Breakin' With Cardboard Collections

 

I recently saw a break on Twitter that Cardboard Collections, @flywheels, was hosting with a box of 1996 Sportflix baseball and wanted in. 

Only problem, there wasn't many teams left to get in on. So as a Yankees fan (Mariners fan just to land some Griffeys) I sinned and grabbed the Red Sox in the break.

I can feel you all shaming me now.

But, I did it to score some Mo Vaughns despite the team, I always liked watching the big dude hit. And it was also a brand in my favorite time to collect which was the biggest draw.

Let's see how I did.

Roger Clemens. I really liked Roger and would always pretend to be him when I was pitching in backyard baseball against my friend Brian. Then came the steroid talk and he was no longer my favorite pitcher.

 

I ended up with 2 of these UC3 subset cards of Vaughn, I like the 3D appeal which is hard to capture in a blog post.

Jose Roidseco. I always forget how many teams he bounced around to and always forget he even played for the Red Sox. I associate him more with the Rays than I do the Red Sox.

Overall for the cost, that was fun and I landed a couple of cards for my players collection.

Let's Talk About Sets Volume 47: Man 2 Man

Let's have a talk about sets, Man 2 Man.

Back in 1995 Sportflix released an insert set called Man 2 Man that fell roughly 1:8 packs. At the time, I pulled the Dan Marino/Troy Aikman version which had a book value of $25 and was one of the biggest cards in my collection.

Since then, we know the story of how values fell, and I am simply looking just to chase the set down and every year find myself inching ever so closely to doing so.

With these 2 new adds from Burbank Sportscards Beckett Marketplace (also saved 10% by using code 15Burbank), I am only 4 away from having the set.

The lentincular appeal is what catches my eye. It has a 3D look to it as opposed to other Sportflix cards that move when you flip them, these do not. Which makes them stand out.

I hope to complete this set by years end but have a lot of set updating on here before doing so. 

There will be other posts coming up soon in this series as I can't get enough sets.

As I always say, the more sets, the better.

Kerry's Cardboard:Dennis Sent These

Dennis over at Too Many Verlanders blog fame, found me some SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCKK Kerry Collins in my last mail day. I am not even sure how he ran into these, but I was so stoked that he had.

Since I am behind again on Kerry Collins, I thought I would sum up the new additions from Dennis all in this post.

 

This Mirror Image 1st round draft pick usually falls 1:4 packs as a base, but being a refractor, it is 1:36 packs.

One of the best looking Kerry Collins rookies out there! This is the sweet refractor version. I can't find odds on these so not sure how hard they were to pull.

Next up, Trophy Collection. Wooooooooooooo. These fell 1:4 packs. I never get sick of seeing Dufex.

And finally, who doesn't appreciate some Sportflix in their lives. This is the Artist Proof fell at a tough 1:36 packs. These are so tough that I am still missing the Rodney Hampton one for 1994 or 1995.

1991 song by Salt-N-Pepa was about a much different topic than I am turning it into. You see, I am staying on topic with cards. Not,well, what they were talking about. This newest segment about the 90's will focus on my set chases (the ones I have already used for a Origins Post or don't plan on using) and new additions to them along with updates on how far I have gotten.

It's time for us to sit down and have that discussion between your parents and you that you tried to avoid. You know, that conversation you have with them about the Flairs and the Pinnacles. Kids, it's time to Talk About Sets.

And today we go down and dirty with Sportflix and their insert Man2Man. (by the way today marks the 4400 post published on this blog)

One of my best pulls in the product ever was a Man2Man of Dan Marino and Troy Aikman. I believe at the time it had a book value of $20 at the time but with the power of eBay, the values have dropped over the years. But, not my love of the insert.

So far I only have 5 of the set, I need to check that number  as I think it's 7 with today's latest adds. Still have a few to go before I can complete it including some of the bigger named players. Once again, I can't do sets by myself and will need help from you guys.

But, here is a look at the two new ones I picked up over at Burbank Sportcards:

Sets Of My Childood THE SERIES! Part 9:1995 SportFlix Man 2 Man

We are into the 9th installment of this surprisingly popular series.This time we go back 23 years to 1995 and check out an insert line from 1995 Sportflix football. The lenticular technology is on the list of extinction of today's use. Another sad loss.

So let's check this one out.

For Sets Of My Childhood, I decided not only would I make a want list of each of the sets I am chasing in a tab, but I thought a little breakdown and feature may help get me more set help. I am sure many of the sets I am seeking are nickel and dime type of cards so I am hoping my trader friends can be on the lookout for any I don't have.

My local grocery store carried tons of packs of SportFlix football back in 1995. The fun thing about buying cards from a grocery store was that the display was all the way up front as soon as you entered the store. While my parents shopped, I stood at the display and checked things out. I didn't seem to have a lot of luck pulling good cards from SportFlix, but I really enjoyed how the players moved on the cards when you flipped them just so.

My best pull at the time from the product was the Man 2 Man card of Dan Marino and Troy Aikman. These cards don't move when you flip them like other SportFlix cards, but has a cool 3D appeal especially with the football jumping out at you. These cards fell 1:8 jumbo packs. At the time card I pulled even had a $25 book value so it was at the top of my most valuable cards then. The card has since dipped some along with others in the set but that's okay. This will hopefully make the chase a tad easier for me.

There are only 12 cards in the set. I have 5, one I pulled myself and four added thanks to the help of my good friend Bryan over at 90's Niche Football Card Blog.  So I only have 7 more to go and would love to finish this one up.

Breakin Wax:1995 Sportflix Football 4-Pack Break

Sportflix...an innovation that had been around since the 80's. One that companies continued to improve upon year after year and one of my favorite releases that came out was 1995 Sportflix football. I was fortunate enough to had bought a lot pack that came with three packs of it. Let's check out to see how I did.

In every pack of 1995 Sportflix football were 5 cards. Four of those cards were base, unless there was an insert thrown in, and one would be a rookie. You can roughly find packs for $1.50 now.

If you don't know anything about Sportflix, they were cards that you could with the tip of the card make one scene on the card change to another. I put this Reggie White card at the right angle where you can see both scenes.

The back of these cards look nice as well.

Game Winners subset. Was a bit surprised they stuck Dave Brown in it. The only memories I have of him is how many games the Giants loss under his QBing.

And the rookies. They are very bright and bold. They are also offset from the base cards as they don't move. the color in the background does very slightly.

Overall, nothing that truly stands out. I did pick up some PC cards in the rookies and Dave Brown. I was really hoping to pull a Man2Man insert. They look really cool and are my favorite designed insert from the product. If you don't know what they look like, I don't have an image in front of me, but just check out eBay and search for them.

Ken Griffey Jr Cards Of The Week!

Once again, some great late 90's innovation and design. The Spx cards were just simply amazing with the combination of hologram and color. On another note, all of these Ken Griffey Jr. Cards Of The Week are strictly from my personal PC of him of when I used to collect him.

Products I miss: Sportflix

SportFlix and their uniqueness were around for a few years. You can move the card back and forth and the player's photo would be two different shots. As for the card above, you can move the card and the name goes from little to big. I believe 1995 was the last year they produced this product. I think the type of innovation used in this would look great with memorabilia or autographs in today's hobby world.
