7 Day Trading Card Challenge Day 6:Favorite Non Sport Card

My buddy Tim over at Cardpocalypse, has created a 7 day Trading Card Challenge which has taken the blogosphere by storm.

There is a good variety of topics to cover throughout the challenge so are you up for the challenge? I am.

So let's take a look at Day 6 of the challenge. Favorite non sport card. Man, I could have gone 100 ways with this one as my non sport collection has really grown over the past couple of years. I love adding autographs of my favorite actors and actresses and singers.

But, I will go with cards from a newest non sport chase, my Chevy Chase chase. That doesn't sound right but it's true.

I already showed off my dual relic of Chase and Murray, but there are a couple more I added as well

How about this 6 piece one with lots of super star power from the 70s including one of my wife's used to be crushes in Robert Redford.

Or this 8 piece relic with many legends of comedy all on one card. This one is also a parallel numbered to 25. I had to really talk the seller down on this one and after much back and forth, we agreed on a middle number.

Once again, I am a tad disappointed they didn't use a small face image with the relics when they use most of these people in other parts of the product as actual images.

I am not sure if this is the end of the road with this PC or if I will seek others out. There is still plenty more different ones of these to chase.

Final day of the challenge coming up next time.

Two Of The Best

I am not usually one for Leaf products, especially their sport ones, but I do really like their non sport ones such as Pop Century.

I have been collecting non sport stuff pretty hard over the past couple of years adding what I can when I can especially those that played a role in my life.

Today I feature two of my favorite actors who both played in a film together.

The movie, well, Caddyshack from 1980. The actors, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray.

I have always liked Chevy and all of his movies. Some are better than others, but all give me a chuckle. However, by far,  National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is his best and my Top favorite movie of all time OVER ALL OTHER MOVIES. I would watch it in non holiday times.

As for Bill, I liked some of his movies, not as many as Chevy, but my favorite roles of his is Ghostbusters, Space Jam and especially being the greens keeper in Caddyshack. I had to show my nephew Caddyshack just for Murray's character. It's just too bad he wasn't in the second movie which fell flat to the first in comparison. Though both movies had A+ stars in them.

This Prop Century relic features both Chase and Murray. Not sure what the relics are from, but it's a cool piece to have. I already have a solid Chase PC and this is my first thing for Murray. I wished he had an autograph to chase.

The only thing negative I find about this card other than it not letting me know what the relics are from, is the fact it doesn't have their faces on the front with their swatches. Instead of that award symbol, put their faces above their names. That's all I ask.

Back of the card has no specifics what the wardrobe cards are from other than being authentic. Would have been nice to find out which movie they are from.

I don't think this will be the end of my chase for Chase. I see he has other relic cards in that set with plenty of other stars.

Tis' The Season To Be Mary (Merry)

Christmas means many things to me.

When I was younger, I remember how excited my grandmother got this time of year as she would put up her decorations and we would eat a snack and just sit and enjoy the Christmas lights in her apartment. Occasionally we would take a short walk to town just to check out everyone else lights. It was memories like that I won't ever forget. Especially when we would eat Peanut Butter sandwiches with Butterscotch pudding as our snack on those nights occasionally. That was some special treat for me as a kid. It also sounds like an odd combo, but it's pretty amazing.

At my home in youth, my parents would go out and get a tree the old fashioned way. Right out in the woods and cut it down with a saw. My family wasn't rich so we didn't get much in terms of presents. I think most years I got new underwear, a notebook to write in since that was my hobby and maybe a small toy. Not getting everything I wanted, believe me I saw the Sears catalog and I wanted it all, made me appreciate the small things in life and how to treasure them. I think that's why I treat my cards so well, including base cards, as I do today.

As I got older and started to date a girl in high school, Christmas was a complete opposite of my childhood. Presents filled the tree and the living room of her parents house. We would drive miles to check out the lights and go shopping hours away for hours. It was a huge shift in my life as I didn't experience any of that in my youth.

That went for a few years til we broke up. Not much longer after that I met my wife and  learned the true meaning of Christmas with the Christmas story and the birth of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I won't preach at you guys too much on here as I know most of you don't want to hear it. But, I will say, since I learned about Jesus, it has truly changed my life. The way I look at things, it's better to believe in something in the afterlife than believe you are here and go to the ground. I believe in heaven and can't wait to go home someday. Not yet though. I have much more to live.

For Christmas every year now, we do three Christmas get together with my wife's family and celebrate and gift give in many different ways but with everyone's families so big the gifts are mainly for the children. You start to really appreciate family time when you hit deeper in your 30's and all of the memories you have made and the many more you will make.

Also I decorate the week before Thanksgiving, I know you guys can get snarky with me about forgetting about Thanksgiving but I don't. I have many things to be thankful for and one of them is putting up my lights early. I do wait til Thanksgiving Night to put my tree up and I take everything down the day after Christmas. In between though, some nights just like I did in my youth, I will grab a snack and enjoy the work I just put into decorating and enjoy the Christmas lights while they are up. That's for you grandma!

Out of all of these changes in my lifetime around Christmas, one thing has always remained constant around this time of year and that is National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

Since I was young, my father was a huge Chevy Chase fan probably why I am today, we would watch this movie every year. So to this day, I am still watching this every year if not multiple times a year now and I have shared my love of it with my wife's family who some have grown to enjoy this movie as well.

Over the years I have been adding a few things to my collection from the movie that I enjoy to watch. It's actually my FAVORITE ALL TIME MOVIE that I can quote from beginning to finish.

Over the past few years, my wife has snagged me a couple of shirts that I save and wear on Christmas Eve and Christmas,

Here is a sketch card I won in a contest a few years ago. The iconic scene of Chevy looking through his window dreaming of his in-ground pool.

A Chevy autograph from eBay I traded for. I assume he did a TTM. But, no authenticity other than that.

Then I sent in my own TTM which seems to match the card above. I assume both are real.

I added the movie to my collection,

And even the sequel. Which doesn't have Chevy in it and is headline by Eddie and his wacked out family. It wasn't the greatest movie, but a one time watch doesn't hurt. I have seen it a few times but can't quite get into it like the original. Not sure why they didn't make a real sequel it was by far the best film from the National Lampoons series.

I saw someone post on Facebook that one of the designs this year for the popcorn tins had the movie featured and my wife snagged me one, the last one on the pallet, so I own it now.

But, the one thing I have wanted more than anything for my collection were real, authentic autographs from the movie.

Well, HUGE thanks to @90sNicheFBCard,I was able to do it.

I found out that Randy Quaid had recently signed for Leaf and that got me excited. My original idea was just to add Chevy but can't have Clark Griswold without Cousin Eddie. So here it is. Beautiful card despite his awful signature and yes, that is his real autograph.

Then boom! Fletch Movie autograph of Chevy Chase! I know it's not Christmas Vacation based, but I will take it.
There are definitely other autograph I can add to this from the movie, but they may have to come in many forms and maybe it will be a future project down the road. They may not be cheap.

So happy to finally own authentic autographs of these guys. Thanks Bryan!

As for the movie, I watched it four times this holiday season. Some of my favorite lines from the movie are,

"Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?"

"And why is the carpet all wet, Todddddddd?"

"Grace? She died 30 years ago!"
"Wouldn't be the holiday shopping season if the stores weren't hooter than they—hotter than they are."
"Can't see the line, can you, Russ? "
And about a million more. The whole movie is just one big quote.
I have since passed my love of this movie onto my nephew who comes home every year to watch it with me. I hope he will do the same with others.
So I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Enjoy the memories that will be made today and always make sure to take pictures to capture those moments and spend time with family and loved ones. If you find yourself bored or feeling the need to do something more on this day, go volunteer somewhere like a soup kitchen and you will appreciate the holiday even more.

So "Later dudes! Let 'er rip, hang ten!"

Mail Day Saturday:TTM Chevy Chase (DNA too?)

Once again, another part of my epic Monday mail day. This time it comes in the form of a TTM that I sent out about two weeks ago to the one and only, Chevy Chase. Chevy has always been a fan favorite in my household and someone I have followed since my younger years. Of course if you followed this blog, you would know I am also a National Lampoons Christmas Vacation fanatic. Still the best movie ever made.

I think doing TTM's are fun and I used to do a ton, but after failing time and time again I started to give up. However, recently, I have started to mail a few out and was 2/2 before going 3/3 with this one. It's a good streak I hope to continue.

The one problem I have with sending TTM autographs to actors/actresses is figuring out if they are legit or not. This one is my first attempt to my favorite actor and it came back a bit different than others I have received in the past from sports players. So I want to lean towards legit.

The back of the envelope was actually sealed and sealed well with tape as if they didn't want someone in it. I have never seen this before.

Inside, Chevy not only signed my index card I sent, but he also included another index card to keep the autograph from smudging on the inside of the envelope and probably to keep it from being seen from the outside. He also stamped his address on the outside.

I thought that was pretty cool.

When it comes to the autograph itself, it appears to be signed the way he has always signed most of his items, XO Chevy Chase. I also compared the autograph on the Steiner Sports website HERE. Looks legit.

Another thing I thought was really cool if you didn't notice it above on the back of the envelope is the  "DNA" that was left in the tape. Looks like a piece of sweater. Bonus win for a collector! Just hope it doesn't come across creepy that I noticed that because I wasn't trying to sound that way.

A big thanks to Chevy for taking time out for his fans. From SNL to the National Lampoon movies to Community to Hot Tub Time Machine to the latest Vacation movie, I have seen it all and look for more from you in the future.

What's the coolest TTM you have ever gotten and how legit do you think this autograph or others are getting them this way?

Trade Mail Day From 90's Niche Football Card Blog Part 5: Chevy Chase Autograph!

In the finale from my most recent trade from 90's Niche Football Card Blog , I acquired something quite cool........

THIS!

You can stop drooling now.

This is how I reacted when I got it in hand..

(by the way this is a sketch card from a scene in Christmas Vacation I got it from the Blowout Cards forums a few years ago)

I have been a fan of Chevy's for years so at some point in my life I wanted to add an autograph to my collection. Now, most of his autographs run for $100-$200 for 8x10's but I didn't really want a photo anyways, I wanted a card. So I did some searching. I found two cards on eBay without authenticity with very reasonable prices. Both of the autographs were TTM's according to their sellers. One was the card above, the other was a signed index card. I thought this one looked much cooler so worked out a deal with 90's Niche Football Card blog to help me acquire it.

But, we didn't just go out and buy it. We did some research. First, we checked the autograph with other autographs. Seemed to be a good match. Secondly, I questioned this card because of the XO inscription and wondered if he ever signed anything like that, well, that answer came here:
http://www.historyforsale.com/html/prodetails.asp?documentid=320963&start=65&page=157

Third, I just had to read the description from the seller again to make sure I understood what I was getting. First, they were a VERY high rated seller. Second, they claimed the card came as a "REQUEST THROUGH THE MAIL AND COMES WITH A MONEY BACK GUARANTEE" That alone must be pretty legit. Who would give money back on a fake? But maybe they assume you won't second guess the autograph. Who knows. This was also a reassurance at least in my mind, "I HAVE BEEN COLLECTING AUTOGRAPHS FOR OVER 30 YEARS, MANY OF THEM THROUGH THE MAIL"

Lastly, I looked at it like this, the card was cheap. It was worth the risk/reward to me so why was I stressing so much over it??!!? I WANT IT! So, I got it.

Not sure if I will ever send it in to be verified or not, I have gone back and forth on it. In the meantime however, I am just going to enjoy the card and treat it for the realness I believe it is.

A HUGE thanks goes out to 90's Niche Card Blog for this amazing trade! I look forward to our next one.

Before closing this long article out, while we are on the topic of Chevy Chase, I must say my favorite movie of his and my favorite movie of ALL TIME is Christmas Vacation. It's a yearly tradition that I watch it and I have seen it so many times that I know every line. Just ask my wife hahaha.

So today's topic is simple, one, give me your favorite line from Christmas Vacation or tell me your favorite Chevy Chase movie.
