I don't usually check every football release's checklist when they come out to see if any of my Giants players are on it or not.

I simply use my eBay saved searches to tell me when my players have new cards out.

When my Eli Manning search notified me of a new Eli card listed, I checked it out. 

What popped up was this card and I had to have it. Anything to do with either Super Bowl 42 or Super Bowl 46 I WANT.

The problem was, at the time I didn't have the funding to grab it. So, I had to do the one thing I hate, waiting. 

I knew there would be a million of these that pop up since they were a simple insert, but I just am a "want it now" person.

 

But, I did end up waiting and a couple of weeks later a copy of this card popped up on Burbank Sportcards Marketplace and I added it to my cart.

I am happy with this one. Even though the autograph edition of it is much more wanted but way out of my budget league.

New Addition:2020 Panini Contenders Xavier McKinney

I can't believe it's December 1st already, 2021 has flown by. However, the official countdown to Christmas can kick into gear.

Another thing that has flown by so far has been the NFL season. I can't believe we are upcoming on Week 13 already.

The Giants season once again hasn't gone quite as hoped, currently the Gmen find themselves in last place of the NFC East with a 4-7 record. However, the last playoff spot is somehow within reach still.

One of the highlights of this season at least has been the play of Xavier McKinney who is in his second year.  This season he has tallied 39 tackles, five interceptions and a touchdown and at moments has made some big plays in key moments. One of those was this past weekend where he broke up a late game pass when the Eagles were driving for a score.

I didn't have a Giants uniform autographed card yet, so I figured it was time before he becomes a Pro Bowl safety.

 

And when I went for that autograph, I went for the best. This is his 2020 Contenders rookie ticket autograph.

 

Back of the card. I like the Contenders rookie autographs since the backs are so much better than regular Panini autos. These have a nice write up along with some stats.

I hope McKinney can continue to make plays to help this team drive towards a playoff run. First though, we got to beat Miami this week.

Nuttin' But The Hits:2015 Panini Contenders Draft Picks Hobby Box (1/1 Auto!!)

I have had such a drag year when it comes to being able to open wax. With flippers cleaning off retail shelves, my hobby funds falling, and no reviews incoming, opening up anything hasn't been easy.

Shane felt my pain so he offered to trade me a box so I could have something to rip. And rip I did.

Today's box is a 2015 Panini Contenders Draft Picks featuring the top players of the draft on the front. Well, at the time it was believed to be that. I still haven't given up on Winston yet. I think the Saints will be a great place for him to learn how to be a great NFL QB. Watch out for that when Drew retires.

I was just hoping for a good veteran auto.

NYG Week Part 1:Can't CONTEND With Contenders Autographs

Well, a few weeks ago I posted about my trade with 90's Niche Football Card Blog and told you I would use the rest of the trade as a series of posts to countdown to the NY Giants first game of the regular season against the Dallas Cowboys.

Well, here we go.

Up first, my very first Geremy Davis autograph. This guy hit the field a few times last year but never really made an impact yet. But, I keep hearing that he is a hidden gem, it's just too bad the Giants didn't feel the same way as he was apart of this years cuts. Luckily for me though, they re-signed him to the Practice Squad.

Steve Smith was absolutely dominant his years with the Giants. His rookie year was slowed down by injuries but he made a huge impact and catch in the Giants Super Bowl 42 win over the Patriots

Tavares King is a guy who looked to have a solid training camp and preseason made this years team. Corey Washington at one time was dominant in the preseason too and was one of my favorite players from the preseason of 2015, failed to provide the boom in the regular season like he did in the preseason. I still think he has a lot of potential if given just one more shot.

And finally, a card I have wanted for a couple of years, running back Orleans Darkwa. Not only do I love the name, but he has proven himself a few times on the field and so far is on the team. The guy also had a very solid preseason so who knows where he actually stands on the depth chart.

 

A great start to Giants week I must say. But, there is more to come. Stay tuned!

REVIEW:2015 Contenders Draft Picks Basketball (HUGE HIT)

24 Packs Per Box, 8 Cards Per Pack

In the collecting world when you hear or say the word Contenders, you know other collectors will be listening. So when Panini decided to expand their Contenders line with Draft Picks football and today's break, Draft Picks basketball, collectors should rejoice in excitement at the thought of being able to collect their favorite rookies autographs twice. At least that's the way I see it.

Another way to grab collector's attention is to put the word HUGE HIT in my blog title to help celebrate a big one that I pulled in here.

 

In every box of 2015(-2016) Panini Contenders Draft Picks basketball are 24 packs of 8. Of those 8 cards in a pack, half are inserts. You will also find 5 autographs per box but most likely it will be 6 as Panini has shown with past Contenders releases and my box had that.

Boxes will run you just under $130.
You will also find the following:

- 3 CLASS REUNION,
- 3 COLLEGE CONNECTIONS
- 2 PASSPORTS
- 6 GAME DAY TICKETS
- 24 SCHOOL COLORS
- 24 OLD SCHOOL COLORS

The base cards are once again given the ticket treatment. I don't think it would be Contenders if they weren't given that. Being a Draft Picks product, it focuses on the players college years as you will see these players in their throwback uniforms.

There are 100 cards in the base set.

24 Packs Per Box, 8 Cards Per Pac

Panini kept this draft picks product pretty similar to the football version that seemed to have been a success by delivering an insert lineup that features School Colors, Old School Colors, Collegiate Connections, Game Day Tickets, Class Reunion, the fabled College Ticket Autographs and juggernaut parallels like Cracked Ice.

Designs are similar too. Old School Colors covers veterans in their college years while School Colors covers this years rookie class in theirs. I like that Panini offset the two similar inserts in terms of design.

I have never pulled a Cracked Ice so when I didn't find one here, that was no surprise.

The inserts do look nice, but I must admit, I do miss the days of when most Contenders or Donruss products had numbered inserts. Now there just seems to be way too many base inserts.

Well, now it's time to get to what you have been really waiting for. The autographs! These are by far what the product is all about.

Thorton is a Celtic drafted 45th overall and Johnson was 48th by the Thunder.

Hezonja plays for the Magic and has a lot of potential.

Richardson, was drafted 40th by the Miami Heat. My only ticket parallel from the box numbered to 99.

And THE BIG BAD BOY! Playing tremendous this season is JAHLIL OKAFOR. It also appears from early indication that this is a variation as well.

Okafor was drafted 3rd overall by the 76ers. He joins LeBron James and Kevin Durant as the only players to score at least 80 points in their team’s first four games at the age 19 and under and currently leads all rookies in scoring at 20.3 points per game.

 

Overall, a tremendous break. The Okafor, I got an WNBA auto, International auto and the rest are second round picks with potential. Seems value is in here. Especially when you are talking rookies as you never know which ones will or will not make it.

I do have a few tweaks I would make too. One, way too many inserts with four per pack. That needs to be dulled down. I think a few more parallels per box and maybe even a different pack layout as 24 packs just seemed like a lot of base/inserts. However, it did help excitement grow for that next auto with every pack I opened.

You Just Never Know.....

When tearing apart my collection looking for some trade cards, I ran into a few cards I didn't know I had. I was pleasantly surprised and happy to have found them. It also leads me to wonder what else I may have forgotten about. If I find more, I will post them, but in the meantime, enjoy what I found this time.

A 2012 Panini Contenders Richard Sherman rookie card. I may not like the guy, but he is a dominant player and a rookie card I needed.

Then I discovered what some may call a rarity, 1991 Topps Desert Shield cards in MINT condition of Gary Sheffield and

Fred McGriff.

It has been said that only 6.500-7,000 sets of these cards were produced and were given out to only troops involved in the first Gulf War. So there may not be many of these that made it home in great condition. So finding some first was a surprise, but finding them in such great condition was an added bonus.

After finding these I strongly believe I need to revisit a few boxes of stuff I haven't looked through in awhile. Who knows what I may find and if I do find something, I will definitely show you guys!

THIS vs THAT Battle 1

As you all know, I am a huge 90's card collector and loved everything to do with that era of collecting. It's not like I still don't enjoy collecting today, but there was just something about that era that will never be surpassed.

So I thought it would be fun to do a BATTLE OF THE....... CAAAAAAAAARDS (picture a deep voice and drawn out ending). If any of you watch SportsCenter, you would know they have a segment called the Best Of The Best where they pin two of the best plays against one another. One play may have been from previous days in a row against a new one. The goal is to narrow down the best. Well, I want to do a Best Of The Best card version but mine is called This vs That.

Here is how this is going to work.

1. I will put a post up such as this one and you will have one week to vote on one card or the other by telling me in comments which one you like more. 
2. There will be one card from the 90's, one card from the 2000's. 
3. There will be a variety of sports versing one another. This contest isn't to pin sport vs sport. 
4. Voting is based upon the OVERALL card and looking at things such as design, creativity, photography and eye appeal. Don't judge a card because it's an autograph or jersey card vs a base card. This "contest" is to see which card is OVERALL better and not just because it's signed or has someone's memorabilia. Same goes for the inserts vs the base. I will try my best to make them the fairest I see possible.
5. After a week of voting, the card with the most votes moves on to face another card. 
6. A card that loses cannot be brought back nor can its design.Example is if I use the 1993-1994 Stadium Club hockey card design, I cannot use the 1994 Stadium Club football card design later on as they are most likely the same thing. The designs on the cards must be different.
7. I will keep a tally on which cards have won and how many times they have won at the top of the next weeks post.

I am not sure when I will end the overall "contest", maybe by the end of the year, let's see how many voters show up first. But, the goal is to see which card ends up being the best and which era gets more wins.

Breakin Wax: 2014 Panini Contenders Football Hobby Box Break

Other than Topps Chrome, this is one of my other favorite must-have football releases every year. The rookie autograph tickets are always the most popular rookies to have in the hobby and I for one like to make sure to have some on hand.

Every box of 2014 Panini Contenders comes with 24 packs and 5 cards per pack. There are also 5 guaranteed autographs per box with most pulling in a 6th and there are 2 that are on-card. Boxes are running pretty high right now with it's popularity and the great rookie class. They are currently at $130.

The product overall looks really nice. It starts out with the impressive base card design. This is one of my favorite Contender ones yet. (also note I showcased a PC card for an example)

The nice designs didn't stop there. The inserts were nicely done as well.

Cracked Ice!! Love these! This Shonn Greene is numbered just to 22.

Now onto the hits. A nice Jarvis Landry Rookie Ink autograph that I redeemed immediately. He is really good. Not Beckham good, but good. Also pulled yet another West autograph. I believe my third.

Then came some BOOM! Yes, these all look like they are normal autographs, but one of them is extremely rare. Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, upon further investigation, is the rare find. It is the Seat parallel and is numbered to 50 or less according to Panini. I had to ask them to clarify if I had the right one. My first ever parallel pull from the product.

Overall, a great break for me. I can't promise they all will be like this especially at the price they are. But probably my best break in some time. Pulling the Landry autograph was a nice start, but pulling the Dix was even more impressive. I also am a big fan of the design of the overall product and managed to get myself the base set put together. May be something that looks nice in a binder. You can't say that for every base product that comes out now-a-days.

Breakin Wax: 2011 Panini Contenders Football Blaster Box

In this edition of Breakin Wax, I decided to open up a blast box of Contenders 2011. With one autograph per box and a decent price point, it was worth the risk.

In each blaster box of 2011 Panini Contenders football, there are five packs with five cards per pack. There is also one guaranteed autograph and a price point of about $15 now.

The base card design is a nice one. You have a well laid out ticket design on the right hand side and a nice action photo on the left. This is one of the better Contenders base card designs in years.

Some nice looking inserts including a Demarco Murray Rookie Roll Call and a 2011 Rookie Draft Class with Julio Jones on it.

And here is my autograph. Not the best, but still a rookie ticket auto. Not sure if Aldrick is playing anymore, but with some of these players, you just never know when they will make their impact. That's the fun thing about Contenders. The autograph checklist is very deep and even includes kickers.

Overall, worth the risk. I have seen some good autographs be pulled from blaster boxes including short prints. I like the overall design of the product and now that the price point is $15, I think it's worth taking a gamble on.
