Let's Talk About Sets Volume Who Knows?:New Set Adds

Let's talk about sets baby...let's talk about new adds for me...let's talk about the shiny, acetate and 90s they can be...let's talk about sets.

I am getting so close on so many sets, but getting so low on funds that it's not a good combination.

At least I was able to knock down some needs for two of my most wanted set finishes.

Set adds number one was three new ones knocked down my Ex2000 baseball set. Think I have roughly 9 more to go

Ground Zero I have been knocking down bigger chunks out at a time. It's only a 200 card set but man, it's a tough one. I have been killing it with knocking down the smaller pieces of this set but still am missing so many of the bigger name players.

This time it was 15 new ones from a seller who runs a buy 4 get 2 free special. He has been a huge help. However, his singles are getting down to the more expensive ones so not sure how much longer I will stick with his stuff.

My hope is to binder these sets soon along with a few others. Sets look best in a binder than in a plastic box. Especially when they look this good.

Just Before The Holidays

Today, yes I am actually posting a mail day that arrived on the day it did for once, I got two unsuspected packages-well one I partially knew about-just in time for the holidays. Both senders had greeted me with a Merry Christmas in their envelopes so thought I would get this up before Christmas ends.

First up, a surprise of a surprise Christmas mail day from @CrattyPatty25 who I just also pulled off a trade with.

A few Star Wars cards I didn't have. Believe it or not, I haven't seen any of the new movies. I am still stuck on Episode 6. I just fear that I won't like them as my favorite movies are the originals, which turned out to be Episodes 4-6 but anyways that's where I stand with them.

And the final card, yes I know it's the Redskins, is Matthew Berry who I like listening to as a Fantasy Football expert.

Next up, a partial surprise mail day, he mentioned he had sent me a few things yesterday, from @MetallicarlUCT on Twitter who I met through the giveaway Tweet from @ngtcollectibles awhile back. Really nice guy.

He noticed I had started a Kerry Collins PC started up and passed some along.

 While also tossing in a Rodney Hampton card. I will have to double check on this one.

 Same goes for this set help. I am creeping like a newborn towards this set.

And then comes a Prism parallel /500. Beautiful card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It stills blows me away the amazing collectors I have met through the hobby especially via Twitter. If you aren't following either of these guys, strongly suggest it!

Player Profile #1:Gary Sheffield

Player Profile is a series that breaks down players I have pulled from my collection and designated as a player collection. These are mostly stars from the past and present and only include base cards and inserts. Hits and rookie cards are not counted. Some players I pulled because I was a fan of their game, others are obvious because of their play. Some players I actually look for cards of in packs while others get just placed in these boxes. This series will break down how many cards I have of the player, what my Top 5 favorite cards are of the player and why I pulled the player for a player collection.

This series will also cover all four sports I collect. 

Player By The Numbers For Gary Sheffield: 64 Total Different Cards. This number does not include NY Yankee cards of him as they are in my Yankees binder and not included in his player collection. My Yankee card numbers will be updated on here at a later time.

Gary Sheffield was an outstanding power hitter and all around outfielder from 1988 til 2009. He seemed to always be very "vocal" on the teams he played for which may explain why he played for so many. Eight to be exact. Most of which he was traded away.

I had a lot of admiration for him up until I found out he was apart of the PED team and was listed in the Mitchell Report. Once a player makes that list, I no longer care about adding more cards of them. If I happen to, I do and place them in their rightful spot. But, those are players I don't chase.

Anyways, I still have my Top 5 favorite cards of him despite my feelings so let's take a look.

#5 Gotta love the photographs that were featured on Stadium Club. Especially in the early 90's like this one. Gary seems to be eyeing what the pitcher is doing before getting ready for his turn.

#4 has Gary diving to catch a ball. Only Upper Deck could capture such a photograph that you can truly appreciate.

#3 is the batting stance. Another great photo captured by Upper Deck even in a low end brand like Collectors Choice.

#2 is just so, so shiny that I had to include it. Everyone knows my love of shiny cards.

#1 had to be an Upper Deck card just like four out of five were. Look at this photography. I was always a fan of the 1995 Upper Deck Sp set and it seems to be underrated in my opinion. The whole set included photographic moments like this and the design is sharp as well. We don't many of these simple but elegant sets anymore.

 

As I stated above, this is not all of my Sheffield cards as I need to dig out my Yankee ones and update the numbers on here with those. 

In closing, despite the allegations, Gary is apart of the 500 Home Run club which he accomplished in his final year with the Mets. I guess I can partially appreciate that despite my feeling it should be called *500 Home runs instead.

What's Gary been up to since he left baseball? Well he is currently working as a sports agent.

$1 Yard Sale Boxes Breakdown Part 3

I showed off a garbage bag containing some cards a couple weeks ago and said I would break down what was in there, well, here we go.

2 more days you will to see what was found.

Today, we continue on this time off a box of 1991 Leaf baseball

 

Inside the box, there were 4 big stacks of 1991 Leaf and as I expected, some of the good players were pulled leaving behind a few stragglers that I will use for my PC.

 

Once again, no Jr. But, just like with the last box, a few more star stragglers were found.

 

And out of all of these, there is simply something about the Oz here that stands out. I think it's the red of the Cardinals uni and the photo being different than the rest.

 

 

Overall, a better box than the first just because more of the bigger names found. But, still not as good as I was hoping and still no diamonds in the rough.

1997 Upper Deck UD3 Baseball Pack # 8

Pack #8 makes us 1/3rd of the way through the box. Still no insert finds, but I did nail another three cards toward the set putting me 24/60.

The three players I got today aren't too shabby either.

I always kinda liked Gary but once again, he had tie-in's with steroids among other on and off the field antics. But, he was a slugger and played what felt like for every team in MLB.

 

Greg Maddux was so dominant in the 90's. Playing baseball with my buddies in the backyard they would try to imitate him and it sort of intimidated me.
