Burbank Pickups Of The Month Part 2: Sets!

Burbank has been a huge help with my set chasing, especially 90's.

But, it as also helped me with a newer set as well.

My chase for the 2011 Topps American Pie base set continues. I have gotten really far, but still missing some important pieces such as the Kurt Cobain card. I now have every card that Burbank has to offer for my set help for this one, I will have to look elsewhere for more help on completing this.

Added this Sanders to my Dream Team chase.

I thought from a distance about chasing this set, but, not as cool once I got it in person. They are also numbered.

3,2,1 Inserts....except these are the holofoil parallels of those. They are much sharper, not that the basic insert looks too bad either.

This Kerry Collins serves as a dual PC item.

Remember, you too can order from Burbank Sportcards Beckett Marketplace and Save 10% off your orders from Burbanks Sportscards on Beckett Marketplace. Use Code: 15BURBANK at checkout to do so! Also spend $50 and you will get free shipping. BOOM!

Unintentional Rainbow Chase:2011 Marvin Austin

Well, today's Unintentional Rainbow Chase I can't seem to find any details on what I am missing for both the Topps and Topps Chrome chases. With no information to be found on my most reliable source in Cardboard Connection I can't tell you what's left but can only show you what I have.

I have a decent start on Topps Chrome with 4 of the cards in hand and all looking great.

My Topps one, well, is basically the usual basics of Gold and base.

Hopefully I can find some detail on these somewhere soon. I may have to check out TCDB to see if they have any information.

Museum Musings:A Piece Of Barry Bonds History!

Back in March, I held a contest taking suggestions on what kind of stuff you guys would like to read more about on the blog. Many of the suggestions were toys to non sports to non card items. Well, to please the crowd I will do my best to post those kind of items in this new segment.

Over the years, I have accumulated so much junk. A good portion of it including most of my Starting Lineups and any figures were traded off. I also had a bunch of autographed items I was just looking to downsize with and traded half of those off as well. I still have some to go in that area.

Most of the items I acquired over the years were from purchases in online catalogs, local outlets, department stores, gifts from family, and from a few contests I won. I originally really wanted these items, but as time has gone on and I have gotten older and what feels as my house getting smaller, I decided it was time just to collect cards now. No more adding those markdown McFarlane figures just for the fun of it.

There are some pieces however, I plan on keeping forever. These pieces I will showcase on here.

Back when I first joined the era of internet collecting in 2011, I joined the Upper Deck Volunteer Alliance and earned myself a mail day with my work on my very first mission. As a reward, Upper Deck sends it's members who earned a mail day a prize or prizes. One of my first prizes was the Upper Deck memorabilia piece of Barry Bonds.

This is a Piece Of The Action gameball swatch from when Bonds hit his 500th home run. It is also numbered to guess what, 500.

The piece comes with the authenticity Upper Deck hologram on the back.

I like the piece but wished it had been Ken Griffey Jr instead. Never really been a Bonds fan especially after he was in the steroid accusations group. I had considered trading this off but never have had success doing so. For now, I plan on keeping this piece of MLB history* instead. There has to be a reason I have it still. I do like the design, ball swatch with stitches and the fact it's limited to 500 but once again, it's Barry Bonds.

How many of you own a piece like this? Own an Upper Deck Authenticated piece? What do you own or dream to own? Let me hear it in comments!!

Breakin Wax:2011 Score Football Hobby Box

If you are looking to set build, specific rookies and box at a great price, it's best to turn to Score. Sometimes you even may find yourself lucky and pull an autograph! That wasn't me however lol.

In every hobby box of 2011 Score is 36 packs with 7 cards per pack. You will find one rookie, one insert and one gloss per pack as well. Sometimes you may find more than that per pack. Boxes will run about $20-$30.

I wasn't going to break down the base or the designs as I have already done a review of the product you can find on the blog. This was just about the best of this specific break.

My box was great with the rookies. The one I wanted the most was Cam Newton, NFL MVP and Super Bowl run on top of being almost a one-person wrecking crew it was obvious he was tops and was luckily in there. I have had boxes of Score in the past where I wouldn't get the top rookie. On top of Cam,  getting JJ Watt isn't that bad either ;)

I even got the base Andy Dalton rookie and the photo variation. The best pull from the box in my opinion.

There were inserts GALORE!! The inserts all had parallels too.I wished my blog had deleted the rest of the insert pictures I had taken.

Here are the parallels.....gold....glossy...

Glossy inserts...

And a Red Zone that are not easy to find. My only one in this box and only my second overall.
Great price, fun inserts, rookies, short prints and cards for my PC. I can't see why anyone would turn down a fun bust like this.

How many of you bust Score? What's your favorite part of opening it?

Breakin Wax: 2011 Panini Contenders Football Blaster Box

In this edition of Breakin Wax, I decided to open up a blast box of Contenders 2011. With one autograph per box and a decent price point, it was worth the risk.

In each blaster box of 2011 Panini Contenders football, there are five packs with five cards per pack. There is also one guaranteed autograph and a price point of about $15 now.

The base card design is a nice one. You have a well laid out ticket design on the right hand side and a nice action photo on the left. This is one of the better Contenders base card designs in years.

Some nice looking inserts including a Demarco Murray Rookie Roll Call and a 2011 Rookie Draft Class with Julio Jones on it.

And here is my autograph. Not the best, but still a rookie ticket auto. Not sure if Aldrick is playing anymore, but with some of these players, you just never know when they will make their impact. That's the fun thing about Contenders. The autograph checklist is very deep and even includes kickers.
Overall, worth the risk. I have seen some good autographs be pulled from blaster boxes including short prints. I like the overall design of the product and now that the price point is $15, I think it's worth taking a gamble on.

Breakin Wax: 2011 Panini Gridiron Gear Football Five Rack Packs

With a decent rookie class in 2011 and with some of the players starting to pull off big seasons, not to mention a great price, I said why not give these a try.

In every rack pack of 2011 Panini Gridiron Gear is 40 cards. In the 40 cards, you will roughly find 4 rookie cards. Two in the top pack, two in the bottom pack. You may also find inserts and parallels too.

The base cards looked like this. It's not a bad design, but I wished the border could have been trimmed down a little more on the bottom. It takes away from the photo.

Back of card. I actually like the back design.

Rookies I pulled including 20-sack season leader Justin Houston who almost broke the record this year. A couple of Giants PC adds as well in Marvin Austin and Da'Rell Scott.

A couple inserts

And some numbered parallels. Silver ones here and great players too such as Patrick Peterson (rookie) and Nick Fairley (rookie).

Gold parallels
Overall, nothing too special. I did get some great rookies and parallels which will fit in my PC along with a ton of base I might try to put a set together with. Still was worth the buy hit or not.

Retail Break 'Em:3 2011 University Of Texas Blaster Boxes

Dacardworld had a what I would call fire sale on this product, so I said, hey, why not. Never busted any and for the dirt cheap price it was, didn't hurt to try. So I got three.
