Burbank Pickups Of The Month:September 2021 Edition

My mood with my pickups at Burbank Sportcards changes month to month. Some months I am in the mood for the 90's and other months I am staring at set filling and now that it's fall, it's all about the NY Giants. Today's pickups are not all that I acquired, but a good chunk. I am saving the others for my Game Day posts.

Let's take a look at what I grabbed for the month of September.

2014 Prizm Parallels of Andre Williams.  I think 2014 Prizm has some of the best looking parallels out of all things Prizm.

I am not sure if this is a sign of things to come in a chase or if this is just a few adds for fun. Only time will tell. For now, I will enjoy these beauties.

The One Time A Connor Shaw Autograph Is Worth $100

Back Of The Card:

One of the biggest rules of the promotion is that it had to be a legit autograph from legit companies. Right here is my guarantee.

And here he is getting packed up for his journey. I will miss the card a bit because I do like the design, but Steiner offers so many great items that I am sure I will soon forget.

I made sure to include an index card with my info for the gift card.

Final envelope all addressed and protected to go out in the mail tomorrow.

  

Once this reaches them, it says on the site it will take up to three weeks to receive the gift card if you are approved. I assume all that means is if the item you sent in is off their list and is legit. Which mine is.

I will let you guys know what I pick up with the gift card once I get it back. I have my eyes on a few things.

Breakin Wax: 2014 Panini Hot Rookies Football (3rd time)

Yes, you read the post title correct, this is my third break of 2014 Panini Hot Rookies football. If you have been reading the past two posts, you know I love this product. However, since the first break, I have had worse and worse luck. This box was by far the most terrible of the three.

It's not only the design that catches my attention about Hot Rookies, it's the price. How many boxes can you find for under $50 that has four hits?

Now the hits. 2 of my hits were Panini points...................................................................ugh..........

As you can see, this was a very rough break. I still like the price and the product, but two, TWO Panini Points cards in the box. That seems a little too much to me. One I don't mind, but replacing two of the hits with them, that doesn't seem right.

Despite the poor showing in my last two boxes, I still plan on going back for more. But, if this streak continues, at some point, I will stop buying it even at the great price.

Breakin Wax: 2014 Panini Hot Rookies Football Hobby Box

After falling in love with the first box of Hot Rookies I busted, I had to go back for more. What I didn't realize was that my first box of Hot Rookies was a HOT BOX so it came packed with goodies. This one not so much, but I am still a fan and will probably give it another chance for the price it's going for.

Panini Hot Rookies 2014 has a interesting opening experience. First off there are 4 packs per box. Each pack has a different amount of cards and what type of cards are in it. Here is the breakdown:

• 32 cards per pack #1
• 10 cards per pack #2
• 5 cards per pack #3
• 3 cards per pack #4

Pack #1: Hot Rookies Base Cards

• Pack #1 contains 32 cards from the extensive 330-card base set including 2 or 3 cards numbered to 99 or less in every pack

Pack #2: Rookies

• Pack #2 contains10 rookies from the highly touted 2014 draft class including at least one rookie card numbered to 99 or less in every pack.

Pack #3: Inserts

• Pack #3 has 5 inserts including one autographed memorabilia card.

Pack #4: Autographs

• Pack #4 features 3 autographed cards

This not only made it fun being able to save the hits for last, but made me look forward to opening every pack.

Right now you can find most boxes of Hot Rookies priced under $50 which is a STEAL by my standards. Like I said, this box wasn't as good as box one, but I still am a fan.

The base cards are just the same cards as Score. The difference is, is the impressive look of the rainbow foil on them that make them look outstanding.

Inserts. Much better in Hot Rookies than Score. Same goes from when something in Topps looks better in Chrome.

Parallels. Great players.

A little boom! End Zone parallel numbered to 6! If only it was a better player.

Now onto the hits..nothing special here. That cursed Tahj Boyd keeps showing up.

I like the Franchise Fabric auto jersey cards in this product. Most of them are players you don't see everyday which makes it fun. However, it takes away some value.

Overall, not a horrible break for the price. What other products look nice, gives you four hits and you can find under $50. I bet not many.

Hobby Break 'Em: 2014 Panini Hot Rookies Football

Unexpected is what comes to mind when I first ordered this box of Hot Rookies from Steel City Collectibles. I kept seeing the complaints line up on Twitter on how awful this product was and how unimpressed they were by it. But, despite the hearsay, I wanted to give a box a go myself and boy am I glad I did. I have no idea what they were complaining about as this product was probably one of my favorites of the year up to this point.

When I saw the previews for Hot Rookies that Panini gave way back in the summer, I was curious but at the same time concerned that they used the same design from Score.

The base cards in my box were all numbered, they aren't usually, meaning I got what was considered a HOT BOX or HOT PACK. Only pack 1 and 2 contain HOTNESS where the cards are all numbered and I think this box was extra hot with the amount of parallels I hit! These boxes fall one to two per case.

Artist's Proof parallel numbered to 35. Absolutely loved these!

Red Zone parallel numbered to 20. Three great players as well.

Hot Rookies. I think it would have been fun to had included these as the rookie cards in the base set.

Overall, I was shocked. 4 hits, many parallels including three numbered to 20 and a price tag of $54. Not to mention every card is beautiful. I would like someone to point out a better product and pull ratio for that price. This was also a hot box so I am curious to see what a regular box contains and you will see such a break in the future.

Panini Hot Rookies left me wanting more and it should to you as well..

Top 5 NFL Rookies I Am Collecting in 2013

Here are the Top 5 rookies that I am collecting in 2013. Now, as you will see, I don't collect defensive guys, offensive lineman, or people from the Tight End position. Those kind of players don't really seem to make much of a hobby impact to me unless they are on my team. Or much of a hobby impact in general.

1. EJ Manuel will be the Bills starter and showed that he can lead the team after a strong performance in the first preseason game (yes I know it's preseason but you can sometimes just tell). Especially on the two minute drive before the half. That was impressive. I think he will have a good season in Buffalo. He has some young weapons around him as well with rookie WR's Robert Woods and speedster Marquis Goodwin. And who can forget threat Stevie Johnson. CJ Spiller will also be a huge help taking pressure off from Manuel as well as teams will have to aware of where he is on the field.

2.    Watching Mark Sanchez throw a pick on the fourth play of the game in the preseason game against Detroit first thing only told me it will only be time before Geno Smith will be the Jets starter. I do think Sanchez will start the season, but by Week 6 if not earlier if he's struggling the Jets will turn to their future. And Smith not only has a strong arm, but he can make plays with his legs as well. Maybe bringing some excitement to a lacking Jets offense.

3. This guy is a weapon. And the number one option that the Rams have. Sam Bradford looked strong in his first preseason game despite Austin lacking to show up. I think as time goes on and they grow on each other you better watch out for this guy. He can run out of the backfield with trickery plays, can burn you down the field, and has great return skills as well. All around weapon.

4.   This guy is going to be huge in Houston's offense. Matt Schaub must have been drooling after the Texans drafted him. I think teams will as usual double up Andre Johnson leaving the open field to Hopkins who showed in the first preseason game he can be a beast.

5.  Something tells me the Jags are going to use this guy a lot in their offense. Especially when you list him as OW (offensive weapon) on your depth chart. With Jones-Drew dealing with so many injuries and being unable to play all of the time the Jags needed a lift in their offense and I think this guy provides it both as a runner and wide-out.

I believe these rookies will have the biggest impact on the hobby in terms of values. If I was you, like myself, pick up rookies of these guys early on.

Some honorable mentions on here would have been Lacy from Green Bay (with him splitting time with Jonathan Franklin numbers won't be as high) and Giovanni Bernard from Bengals (probably sharing carries as well with Green-Ellis).

I know some of you may question why Cordarrelle Patterson from the Vikings didn't make this list, well, that's because of the Vikings QB. Can Ponder help Patterson put up the numbers needed to make a hobby impact. Time can only tell. I also didn't put Matt Barkley down either cause I don't expect to see him play this year. That's Vick's team.

Despite this years draft being rough for rookie card collectors, I do believe the Top 5 we have chosen will be good ones to collect. The other belief for this years rookie class is that there could be plenty of diamonds in the rough. You just never know. So picking up lesser known offensive guys won't hurt.
