Here we are with another break from my birthday packs from Oren!

Today, we take a break back to 2009 with a pack of Score football.

The Pope Has Arrived

When I window shop on eBay, I always run into the funnest (still not sure if this is a word) cards that weren't even a part of my shopping.

One of those cards popped up in the past couple of months when I was window shopping for presidential relic cards from the 2009 Topps American Heritage set. 

I immediately added the card to my watch list as I didn't have the funds, which is how it works for me with most cards I want.

Luckily for me this time, I fell into a situation of winning a contest on Twitter and was able to bring the card home. The contest was from @GloriousMattB who would purchase a card on eBay under $25 for the winner. I was chosen because the card was so unique.

This Pope Benedict XVI card fit my non-sport card collection, my Yankees collection and my unique relic collection all in one. 

The card showcases the Pope and features a swatch of authentic Yankee Stadium Wall.

 

Back of the card gives the usual gibberish. If Panini wrote this card back, it may have said this wall relic is not from any specific Pope event, not Pope warn, Pope touched, or even from Yankee Stadium.

These relic cards weren't terribly tough to land like some cards in the set as it fell 1:33 hobby and 1:135 retail packs. Some of those tougher to find relics are the ones I really want with pieces of the White House. That's pretty cool!

If you are curious about the Pope and Yankee Stadium connection, it's from when the Pope did his U.S. tour and held a massive mass in 2008 at Yankee Stadium. I guess you can say this is a moment in history on this card.

Thanks again to Matt for the card. It's a lot funner (yes blogger keep red underlining this word as a misspelled word, but I plan to keep using it) to actually own the card.

Kerry's Cardboard:2009 Topps Chrome Refractor

Last post in this series, I posted about a 2009 Bowman Chrome refractor I got for my Kerry Collins PC not to be confused with today's addition.

You see, Panini isn't the only company that likes to recycle their photos as Topps did as well. At least for these two Kerry Collins cards.

Here's the back of the 2009 Topps Chrome refractor with the infamous words refractor on the back.

These refractors fell 1:3 packs in 2009 Topps Chrome football boxes.

I grabbed this for $1, so not a bad deal!

Kerry's Cardboard:2009 Bowman Chrome Refractor

When I go digging for Kerry Collins cards I want to add, I always look for the shiny, the most interesting ones that pop out that I need right then and there.

With Kerry's big checklist, there is plenty of those to chase. It's then the point of whether they are affordable or not.If they are with my small budget, I grab them. If they are not, well, they will sit til I can someday grab them. However, it has costed me some good ones that way.

One of my main searches is for Kerry is those beautiful 90's inserts, then I jump to anything refractors.

This week, I couldn't find anything within the budget for the 90's insert range, so I found this 2009 Bowman Chrome refractor for $1. Perfect fit for my budget.

The card front looks real sharp with the dark grainy appeal especially with the touch of rainbow.

 

Card back. Not a lot of stats but a nice write up makes up for that. I must also point out the word

The odds of these refractors are 4 per box. With 18 packs per box, they roughly fell 1:4 to 1:5ish.

The same day I grabbed this Collins refractor, I also grabbed another Collins refractor that will wait til next week.

A Super Patch

Super Bowl 42 is a game that I will never forget. The undefeated Patriots who barely took down my team in Week 17 to go 16-0 was facing my team once again but this time on the leagues biggest stage. Of course all experts, including myself, was thinking they would run the table. But, what they didn't know was that this was a very special unit. A team that surprised three other teams in the playoffs to get there and an ending to a game like no other.

I remember sitting there late 4th quarter. 3rd down and Eli has a million Patriot players around him. I had my head towards the floor waiting for the inevitable sack. However, for some odd reason, it was taking a bit longer so I looked up to see Eli scrambling around and then just tossing the ball up in the air for grabs. "There it goes, another Eli interception" I yelled out loud with my father, mother and wife by my side.

Then something incredible happened, a NY Giant jumped up between two Patriot defenders and pinned the ball to his helmet using incredible strength as the Patriot player, Rodney Harrison, was trying to pry it away.

Then the rest was history, a few more short passes before Eli tosses it up to a wide open Plaxico Burress. I had tears of joy stream down my face and I bolted out my door in the middle of winter wearing only my pajamas and celebrated in the snow. It was amazing.

I will never forget that image of the helmet catch or the game.

So when I can pick up a piece of that game, I will do it. I hadn't ever heard of these Post Season patches from Topps but they look great even for a Manu patch. I even bid $8 to snag it. Not something I normally do either. But, I desperately wanted it and as it goes in the hobby, if you truly want something, sometimes you just gotta pay.

BASEically Awesome Part 8:2009 Upper Deck Football

If you are a collector, well, you simply know you can't use the words Upper Deck without associating the words photography. They have always been the best at capturing moments on the field. Whether it's baseball, football or on the court with basketball and even on the ice with hockey. Their photo's are the best.

One of my favorites comes from their last NFL product possibly ever. 2009 Upper Deck.

I have only chosen a few of the images from the set. But, I think it sets a great example of how simplicity of the design combined with the colorful pictures makes for cardboard bliss.

Mis-GRIFFED These

For the second time in a year during my sorting project, I stumbled upon a couple Ken Griffey Jr's I must had put in a wrong pile and got lost in my boxes by-brand for a few years.

Well, no more!

I have finally pulled them out and they will go to their rightful home in the Griffey binder.

Up first is one from The National. Design is okay. I like it cause it's the closest to The National I will ever get.

Up next, one from the Fan Fest in St. Louis. I like the design on this one with the arches showing and overall color appeal.

I hope to discover more Griffey's I forgot along my journey. I will have some updates soon on my overall sorting project as well.

An Exquisite Nicks

So we continue my trade recap with 90's Niche Football Card blog today with a really nice looking Hakeem Nicks.

This card has some many things right about it. Nice design, solid patch and an on-card autograph. Not to mention, it features a NY Giant.

Nicks had a solid career in NY after his 1st round drafting in 2009. Towards the end of his time with the Giants he couldn't get a TD and was no longer relevant. He bounced around teams for a bit after that and even made a NY Giants return. At this point I don't think he is with any teams or will get signed again. But, I will always remember his efforts and especially his play in the playoffs in 2012.

The Card Bin: What Did I Find This Time?

I really enjoyed doing this post over at The Card Bin blog and I wasn't just going to leave you all hanging with it. So without further ado, another post from The Card Bin, which is what I call this this tote right here:

 

I think most of us collectors have that one place we store all of our extra cards that are not PC related. This is where I stick mine. I also use this as a once-in-awhile dig through to bring back memories or for a just for fun experience. I will start posting cards from this bin to show you what's hiding in there. I honestly have no idea what is in there, I only know its autographs and memorabilia cards from the past 14 years. So this should be fun for both you and I!

Panini Card Of The Week: 2009 Score Inscriptions Andre Brown

Upper Deck Spx auto/jersey Hakeem Nicks eBay Mail Day

 

As a bargain hunter, I am always searching for deals and when I stumbled upon this Hakeem Nicks (literally stumbled upon it when looking up Eli Manning cards and have no clue why he was listed that way) and found this at a bargain. Being not only a Giants fan, but Nicks fan as well, I had to add it. 

It's my first rookie auto of his and now will fit perfectly into my collection and will be something I will hold onto whether the Giants decide to hold onto Nicks after the season or not. Which by the way, in my opinion, they should. He may be having a down season, but this guy has big hands and is a HUGE play maker.

This card is also another example of why Upper Deck needs an NFL license again. I really miss Spx being an NFL product. I am not a huge fan of NCAA football or the cards. Hopefully someday they will get a shot at one. I would be happy seeing three NFL licenses again.

A Stiller Of A Mail Day From Jammin JDcards

A few years ago I had busted a couple of boxes of Upper Deck A Piece Of History Baseball 2009 and became hooked on their A Piece Of Hollywood cards after pulling ones of Denzel Washington and Bruce Lee. However, I haven't added any to the set until now.

Awhile ago I saw that Jammin JDcards had pulled the Ben Stiller A Piece Of Hollywood from the movie, Along Came Polly, despite how bad that movie was, I really wanted the card. Not to mention, it's still Ben Stiller who has put out some hilarious movies such as Meet The Parents, Zoolander, Dodgeball, There's Something About Mary and Tower Heist among others. So I searched his STORE FRONT on Beckett Marketplace, found the card, and made it apart of the Sport Card Collector's family.

 

The design of the card is well done I like the fact that the back shows the piece it was cut from as seen here:

However, I do wished they had put the actor's face on the front of the card or a scene from the movie. That part is lacking and would have definitely improved the design of the card. But, overall not bad. This will go to the PC along with the other two I have. I truly enjoy finding unique pieces to add to my collection.

Fan Box Break: 2009 Artifacts A Piece of History Blaster Box

Jammin JDcards wanted to share this break with us and here it is for your viewing pleasure as well. I know I am totally digging the shirt piece of Ben Stiller used in "Along Came Polly". Though the movie wasn't that great, this piece of Hollywood Memorabilia is.

    

Here is what he thought of this break:

"2009 Artifacts A Piece of History – Also picked up these 2 blasters at K-Mart on sale. These are really nice cards. The design is nice and the card stock is thicker than normal so they have the feel of a high end card. There are also different colored parallels in the set which adds to the value of the boxes. I really enjoyed breaking these, especially with the guarantee of a memorabilia card in each blaster. The Ben Stiller “Along Came Polly” Piece of Hollywood card is really cool. Pulling stuff like that is surprising and adds to the entertainment/joy of the hobby. If you run across these blasters on sale somewhere I recommend buying them up – 1,2,17 just buy them all and send them to me if you don’t like them. lol"

Fan Box Break: 2009 Press Pass Stealth Racing

Jammin JDcards recently broke this and wanted us to share it for you guys to see...here is the break!

 

Here is what he thought of the break:

"2009 Press Pass Stealth – Picked this blaster up with a few other sale blasters at K-Mart. This break was entertaining as the cards are really colorful and bright. The base set is nice, there were 3 types of inserts – Mach 09, Confidential and Secret cards. The Confidential and Secret cards are interesting kind of an odd concept but cool. If you run across these blaster on sale somewhere I recommend grabbing 1 maybe 2 but no more than that. The redundancy is high."
