Kerry's Cardboard:2003 Fleer Ultra Platinum Medallion /100

We go from one former NY Giants QB yesterday, to another former one today in the newest Kerry's Cardboard addition.

I have Kerry Collins as a saved search on eBay so I can keep track of cool cards and watch them when I see them. I don't always have the funding to grab them, but when I do, I try to add the toughest ones first.

Today's card is a Platinum Medallion. There were no odds on these back in 2003 Fleer Ultra, but they are numbered to 100 so they are not easy to find. Just like any of the Ultra Platinum Medallions throughout the years.

The front of the card has a silver/platinum tint to it.

 

The back is numbered to 100 and has the words Platinum Medallion. Wouldn't it be nice if some of today's products listed what they actually are? Especially Mosiac. Some of those parallels are really hard to tell.

This is so far the only Platinum Medallion I own of Kerry. I will need to chase the others down at some point.

Kerry's Cardboard:2003 Fleer Mystique Awe Pairs Dual Game Jersey w/Jeremy Shockey

Kerry's Cardboard finds a new home again as the Giants only portion of my Kerry Collins collection makes it way on here.

Today, I am showcasing a game worn dual jersey card that I landed for less than $5.

Today's card features two of my favorite Giants of the 2000's. I think a lot of people forget about the impact that Kerry Collins had on the Giants passing game after signing with them. He also had an impact on Jeremy Shockey when he came into the league in 2002. They were an unstoppable force for a couple of years before the Giants released Collins in favor of Kurt Warner/Eli Manning in 2004.

So, there is a lot of cards that feature the two on them. This is the only copy I have seen of this card listed.

 

This is the back of the card. Only 199 of these were produced.

There are two other variations of this card which are in form of inserts. There is a base insert and a gold parallel which is extremely tough to find.

Player HITlights:Ron Dixon

 

Ron Dixon was a 3rd round pick of the NY Giants in the 2000 NFL Draft where he spent his entire NFL career.

Dixon was best known for his two kickoff returns in the 2000 playoffs for the Giants. Both were 97 yard returns, one against the Eagles in Divisional Playoffs and then was the only score for the Giants in Super Bowl 35 against the Baltimore Ravens.

 

He played from 2000-2003 before a PCL injury hurt his career. He tried out for couple of teams training camps and officially retiring in 2005.

I only have a couple of his hits, the Limited above is by far my favorite of the two with the swatch of football and lace.

At some point I would like to add a certified autograph of him to the collection. I can't imagine he costs very much, I just keep forgetting about him and adding him to the my autograph need lists.

Same Game, Same Play?

Have deep do you look at your cards? Have you noticed anything more than just an image of your favorite player featured on the front?

I know that I haven't. 

I do enjoy action photography and can sometimes pick the game from which the picture was taken, but other than that, I don't take much note.

Today's cards however, I will take a deeper look at.

I don't remember who sent me the two cards from today's post, but they pointed out with a note that they have one thing in common, they are from the same game.

Interesting. Never would have thought of matching up two cards to see if the photographs were taken from the same game.

So I dug deeper and looked at the two cards from 2004 Topps and 2004 Topps Total.

The game played was between the St.Louis Rams and the NY Giants. It was played on Week One of the 2003 NFL season in a game which was won by the NY Giants 23-13, despite Kurt Warner's big day.

I looked at the two cards and can see it was the same game, but was there something else about the comparison that I could look at.

 

Here we see Kurt Warner dropping back to pass but the question becomes....

 

is this the same play? Is Mike chasing him down?

Michael Strahan did record a sack in that game but did he get it right there? Does Kurt see Michael coming after him? Is this two different plays?

 

So I had to take a second look by putting the cards side by side again.

 

It appears Kurt's angle doesn't match up with the other card. But, does that rule this out as the same play, no. However, looking at body language tells me a lot. It's pretty obvious on the Kurt Warner card he is throwing. The Strahan card appears he has either already thrown (which doesn't rule it out) or has just handed the ball off looking at the way he is standing and the fact I do not see a ball in his right hand. That would rule it out. 

Once again, I am not dead set on that as an answer.

The only answer I can come up with is the fact it's the same game but not the same play. Am I right? Who knows? Either way it was fun trying to dissect this card and figure it out.

FORGOTTEN: 2003 Topps Bazooka Baseball

Bazooka Gum and Topps have been hand to hand forever so in 2003 Topps made a baseball card product called Topps Bazooka. With 24 packs, 9 cards per pack and 3 Relic Cards per box at a reasonable price it was a product for those young and old. 

There were also fun inclusions like Stamps, StandUps and of course comics to find as well. Another thing to note is Bazooka Joe could also be found in the product.

Boxes can still be found now for about $40 a box.

FORGOTTEN: 2003 Playoff Hogg Heaven

Here is our NEW segment on Sport Card Collectors. This segment is not about the players per say, its more about the cards and design. We will focus our efforts on bringing you brands you may have forgotten about over time. Sports for these products will include basketball, football and baseball products.

 

Not only is this a popular insert, but back in 2003 Playoff created a whole product based around it. Every hobby box contained 3 game used and autographs and 5 leather cards. I found the leather cards to be very cool innovation. And you can actually smell it. And don't tell me you don't smell your cards as well. Who doesn't?

Most memorabilia in the product is numbered and printed on the leather cards. Inserts as well.

Every hobby box also had 20 packs per box and 5 cards per pack. We don't have a box price on this product.

The design is very well done with the football bump appeal and the team logo hidden behind the player. The player also being in full color jumps off from the cardboard. The rookies appear as Rookie Premier materials or plain like the base cards. Some key players Willis McGahee, Carson Palmer, Ken Hamlin, Kelley Washington among others.

Oddball Collection..part 2: 2004 Fleer Hummers with cards

Am I the only one who jumped on these??!! At that time, I saw a players rookie card and a hummer! Wow what a collectible!! But now I have come to the realization that the 2 part set is pretty much worthless for value wise. But as a collectible, still a unique piece. They made these in 2004 for Football and Basketball. They made a different version for baseball.

Most of the sales on ebay for these are under $10. However, you have got to be careful when purchasing any rookie cards of these players and more from that year that look like these. People are passing them off as the real rookies when they are not.
