BLOG CROSSOVER EVENT 1: Million Dollar Idea

I watch more TV than I should, but it keeps me centered in my life.

I watch it while I blog, while I sort cards, while I do house chores or simply when I have a few minutes of downtime.

One of my favorite things to watch is when shows do crossover episodes. These kinds of episodes occur when they are trying to either get the word out on the new shows or trying to keep them from continuing to falter. since they can't match the original.

For example, there are multiple NCIS shows and sometimes they will crossover three of them into one extended episode starting with the key show because that first show had always carried the weight. Now it's time to help NCIS Sydney and NCIS Hawaii.

I thought, hey, I run three blogs with two that are kind of struggling, why not do a blog crossover event? It's something that no blogger has done before...at least I don't think it's been done so that would be a fun creative idea as well.

So, here is how this will work. I am showing off my latest mail day from Reader Oren. I will post some of the mail day here, move onto Cards Over Coffee for Part 2 before finishing it up at Big Blue Cardboard for Part 3. 

In order for you to see the full mail day you will have to read all three blogs on three different days.

First, let's see how this one goes while we examine my latest mail day from Oren.

In the Sport Card Collectors part of the mail day, I am showing off the 1997 Fleer Million Dollar Moments cards. These cards fell 1 in every pack and were spread across multiple products from 1997 and early 1998 and sports. Each sport had 50 cards to chase, and each offered a chance to win a Million Dollars.

In order to win the Million, you must complete the 50-card set. Sounds easy, but it wasn't Cards 46-50 were all short printed with one of the cards rumored to only have one copy. Meaning, it's a 1/1.

I didn't find that particular card in this lot from Oren, but here are the ones I did find,

 

As far as anyone knows, there wasn't a one-million-dollar winner announced for any of the sports. I would assume that tough to find 1/1 card is still out there. Maybe a collector even has it and doesn't know it. Maybe some collectors thought these were trash and tossed them. Guess we will never know.

All I know is that we don't offer this kind of fun chases anymore.

I wished.

Trending This Week In My Hobby Week 3

 

Week 3 kicks us off with a lot of movement as some fell out of the Top 10 and others moved in. Let's check it out.

This week nostalgia and the NFL offseason is driving my hobby. And out of nowhere the GOAT of basketball is appearing on my list. I have added a couple of cards recently including a HUGE one of the legend. Not A Hockey Card Collector, But....

Normally, when you think of hockey card collectors, you don't think of me.

But there are moments I have where I break down and buy some hockey and there is usually a good reasonable explanation behind it.

So when I saw the latest Metal Universe product release, I had to try some. Despite my wife giving me "the look" when I stuck a box of hockey cards at the register.

 

You know the one.

I still stuck with it despite it and opened up the $30 blaster box that came with 5 packs of 7 cards.

Nostalgia still is the driving force of my hobby.

The base card design is the typical metal look and I like that Upper Deck stuck with the basics.

Each pack that I opened came with a Blue Spectrum parallel. These typically fall 1:2 packs.

I am not complaining about getting one in every pack though. I really like the look of these.

When it comes to the nostalgia I mentioned above, It was brought with the 1:4 pack finds of the 1997-98 throwback inserts.

Amped Up insert falls 1:10 packs.

Skybox Premium Prospects fall 1:4 packs. I have no idea if this is a good player or not. 

I also pulled the Sapphire Parallel that falls 1:6 packs (once again not sure how good this player is).

And my final cool card of the box was Big Man On Ice. This was actually my first insert pull of the box and falls 1:8 packs. As a by-far-distant NY Rangers fan, I know this name.

There wasn't a lot of value in the break, but it certainly was a lot of fun and I would love to do it again if I can find the funds and try to avoid getting the look again.

The Latest

I haven't made a lot of trades this year like I have in years past, at least in the variety of traders I use. But, I have made some and even those some have backed me up with posts on the blog to do.

As I try to get my mind in the right place with blogging, I am still undecided on my future with it still and the direction I will take, I still have lots to post about regardless if anyone is reading these posts or not. September was a brutal month for numbers on this blog despite my new direction for it which is not a good sign of it's future. September both views (especially views) and comments took a BIG DIP. I am not talking a few here and there, I am talking a ton. Comparing August and September on there, there was a 17,000 view difference and in terms of comments, that was cut in half. It's the kind of thing that drives you away some. It's probably the main reason I jumpstarted Cards Over Coffee back up again, knowing if I am not going to get the views or comments anyways, I might as well continue on with that blog.

Which by the way, if you haven't checked out Cards Over Coffee in awhile, it not only has a new jazzy look but has some new posts. I am still in the process of adding new content, a new look and more fun over there. Check out that blog HERE. Please add it to your blogrolls, use it in your blog posts when you refer to me, etc. Those posts take me hours to do so the more traffic to check it out, the better.

In the meantime for now, let's check out a new post on here and from blog reader Oren who happens to be the person who I have traded with the most this year.

A couple for the non sport PC.

I have always liked Kurt, his passion for the game and for his faith is someone worth looking up to. Not to mention his backstory which will soon be a movie.

90's inserts. I never complain about getting these, the more, the merrier.

Another nice Martin relic for that side PC. Think I have 4 of them now.

And finally...yes, I always save the best for last...

 

Batman Forever Built For Speed. Best card in my Batman PC currently. If any of you are sitting on any Batman cards that are collecting dust, I will send you my address :)

Breakin' Wax:1995 Skybox Impact Football

My final box break thanks to Shane over at Project Pedro Blog, comes the action packed Skybox Impact!

I remember going to Ames once a week and finding some packs of this to open in the car. I also found some at the local pharmacy as well.

It's a product I have come to try and build a master set of. As anyone who knows how hard it is to build a master set, building one from the 90's is even more challenging.

But, I will get there.

Let's see how my final box went from Shane.

 

In this box of 1995 Skybox Impact, I got to open 36 packs of 12 cards. There are inserts aplenty in the product!

I should note before going on, this wasn't a very fun box to open only because the cards were bricks sadly. But, I did manage through and not too many cards were damaged.

The base card set features decent photography and a touch of foil on the players first name. There are 200 cards to collect in the base set including veterans

Rookies

Super Bowl subset

Jags and Panthers innagural season subset

Super Sophs subset

And The Specialists subset.

The inserts was where it was at for me. I still have mine from 1995 and have been adding to it ever since.

Impact Power inserts fell 1:3 packs. These were all dupes here

And these were new to my set chase. There are 30 to chase in all.

My favorite insert was this Countdown to Impact cards that fell 1:20 packs. I beat the odds here with those. There are 10 of these to collect and i like the fact the numbers on the card are embossed. I am slowly creeping towards the set. The Deion I had, but Barry I needed.

 

And finally, Fox Same Game, More Attitude cards fell 1:9 packs and have 15 cards to collect. This is another one I am creeping towards. A couple of these were set dupes.

Well, that does it for the box breaks from Shane. Thanks goes out to Shane for the trade and hopefully we can keep our tradition alive again this year and do it again.

Chopping The Grass-Roots

Probably the closest to a memorabilia card I will ever get in my Hampton collection since he doesn't have any, the 1996 Leaf Grassroots insert was covered with felt like like turf on a field. The player in the forefront was vibrant with color. Makes for one cool looking insert.

Insert odds for these were 1:4, but being serial numbered to 5,000 might have made them a bit tougher pull in the product. I was fortunate enough to find this card for $1. I will take any Hampton numbered card for that price any day.

Random Card On My Desk:1994 Fleer All-Star Game John Burkett

Fleer Team Leader

It's another day and another new Hampton add. Like I said, I added a ton of newbies way back in 2016 but never got to post them.

Today's addition came through a trade but I don't remember from who now. See how sad it is when you don't get things published right away???

Back in 1992, Fleer released these Team Leader inserts for baseball, basketball and football. These were randomly inserted in packs. So it's really hard to judge how actually tough it was to land one but I doubt they were that tough. Early 90's inserts were much easier to acquire.

The design is simple, but it's perfect. Black framed color action photo looks fantastic.

The 90's Are Here

Last week, I was sent a big box full of 90's goodness from the great @imqualifying who knows how much of a 90's card geek I am. I don't care what sport, what team or what players it is. I love it all. Even the non sport stuff. I mainly enjoy the 95-99 stuff the most but a few of the older inserts are nice as well.

The 90's as I have stated many times is still my favorite era to collect from. So many cool cards and designs and one company line that continuously put out great stuff was Playoff. Just look at these 1998 Absolute rookie cards. I like the McQuarters who was a big player in the Giants Super Bowl 42 run.

 

Draft Pick inserts from 1998 Playoff Prestige. The regular version of these is silver and fell 1:9 packs while the parallels that are shown here, were found in retail and special retail pack and boxes. I think the colored are much more impressive looking. Speaking of looking, it seems I have a start of a Shehee rainbow....

 

Mr. Ryan Leaf. Everyone's favorite bad draft pick example.

 

And Germane Crowell. I dig the minor embossing on these as well.

 

My final card to show off today, is a 1998 Playoff Momentum End zone Xpress Ryan Leaf which is cool in many ways. It's printed on plastic card stock with lots of rainbow foil and team color blended in. These were found in retail packs at a rate of 1:13 packs. It's not something I ever found in packs so a nice addition to my 90's PC in my opinion.

90's Niche Football Card Blog Trade Part 2:90's Insert Goodness

I posted Part 1 of my trade with 90's Niche Football Card Blog yesterday, today is Part 2. This one is all about the 90's!

Up first, this Digital Replays MotionVision. These things are really cool. Companies don't make anything like this anymore. This is the front cover, it's a CD case.

 

When you open it up, you find a card. These cards when tipped the right way make the player run a play. Really cool. This is of Kerry Collins who was one of my favorite 90's quarterbacks. 

 

Speaking of Collins, even more additions. 

 

More 90's inserts. You have gotta truly appreciate their beauty.

 

Two of my favorite Broncos. A 90's UD hologram to. Those were always rocking!

 

Randy Moss! What a beast he was.  Not that Seau wasn't too.

 

Some of the coolest base cards ever made. Acetate surrounded by cardboard. 

Another one of my favorite 90's QB, Mark Brunell. Loved the year that he led the Jags to the AFC Championship game while upsetting Buffalo and Denver along the way. I thought they would had taken down the Patriots, but sadly couldn't. Probably the last chance the Jags had to make a run like that it seems lol.

 

And finally, Mirror Image. 4 interesting players on this card. Not really sure I would have called them mirror images of each other lol.
