set of. As anyone who knows how hard it is to build a master set, building one from the 90's is even more challenging.

But, I will get there.

Let's see how my final box went from Shane.

 

In this box of 1995 Skybox Impact, I got to open 36 packs of 12 cards. There are inserts aplenty in the product!

I should note before going on, this wasn't a very fun box to open only because the cards were bricks sadly. But, I did manage through and not too many cards were damaged.

The base card set features decent photography and a touch of foil on the players first name. There are 200 cards to collect in the base set including veterans

Rookies

Super Bowl subset

Jags and Panthers innagural season subset

Super Sophs subset

And The Specialists subset.

The inserts was where it was at for me. I still have mine from 1995 and have been adding to it ever since.

Impact Power inserts fell 1:3 packs. These were all dupes here

And these were new to my set chase. There are 30 to chase in all.

My favorite insert was this Countdown to Impact cards that fell 1:20 packs. I beat the odds here with those. There are 10 of these to collect and i like the fact the numbers on the card are embossed. I am slowly creeping towards the set. The Deion I had, but Barry I needed.

 

And finally, Fox Same Game, More Attitude cards fell 1:9 packs and have 15 cards to collect. This is another one I am creeping towards. A couple of these were set dupes.

Well, that does it for the box breaks from Shane. Thanks goes out to Shane for the trade and hopefully we can keep our tradition alive again this year and do it again.

This newest segment about the 90's will focus on my set chases (the ones I have already used for a Origins Post or don't plan on using) and new additions to them along with updates on how far I have gotten.

In 1995, Skybox Impact had these all foil Impact Power inserts that fell 1:3 packs. The first 10 cards of the 30 card set are defense while the last 20 cover the offense. Thanks to Brian I was able to knock a good handful down.

I now have 11 of the 30 so a mountain to climb on this set still but today's star power was a huge help towards my goal.

We are counting down to Impact! Sounds like some dirty sets doesn't it?

Countdown To Impact was inserted into 1995 Skybox Impact and is a pretty simple design card or at least appears that way. The seconds on the cards are actually embossed which drew me right in. I only ever pulled one in my youth so I have a ways to go with this set especially since they fell 1:30 packs.

Variety Of Cardboard

It doesn't take very much to catch my attention when it comes to 90's cards. Well, late 90's cards. To be quite honest, anything before 1995 in the 1990-1994 range scares me. Yes, I fear the junk wax era.

But, anything from 1995-1999 I will always keep an eye out on. When I saw someone post about about a 1995 Fleer Aerial Assault card, I started a conversation on how I am chasing the set. That's when @J1Burris sent me a DM on Twitter that he may be able to help me with that.

Even though he didn't find any of those, he did pass along some other great stuff.

Topps, I remember this card like it was yesterday.

 Same goes for this one. bought a ton of Impact back in the day.

 Absolutely dig this one.

 I have seen lots of Crash The Games in front of me, but never Kerry. Now it's mine.

 I am building this set as well. I do have Collins, but glad now I have a copy to stick in my PC to.

One of my favorite products in 1995 was Skybox Premium. Now I can add this card towards my set and my PC

 There was a Kerry Collins rookie in the first series of Ultra and in the second.

Like I said, I am building this set but I do have this one as well. I never mind doubles from this era though.

 One of my favorite all-time RB's, well besides Rodney and Barry, TD!!

Ike Hilliard gold medallion. Other than the 1995 Gold Medallions, this was my favorite design when it came to that popular parallel.

Sets Of My Childhood THE SERIES! Part 16:1997 Skybox Impact Boss

Sets Of My Childhood THE SERIES is a spinoff from just a want list. I decided not only would I make a want list of each of the sets I am chasing in a tab, but I thought a little breakdown and feature may help get me more set help. I am sure many of the sets I am seeking are nickel and dime type of cards so I am hoping my trader friends can be on the lookout for any I don't have.

Can't believe we are at post 16 in this series. Once again, we will take a look at another football set but I do promise other sports do exist in this series but football was my main and still is collecting sport. Today we take a glance at an insert from Skybox Impact in 1997 that was the BOSS.

 

At 1:6 packs in 1997 Skybox Impact, you could find these super colorful embossed inserts.  The 20 card set had both rookies and veterans in it. So far my only haves are the three rookies, so I have a long ways to go. 

I am not sure what caught my attention or still catches my attention about these, but something does. It's not something I would have been into today as much but being apart of my cardboard history and the embossing kinda gets me, I am on the chase for the rest!

Making An Impact In 1995

Since Skybox Premium made such an impression on me, I just had to give its brother release Impact a try when I saw it on the shelves at Ames. I loved running those necessity errands with my parents.


The product fit right into every aspect of my collecting at the time. The base cards had foil, the inserts were attractive, there were rookie cards and most importantly, 12-card packs were $1.29.

This 200-card set, one I believed I completed back then but don't have now, had action packed photos

 

 

 

and some subtle inserts like Specialists that takes up cards 149-158, 

 

Super Sophs with cards 159-168,

 

 

and Impact Rookies with cards 169-198. The final two cards were checklists.

 

The inserts were really fun for a low-end feeling brand.

Impact Power Cards fell 1:3 packs and were all-foil

 

 

 Fox Same Game, More Attitude Cards fell 1:9 packs and had some embossing on the words More Attitude.

Countdown to Impact cards fell 1:20 packs and was probably my favorite of the group with it's color scheme and embossing of the numbers.

 

Other inserts were Future Hall of Fame cards that fell 1:60 packs and Skymotion Exchange card that fell 1:360 packs. These two I never pulled.

It wasn't just Skybox Impact that made an impact on me in 1995, but it was sports and sports cards that did as well. I guess it was my way of getting into manhood from being a child. As the year was closing, my afternoon cartoons and Saturday Morning cartoon watching began to decline at a high rate. My extra time when not sorting sports cards or being at school was playing sports with my friends and father and watching that on television instead.

As we make our way into 1996, we will see how much more impact that this hobby made on me and some other life changes helped mold more involvement of the hobby in my life.
