$1 Yard Sale Boxes Breakdown Part 4

I showed off a garbage bag containing some cards a couple weeks ago and said I would break down what was in there, well, here we go.

1 more post to go in this 5 part series for you will see what I found. Of course, I saved the best for last tomorrow.

Today, we still must continue on this time with a box of 1992 Fleer Ultra baseball

Inside the box, there were 4 big stacks of 1992 Fleer Ultra and to my surprise this time, some of the good players were actually in there. A good amount of them.

Here are some rookies. Well, not what I would call rookies but what the card companies call rookies. Yes, I am one of those collectors.

Moose! Not a real rookie or a true rookie as I call it, but still a nice find. The photos on these are really sharp and crystal clear. Something just like Stadium Club was known for.

Overall, the best $1 box so far. But, I still saved the best for last so guess you will have to comeback tomorrow and see.

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 5

The sun is shining, the birds are tweeting and I just busted another pack of UD3. Can you ask God for any better of a day?

 

Today's pack contained some players I call 90's icons. I always feld Andres never got enough respect for what he did on the field, Ripken I believe was loved by all and Manny, well, he is always been Manny. It's fun seeing him in an Indians uniform. I always feel people know him best when he played for Boston.

 

All three of these are once again new so that brings me up to 20/60 towards the set. Hoping to keep on this roll!

 

Pack # 6 up tomorrow. What will I find in there...hoping my first insert at least.....

What's In The Mail Box? Trade Day! 2 BASEBALL HOFer Rookies and MORE!

Once again, it's time for another tremendous Tim Yount mail day! This time Tim and I pulled off a great trade.

This is what he sent me stacked in a plastic box. I can't even begin to express to you the amazing stuff that was hidden in here and it will be awhile before I share the rest of it. A lot of 90's insert madness within! Wait to view it on the blog in January!

WIN!! These Cal Ripken Jr. Cards

Last summer I went to one MASSIVE Yard Sale and came across a huge amount of sports cards, mainly baseball, that I showed off on this blog. I also have spent the last 6 months sorting through them. Finally I have them in piles I want them in for now before I move onto the next round of sorting, but I did notice quite a few doubles along the way. Normally I stick these doubles into huge yard sale boxes that I give away or sell real cheap to kids hoping to entice them to continue on with the hobby. This time I decided to yank some out to share with you guys.

So throughout the baseball season I will be randomly picking times to give some away. They will usually consist of 5-6 80's and 90's base cards but of stars such as Ken Griffey Jr, Derek Jeter, Tony Gwynn, Frank Thomas, Nolan Ryan, some 90's baseball inserts, a few Yankee card lots, among other stars including today's featured giveaway lot of Cal Ripken Jr. Some players will have multiple contests so keep checking back in.

SWEET PC Pickups!

I was at a Fair event recently and walked around looking at exhibitors and seeing what was for sale. You know, looking for candy apples, cotton candy and so on. Walking by each tent I continued to spot food items I would pick up after I did my original walk thru. As I walked by one of the tents, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a table with white boxes stacked on it. Then what appeared was a glass case. I knew exactly what that meant and was surprised when I had walked over to see someone selling cards. I had never in the 11 years of going to the event have ever seen anyone selling cards.  Now the problem that I had was I didn't have much to spend. But figured I would try my best with the $20 I brought.

I looked at the glass case first to see what was offered. Hank Aaron cards. Terry Bradshaw rookie. 2 Cal Ripken Jr rookies. Ken Griffey Jr, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, among other rookies. And a few other odds and ends. Some of which were a little steep for my $20. Inserts, base cards, NASCAR collectibles and a stack of memorabilia and autograph cards were discovered in the white boxes. There were some also lower end rookie cards as well.

Upon further examining, I found out that everything was half price. Which I found great especially with the bottom card in this post staring at me from the glass case. I wanted it and had to have it. It was a rookie card I had chased for years since my father sold off the one we had when I was little.

So to start things off, out of the white boxes, I picked up a couple of Robinson Cano cards for $1 each for the Yankee PC. I do realize afterwards that I overpaid for these, but that's okay. I was too excited about the other two pickups to worry about it.

 

 

This was another rookie card I had to have. Ever since his return to the Yankees, Alfonso Soriano has been RED HOT and possibly will lead them to a Playoff berth. For only $4, I found this to be a bargain pickup with potential. And it would replace the one I lost years ago.

 

And here is the biggie..my first Cal Ripken Jr. Rookie Card in MINT shape and only $12. I thought I scored well on this one especially because of it's condition. The guy also had the Topps rookie as well but wanted $20 for it. I just didn't feel that price was right and didn't want to invest my entire spending into the one card. Note: The card is not ruined, it's a sticker I had trouble prying off from the top loader.

Review: Topps Gypsy Queen Rack Pack 2013

Well, I had to see what all of this Gypsy Queen hype was about..I gotta admit..I wasn't as impressed as others. But here is my review.

Rack Pack Break Down:

• Packs will run you around $10
• Comes with 3 White border parallels per pack (Walmart version)
• 4 cards per pack, 3 packs per Rack Pack

 

 

BASE CARDS: One word can sum these up for me...DARK. I know this product is supposed to be unique in the aspect of it having an old fashioned appeal, the problem I have is the cards are very dark. The backgrounds seem to eat the players into the dark abyss. The border is also very dark. I would have liked to have seen it a little lighter. Speaking of a little lighter, the backs of these cards seem to GLOW in the dark. Wow..my picture doesn't it show it well but they are very bright.

INSERTS: Since Topps made a splash with me with their base product inserts they have let me down since. Heritage inserts looked like the base cards and so don't these ones. These are more like subsets to me. However, outside of the disappointing inserts, I do enjoy the framed parallels and what saved the value of this break was getting a Ripken Jr. one. I like the white against the dark color. It helps liven up the card a little and if they had used these colors for the base cards instead of dark on dark that would have been much better.

AUTOGRAPHS: N/A

JERSEY/PATCH CARDS: N/A

OVERALL THOUGHTS: First off, a very steep rack pack price. I could have bought marked down blasters with more value than this break. Also, I am very disappointed in a product overall that was supposed to be all the rave. I am sure this is a product for some of you. And especially those of you who like past Gypsy Queen product.Maybe hobby is a little better, but don't think it would brighten it up any more for me.

Each can came with a pack of cards inside. You would have to open the can like a can of soup. Each pack came with roughly 5 cards and cans ran around $2.99 at that time. There were randomly inserted autograph cards, inserts and more.

This was one innovation I loved and I wished could be brought back. The first year they came out, I collected every can from the set. The '98 set I could not put together.But I did managed to find a Gold can that were randomly inserted and hard to find. I still own 4 cans that are not opened. Sometimes the temptation is there....but don't think I will ever do it.

Do any of you own these unique items? Do you wish they could come back? Do you wish companies had the same kind of innovations now?
